Indians fall to Tigers 7-2 in rain-shortened game

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 31 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

Victor Martinez had a pair of doubles and sparked a four-run rally in the third inning Friday night as the Detroit Tigers continued their dominance of the Cleveland Indians with a 7-2 victory in a game shortened to seven innings due to rain.

Martinez got off to a slow start this year after sitting out the entire 2012 season after having surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Tigers have won seven consecutive games against the Indians and are 14-3 against them this season.

Cleveland Browