Neighborhood mourns victims of Bedford crash

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 31 Maret 2013 | 21.08

MAPLE HEIGHTS -- Sorrow hangs over Watson Road in Maple Heights Saturday night as a street that acted like a family is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Neighbor Lana Johnson remembered hearing the news, "When I first found out I couldn't believe it, it was so hard. I thought it was a dream, I'm like it can't be real. It's crazy, it hurts so bad...it can't be real. I wish they were still here and I want them to know I love them and they're going to be missed dearly."

Neighbors are still trying to piece together their emotions after hearing that 30-year-old mother Maria Thorpe and two of her daughters were killed in crash in Bedford Friday night.

Maria, who was pregnant with her fifth child, was driving her four daughters back home from her mother's house when police say a 48-year-old Warrensville Heights man driving a pickup truck ran a red light and crashed into them.

Maria and two of her daughters, 8-year-old Zariah Roberts and 5-year-old Zyanah Roberts, died in the crash. Her 12-year-old daughter was released from the hospital and is staying with her aunt and her 10-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition.

"They say she's moving her little fingers and she's okay, for now. Words can't even describe what they're going through right now and they're going to be missed," said heartbroken neighbor Alana Johnson.

Before the crash, Maria Thorpe was studying for her high school diploma and picking out baby names that begin with the letter Z.

Neighbors remember her as family, the lady that welcomed everyone to her pool parties and loved her children more than life itself.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital and then was taken into police custody after being treated. No charges have been filed, but they believe that alcohol may have been a factor.

Lake County: Painesville man killed in crash Saturday

CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 33-year-old Painesville man was killed in a crash on his motorcycle near the Lake County-Geauga County line Saturday.

Paul Widdowson was driving his motorcycle north on State Route 608, just north of the Geauga County line, when he crossed into the oncoming lane, hitting a car head-on.

Widdowson died at the scene, highway patrol said. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car, Erica Hebrock, 19, of Montville, and her passenger were not injured in the crash. Hebrock was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Speed is likely the leading factor in the crash, investigators said.

Cleveland: Horseshoe Casino loses power

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 28 Maret 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Horseshoe Casino lost power early Thursday morning.

A casino spokeswoman confirmed that the entire Higbee Building lost power overnight, but the casino is on backup generators Thursday morning.

Only slot machines on the second floor are affected.

At one point, only the first floor had backup power, but the second and third floors had generator power in place just before 6:30 a.m.

It is not clear exactly when the outage started. Casino workers have identified the problem and are working with Terminal Tower officials and FirstEnergy to fix the issue.

Medina parents want board, superintendent's resignations

MEDINA -- New Medina School Board president Dr. Karla Robinson takes over in a swirl of controversy.

On Tuesday, former board president Charley Freeman resigned, citing the dispute with parents over the superintendent's salary and perks as the cause.

Related article: Medina school board president resigns amid controversy

Superintendent Randy Stepp refused the raise and agreed to return the $83,000 bonus. He was still reimbursed $245,000 for student loans for further education.

At Wednesday's board meeting, angry district parents called for Stepp's resignation and the resignations of all board members involved in the Superintendent's new contract.

The president of the boosters says the mistrust is affecting donations.

"Before I vote yes, I want it in writing. My trust in all of you is gone," one parent said.

The president's resignation left an open spot on the board. Members are accepting applications for what will be the third appointee.

All three positions will be up for grabs after Dec. 31.

Medina hasn't passed a levy in five years but hopes to in the spring. Parents say the credibility gap will affect their vote.

Tips: Tax Day just 18 days away and counting down

Eighteen days to go until Tax Day and if you just haven't gotten around to those tax returns yet, WKYC money expert, Kevin Myeroff has some tips to get you through what can be a stressful time for some people.

Don't Panic
Even if you've been putting off filing your return, you can still get it in on time. Take that important first step: locate all the documents you need and organize your paperwork. Sometimes that can be the hardest part.

Check Your Facts
It's much more stressful to get your return done in a hurry, and errors may creep in if you're rushing. Take extra care to double check your figures and confirm that your Social Security number and other data on your return are correct.

Go Electronic
Instead of standing in long lines at the post office, taxpayers can take advantage of the opportunity to file their returns electronically. According to the IRS, nearly 100 million taxpayers used the e-file option last year. You can use the IRS Free File system or ask your CPA to prepare and file your return electronically for you.

Talk to an Expert
Speaking of your CPA, if you are running behind and don't usually use a tax preparer, this may be the year to put a CPA's expertise to work for you. Your CPA can quickly tell you what paperwork you need and make sense of your tax situation, taking this burden off your shoulders.

Get It Done
Keep in mind that if your return is late and you owe taxes, you could face interest and penalties that can really add up. If you don't file a return at all, the IRS can assess tax based on the information it has-which may not include exemptions or deductions you deserve-and begin a collection process. Even if it will take a lot of effort to get your return done on time, it's definitely worth it.

Consider an Extension
If you can't file your return on time, you may be eligible for a six-month extension of the due date, but keep in mind that you must still properly estimate the amount you will owe and pay that amount by the regular deadline. If you don't, you may be subject to interest and penalties. However, it may be possible to avoid the late payment penalty if you can show reasonable cause for missing the deadline. An automatic two month extension to file a return and pay taxes is available to taxpayers who are out of the country on the normal due date because they reside overseas or they are on military duty outside the U.S.

File Even if You Can't Pay
If you've been putting off filing because you don't have the money you owe, don't fail to send in your return. The IRS offers payment plans to eligible taxpayers who can't pay their taxes all at once. If you're not financially able to pay your tax debt immediately, you may qualify for an installment agreement that allows you to make payments over time. Your local CPA can help determine if you qualify for IRS payment plans and help you apply for one.

University Circle: Traffic lights out on Euclid Avenue

CLEVELAND -- Traffic is being rerouted in one of the busiest parts of Euclid Avenue because the street lights are out in the University Circle area of Cleveland early Wednesday morning.

The traffic light outage runs along Euclid Avenue from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to Mayfield Road.

Cleveland and University Circle police officers are directing traffic in the area.

Westbound drivers on Euclid will be diverted along Chester Avenue at the MLK intersection, but can cut back down to Euclid after about a block.

Similarly, eastbound Euclid drivers will have to detour one block south of the MLK intersection.

A cable fault was named as the cause Tuesday, a Cleveland Public Power official said.

There is no timetable on when the traffic lights will come back on.

Steubenville: Teens to be in court in Twitter threat case

STEUBENVILLE -- Two Ohio teens accused of making online threats against a rape victim are scheduled for their first court appearance.

The 15- and 16-year-old Jefferson County girls have been held in juvenile detention in Steubenville since their arrest last week.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says the girls posted threatening comments on Twitter on March 17, the day two high school football players were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl last summer. The case roiled the town of Steubenville and stirred reaction from activists online.

DeWine's office says the tweets threatened homicide and bodily harm against the rape victim.

The girls are expected to enter the juvenile court equivalent of a not guilty plea Wednesday.

The attorney for the 16-year-old declined to comment, and the attorney for the 15-year-old did not return a message.

Akron: Sentencing set in Craigslist murder case

AKRON -- A judge in Akron must make a life-or-death decision in sentencing a self-styled street preacher for the murders of three down-and-out men lured by Craigslist job offers.

Judge Lynne Callahan in Akron scheduled sentencing for Tuesday afternoon for 53-year-old Richard Beasley after last week's vote by the jury that convicted Beasley that he should be executed.

The judge has the option of reducing the sentence to life in prison.

Teenage co-defendant Brogan Rafferty was sentenced last year to life without parole. Because of his age, he wasn't eligible for the death penalty.

Three men were killed, and a fourth who was wounded testified at Beasley's trial.

Flash in East Coast sky has social media buzzing

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 23 Maret 2013 | 21.08

WASHINGTON - Social media sites are buzzing with reports of a flash of light streaking across the sky along the East Coast.

Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environmental Office said Friday night that the flash appears to be "a single meteor event." He said it "looks to be a fireball that moved roughly toward the southeast, going on visual reports."

He likened it to a boulder entering the Earth's atmosphere over the northeastern U.S.

He noted that the meteor was widely seen, with more than 350 reports on the website of the American Meteor Society alone.

Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, agreed that the sightings had all the hallmarks of a "fireball."

Pitts said this one caught more eyes because it happened on a Friday evening - and because Twitter has provided a way for people to share information on sightings.

Investigator: No penalties for poor attendance at Cleveland City Council

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 22 Maret 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- If Cleveland's 19 city council members skip legislative meetings, they face stiff fines. At least that's what it says on paper.

However, The Investigator Tom Meyer found no one gets penalized, regardless how poor their attendance is.

Councilman Ken Johnson took "top honors" for the worst city council attendance last year, attending 74 percent of the meetings.

"I don't really know. I really have no comment," Johnson said when questioned about his poor attendance.

After giving it more thought, he blamed his poor attendance on being busier than anyone else.

Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland has the fourth-worst attendance. Her response is because she has a challenging ward.

Downtown councilman Joe Cimperman tied Johnson for the worst attendance last year, but Cimperman and his colleagues say he had to spend considerable time on medical issues and on caring for a newborn.

City council members can be fined up to 2% of their salary for missing meetings, according to the city charter.

Council President Marty Sweeny said no one has ever been penalized in the 17 years he has been on council, including the past eight he has spend as president.

Several council members said they saw Councilman Eugene Miller at only one of the seven budget hearings last month, even though records show he attended all seven.

MORE ON MILLER STORY: Investigator: No show councilman too busy

Miller also missed 22% of the meetings last year.

After avoiding multiple attempts to contact him, Miller stated that if records show he attended all seven budget hearings, he must have.

"I'm not going to blow off a committee meeting just to go do something," Miller said when asked about his overall attendance.

Council records don't show how long a council member attended a meeting. There is no minimum requirement.

Council members may show up, leave a few minutes later and still go down in the books as being in attendance.

Ohio unemployment rate remains at 7 percent

COLUMBUS -- The latest monthly jobs data shows Ohio's unemployment rate continuing to stay below the national figure.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Friday the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February was 7 percent, unchanged from January.

Family services spokesman Ben Johnson says economists would hope to see the labor force growing more than it has at this point in a recovery, but adds the good news is the total number of unemployed is significantly down from a year ago.

The state's leaders have said Ohio's economy and its job market are getting stronger, though the process is slow.

Ohio's unemployment rate has remained about a percentage point below the U.S. rate, which was 7.7 percent in February.

Investigator: Traffic cam finalist investigated for bribery

CLEVELAND -- An Australian company that's at the center of a growing bribery scandal is a finalist to operate Cleveland's traffic camera program, Channel 3 News has learned.

Redflex Traffic System, Inc. is under federal investigation in Chicago and is being thrown to the curb by Mayor Rahm Emanuel after Redflex released the results of an internal investigation.

Redflex admitted in February that an employee and a consultant lavished the manager running Chicago's traffic camera program with 17 all-expenses paid vacations, computers, golf, and fine dining, at a cost of $20,000.

The company also discovered that the consultant kicked back some of his $2 million fee to the program manager.

Finally, Redflex admitted in March that it is investigating similar allegations in two other cities.

"It raises red flags," said Cleveland Councilman Mike Polensek. "If they've been involved in bribing public officials or public administrators, I don't believe they should even be in the running for a contract."

Channel 3 found that Redflex employee Aaron Rosenberg has been directly involved with the company's bid here in Cleveland -- he's the same Aaron Rosenberg at the center of the Chicago scandal.

"The guy knew his stuff," said Project Manager Larry Jones, who is overseeing the contract bidding process in Cleveland.

Jones said the city is currently looking at the finalist's camera systems and services, but it would eventually look at the company culture of the three finalists.

"How they conduct themselves, how they govern themselves, will somehow reflect what the City of Cleveland stands for," said Jones.

Redflex says it has changed top leaders as a result of its investigation and instituted ethics-related training. It also said the problems did not affect the quality of its products and services.

Channel 3 also found the other two contenders for Cleveland's camera program contract have problems of their own.

Xerox, which currently runs Cleveland's traffic camera program, is in trouble in Baltimore after the local newspaper there found city and company officials knew a traffic camera was inaccurate but failed to shut it down.

Meanwhile, the third finalist, Automated Traffic Solutions, recently settled 16 class-action lawsuits in New Jersey over the shortening of yellow-light times to catch more drivers.

"If we're going to have red light cameras," said Polensek, "the company behind them has to be a stand up company without any cloud over their head."

Police: Nurse indicted for fondling woman in labor

CLEVELAND -- Following an investigation of the Cleveland Police Sex Crimes Unit that began back in June, a student registered nurse anesthetist has been indicted for two felony counts of gross sexual imposition.

James Lewis, 28, will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. April 2.

Lewis is accused of putting his hand on the woman's breast and then taking her hand and putting her hand on his genitals as the woman patient was being prepped for giving birth.

The patient then alerted others in the room and Lewis was escorted from the room.

When the investigation began in June, hospital officials ordered Lewis to stay off hospital property until the investigation was complete.

Fairview Hospital is operated by the Cleveland Clinic and it fully cooperated in the investigation.

Jury must weigh death sentence in Craigslist murders

AKRON --  Jurors who convicted a self-styled preacher for killing three men lured with Craigslist job offers must return to consider his sentence.

The jury in Akron was scheduled to return Wednesday in the case against 53-year-old Richard Beasley. The jury must decide whether to recommend the death penalty.

He was convicted last week of killing three men and wounding a fourth, all lured with offers of farmhand jobs in southeast Ohio. The survivor was wounded, fled into the woods and tipped off police.

Beasley's co-defendant, then 16 years old, was too young to face the death penalty. Brogan Rafferty was sentenced to life without chance of parole on his conviction last year.

Beasley testified that the survivor pulled a gun on him in retaliation for being a police informant.

20-car pile up at Snow & Engle Roads

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 18 Maret 2013 | 22.26

NORTHEAST OHIO -- A wintry mix of weather this morning created treacherous conditions across Northeast Ohio, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The slick weather kept police, EMS and fire departments busy.

In Brook Park police handled a 20-car pile-up at Snow and Engle roads. The bridge had become extremely slick due to the icy precipitation. There were reports of two people taken from the scene with minor injuries.

Other trouble spots included the Fulton Bridge over the Zoo that had to be closed for a bit to allow road crews to get in there to salt the pavement.

ODOT says it has 42 trucks out in Cuyahoga County salting and treating roads.

The area was under a Winter Weather Advisory until 11 a.m. Conditions are expected to improve as the precipitation changes over to all rain.

Steubenville: Manager says city backs inquiry

COLUMBUS -- The top official in an eastern Ohio city facing a broad criminal investigation following a girl's rape says the community will support the inquiry.

Steubenville city manager Cathy Davison says the community wants to see justice done and will stand behind a grand jury announced by the Ohio attorney general, whose targets include numerous high school football coaches.

Davison tells The Associated Press the community's heritage and moral fiber are more important than the football program, which has won multiple state championships and is big source of pride in Steubenville.

A judge on Sunday pronounced two high school football players guilty of raping the 16-year-old girl and sentenced them to a minimum of one year in juvenile prison.

Davison, in her first comments since the verdict, says the decision has helped the community.

Steubenville rape case verdict in judge's hands

STEUBENVILLE -- This was a massive case to plow through for Jefferson County Juvenile Court, over 30 witnesses, hundreds of pieces of evidence and marathon court sessions, the longest of which 13 and a half hours.

The ultimate decision will change the future for three young people whose one night of drinking forever ruined reputations , friendships, and brought shame to this small but proud Ohio River community.

The very photos and YouTube videos circulated for amusement could be the difference in this most serious rape case.

"When she was falling down, when she was picked up, and carried who are the two people who are always there? Mal'ik Richmond and Trent Mays," Prosecutor Brian Decker said.

Defendants Ma'lik Richmond and Trent Mays, two star players on Steubenville's Big Red football team are on trial for rape.

If convicted, they could spend up to five years in juvenile detention and be labeled sexual predators deep into their adult years.

"I find it hard to believe that no one would do anything or say anything to even send a text message, " defense attorney Adam Nemann said.

In closing, Mays' attorney told Judge Thomas Lipps that, for all the texting and tweeting about the 16-year-old alleged victim, no one helped because no one felt she was in trouble.

"I woke up with no clothes on. I didn't know what happened at all," the alleged victim said.

By all accounts, the girl was was the most intoxicated at the party. The prosecution says she was twice molested, that it happened in teammate Mark Cole's car and basement, that testimony and photos indicate at the time she was passed out.

"It was really scary. I was embarrassed and scared. I didn't know what to think. I couldn't remember," the girl testified.

The defense maintains this was consensual. Before the photos, the two were seen together at the party.

"They were cuddling, they were holding hands, they were hugging and kissing, holding hands," Nemann said.

Her two former friends testified the girl is not to be trusted.

"I'm not saying it. I'm not blaming or smearing this witness. Her friends told this court she has a reputation for telling lies," defense attorney Walter Madisan said.

The past is not on trial here. Instead, the future of three teenagers who are discovering some hard lessons about growing up.

"This case is about a little girl that was taken advantage of, toyed with and humiliated, and it's time that the people that did that to her are held responsible," Prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter said.

Judge Lipps wanted time to go over the evidence, testimony and his own notes before rendering a verdict.

That decision will come Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Mansfield teacher donating kidney to save student's life

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 16 Maret 2013 | 21.08

MANSFIELD -- Teachers tend to have an impact on their student's lives.

But in Mansfield, one teacher's decision has the power to save one of her kids. And it's a life lesson that's getting national attention.

Nicole Miller loves painting, running around with her dog, and says she likes going to the doctor. For this squirmy little first grader, regular doctors visits are a part of life.

Nicole has a genetic disorder and was born with only one kidney, and as she grew, the kidney she had wouldn't grow with her.

"We basically emailed everybody in the world that we knew and just sent out the request, hey we need a kidney and anyone willing to give us one?," says Letitia Miller, Nicole's mom.

Over a dozen people stepped up, but no one was a tissue match.

"And then my niece was tested and she was a match, she went through the whole process, about a 6 month process and she was denied," says Miller.

In kindergarten, Nicole's condition worsened. But her teacher, Wendy Killian, couldn't tell by the little girl's demeanor.

"I always called her my sunshine girl, because she would just walk in the room every morning with such a glow and a smile and just such a joy to be in school," says Killian.

Killian was new to Mansfield Christian Academy, and was teaching kindergarten waiting for the 4th grade spot to open up.

"I accepted the job offer just as a last resort thinking, Ok Lord, you have me here for a reason, if there's one child who I need to touch, then show me which one and he sure did," says Killian.

The reason was Nicole.

"One February afternoon a year ago, I was talking with Letisia and I asked her, so if they could find a perfect donor, what is the criteria for the perfect donor, and so she went through the whole list and as she was speaking, I was thinking, ok that's me, that's me that's me."

Killian didn't even think twice about testing her tissue type. Because when her youngest son was born he was critically ill, but his life was saved by a blood platelet transfusion.

"What saved his life, what made him turn the corner was that he had a blood platelet transfusion from a donor," says Killian, "And I just sat there and prayed, Lord, if there's ever a time when I can give back to another mommy sitting in this seat, please use me."

After all the blood tests, Wendy Killian was a match.

"I was jumping up and down with joy, when she told me that she was a match, we were just ecstatic," says Miller.

By this summer, Nicole will have a new kidney.

"I know that the Lord's hands, his fingerprints, are all over this," says Killian.

The surgery is scheduled for the end of April at University Hospital in Cleveland.

Second Carnival ship in a day having trouble

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 15 Maret 2013 | 21.08

Yet another Carnival Cruise ship is experiencing a technical issue.

Carnival says the 2,124-passenger Carnival Legend today is having a problem with one of its Azipod propulsion units that is affecting the vessel's sailing speed.

The Carnival Legend's "hotel" operations including lighting, air conditioning and toilets are working fine, but the vessel will miss its scheduled call today in Grand Cayman due to a reduced speed, the company says in a statement issued early Friday

The incident comes just a day after technical problems grounded the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream in Philipsburg, St. Maarten and a little more than a month after an engine room fire left the 2,758-passenger Carnival Triumph dead in the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Both ships are now out of service for repairs.

The Carnival Legend is in the midst of a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise out of Tampa that began on Sunday and had been scheduled to include calls in Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico as well as Grand Cayman. With its speed reduced, the ship is now heading directly home to Tampa in lieu of the scheduled Grand Cayman stop, the line says. It's expected to arrive in Tampa on Sunday as scheduled.

Carnival says passengers on the Carnival Legend will receive a $100 per person credit as compensation for the missed Grand Cayman call as well as a refund of any pre-purchased shore excursions. Passengers also will receive 50% off a future Carnival cruise.

Passengers on the Carnival Dream are being flown home from St. Maarten today and Saturday, and the line has canceled the next sailing of the vessel scheduled to begin on Saturday. Carnival on Thursday said a backup generator on the Carnival Dream malfunctioned Wednesday during a routine test while the ship was in port and needs to be repaired.

Ohio Sen. Portman now supports gay marriage

CINCINNATI -- Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio says he now supports gay marriage because one of his sons is gay.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that during an interview Thursday in Washington, Portman said his evolution on the subject of gay marriage began in 2011 when his son, Will, then a freshman at Yale University, told his parents he was gay.

Portman says his new views reflect "a change of heart from the position of a father" and that he first talked to his pastor and others, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is a lesbian.

As a member of the House in 1996, Portman voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

On Twitter, Cleveland Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman (@joecimperman) tweeted his approval of Portman's stance.

Pope Francis prays at Rome basilica in 1st outing

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 14 Maret 2013 | 21.08

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis opened his first morning as pontiff by praying Thursday at Rome's main basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a day after cardinals elected him the first pope from the Americas in a bid to revive a Catholic Church in crisis and give it a preacher with a humble touch.

The former archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, entered the St. Mary Major basilica through a side entrance just after 8 a.m. (0700 GMT) and left about 30 minutes later. He had told a crowd of some 100,000 people packed in rain-soaked St. Peter's Square just after his election that he intended to pray to the Madonna "that she may watch over all of Rome."

He told cardinals he would also call on retired Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday, though the Vatican said it had no information about a visit. The main item on his agenda was an inaugural afternoon Mass in the Sistine Chapel, where cardinals on Wednesday elected him leader of the 1.2 billion-strong church in an unusually quick conclave.

Francis, the first Jesuit pope and first non-European since the Middle Ages, decided to call himself Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, the humble friar who dedicated his life to helping the poor.

The new pope immediately charmed the crowd in St. Peter's that roared when his name was announced.

Waving shyly, he said the cardinals' job was to find a bishop of Rome. "It seems as if my brother cardinals went to find him from the end of the earth, but here we are. Thank you for the welcome."

The 76-year-old Bergoglio, said to have finished second when Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005, was chosen on just the fifth ballot to replace the first pontiff to resign in 600 years. In the past century, only Benedict, John Paul I in 1978 and Pius XII in 1939 were elected faster.

Immediately after his election, Francis spoke by phone with Benedict, who has been living at the papal retreat in Castel Gandolfo. A visit to him would be significant because Benedict's resignation has raised concerns about potential power conflicts emerging from the peculiar situation of having a reigning pope and a retired one.

Benedict's longtime aide, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, accompanied Francis to the visit at St. Mary Major, the ANSA news agency reported. In addition to being Benedict's secretary, Gaenswein is also the prefect of the papal household and will be arranging the new pope's schedule.

Like many Latin American Catholics, Francis has a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary, and his visit to the basilica was a reflection of that. He prayed before a Byzantine icon of Mary and the infant Jesus, the Protectress of the Roman People.

"He had a great devotion to this icon of Mary and every time he comes from Argentina he visits this basilica," said one of the priests at the basilica, the Rev. Elio Montenero. "We were surprised today because did not announce his visit."

Francis' election elated Latin America, home to 40 percent of the world's Catholics which has nevertheless long been underrepresented in the church leadership. On Wednesday, drivers honked their horns in the streets of Buenos Aires and television announcers screamed with elation at the news.

"It's a huge gift for all of Latin America. We waited 20 centuries. It was worth the wait," said Jose Antonio Cruz, a Franciscan friar at the St. Francis of Assisi church in the colonial Old San Juan district in Puerto Rico. "Everyone from Canada down to Patagonia is going to feel blessed."

The new pontiff brings a common touch. The son of middle-class Italian immigrants, he denied himself the luxuries that previous cardinals in Buenos Aires enjoyed. He lived in a simple apartment, often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited slums that ring Argentina's capital.

"If he brings that same desire for a simple lifestyle to the papal court, I think they are all going to be in shock," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, author of "Inside the Vatican," a must-read book on the Vatican bureaucracy. "This may not be a man who wants to wear silk and furs."

Francis considers social outreach, rather than doctrinal battles, to be the essential business of the church.

"As a champion of the poor and the most vulnerable among us, he carries forth the message of love and compassion that has inspired the world for more than 2,000 years - that in each other, we see the face of God," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement.

As the 266th pope, Francis inherits a Catholic church in turmoil, beset by the clerical sex abuse scandal, internal divisions and dwindling numbers in parts of the world where Christianity had been strong for centuries.

While Latin America is still very Catholic, it has faced competition from aggressive evangelical churches that have chipped away at strongholds like Brazil, where the number of Catholics has dropped from 74 percent of the population in 2000 to 65 percent today. Like Europe, secularism has also taken hold: more and more people simply no longer identify themselves with any organized religion.

Francis is sure to bring the church closer to the poverty-wracked region, while also introducing the world to a very different type of pope, whose first words were a simple, "Brothers and sisters, good evening."

He asked for prayers for himself, and for Benedict, whose stunning resignation paved the way for his election.

"I want you to bless me," Francis said in his first appearance from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, asking the faithful to bow their heads in silent prayer.

Free brand-name prescription glasses

CLEVELAND -- There are some fantastic legit freebies available online. The key is making the most of the opportunities and steering clear of the scams.

Today one of my favorite offers has returned from one of my favorite online glasses/contact lens sellers.

Available to new customers (and if you took advantage of last year's promotion, maybe someone else in your household needs glasses), use coupon code OFFERSGFREE and you'll score a pair of glasses for free.

NO, THIS IS NOT A SCAM!

Coastal.com (owned by Coastal Prescription) hopes that offering free glasses for a limited time to new customers will help to earn your business. Not every pair is free nor is every prescription but at the worst you get free frames and just pay a shipping/handling fee.

The insurance and shipping/handling fee, which runs about $12 to $14 per order. It's absolutely worth it considering most frames are at least $50 and I love Coastal's customer service.

Also, despite what the original coupon claims, you only get the glasses free, shipping is not free. Only use coupon code OFFERSGFREE as the free shipping code will cancel this out.

CLICK HERE for your free pair of glasses.

Again, make sure you enter the coupon code at checkout.

Conclave's Day 1: Don't expect white smoke

ROME -- Although the conclave to select the next pope begins today, no one is expecting drama on the first day.

For starters, there's only one voting session, set for around 5 p.m. local time. That's compared to four ballots per day come Wednesday.

"You can expect black smoke," said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi, drawing his confidence from a long history of day-one duds. "The first conclave vote rarely has a positive result."

But what to the outside world may look like a wasted day is actually to the 115 voting cardinals a critical steppingstone toward selecting a leader for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

"This first day is important because it establishes the spiritual aspects of the conclave," says Matthew Bunson, a religious scholar and author of We Have a Pope! Benedict XVI. "That happens through the procession into the Sistine Chapel and the constant prayers asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit."

But perhaps more significantly, it clues cardinals in to who's trending.

"They learn from that first vote who the leading contenders are and what level of backing they have," says Bunson, noting that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's strong support at the outset of 2005's conclave led to him becoming Pope Benedict in just four ballots.

"If someone gets lots of votes on the first ballot, the momentum could take hold and this could be over quickly," says Thomas Reese, analyst for the National Catholic Reporter, adding that the winner will need two-thirds -- or 77 -- of the 115 votes. "On the other hand, if someone gets to 60 fast, but then stalls, that could require a lot of negotiations to see who's going to compromise on their candidate."

Reese says what partly paved the way for John Paul II's revolutionary election as a Polish pope was that votes were split between the two leading Italian cardinals, resulting in a winning third path. Although presently Milanese Cardinal Angelo Scola is often mentioned as among the leading "papabili," U.S. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York also received his share of press of late.

But whenever the new pope is elected, spokesman Lombardi warned that it may take a while before the throngs of faithful and tourists waiting in St. Peter's Square see the new pontiff. That's because the next man to sit on the throne of St. Peter plans to stop in the Pauline Chapel to pray before alighting on the balcony to face the masses.

"It could take longer than last time," when it was almost an hour before Pope Benedict appeared, Lombardi said. "Especially if the new pope immerses himself in prayer."

Monday morning workers readied that famous balcony for its big moment, putting up massive red velvet curtains with a crane while bystanders snapped photos.

Meanwhile, deep inside the labyrinthine recesses of the powerful but troubled city-state, the nearly 100 people who will assist in the conclave "from priests to drivers" swore an oath of secrecy.

That vow echoes the elaborate technological measures being taken to prevent digital information from entering or leaving the Sistine Chapel, perhaps the world's most historic and valuable polling station.
Those include the installation of cell jamming devices and even raising the floor of the 15th-century building.

Tuesday, the cardinals will enter the chapel and take their own oaths by placing their hands on a book containing selections from the gospels, and then with the traditional cry "Extra Omnes" "Everyone out" the conclave will officially begin.

The cardinals are expected to vote in prayerful silence. Although many use social media to connect with the faithful, everything about this historic exercise is old school. Each will receive a card with the heading "Eligo In Summum Pontifem," meaning simply "I Elect as Pope." Beneath, they hand-write their choice.

What politicking does occur between balloting sessions will be contained to walks, dinners and late-night chats at the Casa Santa Marta, a five-story building inside the Vatican's imposing walls that houses all of the red-robed electorate. But when there finally is a majority vote, the world will know thanks to smoke signals.

Out of the thinnest of capped chimneys, mounted specifically for the conclave, black or white smoke will pour. Two stoves actually were installed in the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. One is for burning the ballots "previously, wet straw was added to create a blacker smoke, but the method was found lacking " and the other is for burning a special mix of chemicals that should definitively create the right color.

One can only hope. In 2005, Benedict's winning ballot took far longer to convey than anticipated. To begin with, the white smoke looked gray. And the Vatican bells that traditionally ring in the election of a new pope stayed silent because the bell-ringer was waiting for clearance from a high-ranking official. Let the drama begin.

I-90 still closed as crews remove damaged bridge

CLEVELAND -- Interstate 90 remains closed in both directions as crews scramble to get a damaged highway bridge taken down after a dump truck slammed into it.

The accident happened on I-90 westbound between E. 156th  Street and E. 185th Street around 6:45 a.m Saturday.

Police say the truck from Big Blue Trucking out of Warren, Ohio, was traveling with a raised trailer when it hit the bridge. After hitting the bridge the truck then rolled over.

Police have closed the highway in both directions because the bridge is severely damaged.

Unsafe conditions force the Ohio Department of Transportation to bring in another crane.  Crews are rushing to dismantle the bridge but the delay in bringing the second crane may push back the reopening of Interstate 90 one more day.

"ODOT will not reopen I-90 until it is 100% safe for the traveling public to drive though this area." said Amanda Lee.

Vehicles traveling eastbound on I-90 will exit on E.152nd Street and head south to St. Clair Avenue. Then take St. Clair Avenue east to Babbitt Road. Head north on Babbitt Rd to Lakeland Boulevard. Head east on Lakeland to get back onto I-90 eastbound.

Vehicles traveling westbound are asked to exit at E. 260th Street to Babbit Road, north to St. Clair Avenue and onto E. 152nd to access I-90.

Jennifer Ciaccia with the Cleveland Police Department tells Channel 3 the truck driver Michael Edwards, 35, will be cited for all appropriate traffic violations.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will also be apart of the investigation.  Troopers will inspect the truck for violations.

SOLON -- A teenager from Solon High School is an inspiration to many.

Justin Bachman is dealing with Tourette's but he's turned his life challenge into a positive one.

A disorder that causes uncontrollable movements and involuntary vocal sounds.

"He has had to grow up so fast because he had to learn to advocate for himself very early on," said Justin's mother Lisa Bachman.

Justin's journey started in In 7th grade when he was disqualified from a cross country meet.

"I was doing my thing I was ticking and making a lot of noise," says Justin.

The referees of the race thought Justin was being rude with his outbursts, not understanding that he had a special need.

Ron Bachman, Justin's father said, "A lot of the times we would like to find those two officials and say thank you for being as intolerant as they were because they didn't realize the firestorm that they started from this whole thing."

At 13-years-old sitting at the kitchen table Justin decided that he wanted to advocate for people of difference and came up with the Tolerance fair.

"That really pushed me into making it my life's mission to have other people not experience the intolerance that I did," says Justin.

The first Tolerance Fair was held at the Solon Recreation Center and people flocked to it.

"Going to a place like the Tolerance Fair introduces people to resources and groups where they can meet like minded individuals," Lisa added.

Justin is a making a difference and continues to do it though speeches at schools and even on Capitol Hill.

"Being different is being awesome. That every one of us is unique in our own special being and a lot of people don't embrace the differences in themselves," said Justin.

The Tolerance Festival is is free and will be Sunday, March 10th from 2pm to 4pm at the I-X Center.

Free world-class credit card, no questions asked

CLEVELAND -- I have honestly never seen a prepaid credit card that looks like this. With so many of you just using your debit card or settling for lame credit cards (and companies) due to insufficient credit, this could be what you're looking for.

"Serve" is a new product from American Express that gets you almost everything a standard Amex card offers, but for free.

If you shop online frequently, have concerns about identity theft, or just want the perfect card to use abroad or on vacation, I highly recommend Serve.

I've always thought prepaid cards are a good tool in teaching teens and young adults (college age) how to be responsible with their money and stick to a budget. That's a Ways 2 Save for life.

For $0.00 and absolutely no service fees you get:

• A safe easy way to pay in stores, online and on your mobile phone

• No credit checks

• No monthly fees

• No annual fees

• Award-winning American Express customer service

• 24/7 customer support

• Global Assist

• Roadside assistance access

• Deal alerts

• Easily Reloadable (and can be linked to your bank account if you choose)

• Easily send and receive money by text

And yes, it's free.

Another nice thing is if you have trouble budgeting or sometimes find yourselves in over your head (as we all do), a reloadable card can't get you into the same problems a standard credit card can.

If you're just curious, I say give it a shot since it's free, you can cancel at any time and this is another great financial tool at your disposal. CLICK HERE

Cleveland: Firemen rescue mom and three kids from fire

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 07 Maret 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- Firefighters rescued a mother and her three young children Thursday morning from a burning apartment building.

Cleveland fire units were called to the apartment building at 4257 Rocky River Drive around 8:00 a.m.

They responded to reports of smoke billowing out of the second story.

When firefighters arrived, they pounded on apartment doors to get people out.

A young mother was asleep in a unit with her three children, ages two, five and a four month old.

Firemen pulled the four to safety.

The mom said there was no way she could have gotten out of the building without the firemen rescuing her.

She said she was thankful to be alive.

Fire crews are still at the apartment building investigating.

How to get the lowest car rental rate

CLEVELAND -- I hate car rental fees.

If the price of flying wasn't expensive enough, you can easily spend more than that cost of your flight on a car rental of five days or more.

To make matters worse, all the coupons the airlines send you for Hertz and Avis are actually sometimes the most expensive rates out there. Not cool.

To make matters more confusing, car rental companies advertise all these incredible rates that no one ever seems to be able to lock in with their travel dates or destination.

In my continued search to bring you the best sites and deals every day, today I present one simple way to lock in the lowest price.

I wish that, like on most of the deals I find, I could find you a coupon code for 80% off. That just doesn't exist with car rentals, but I do have three things to pass along.

Carentals.com paired with an Offers.com coupon code will find you the lowest price with rates starting at $8.95, searching the seven least expensive car rental vendors.
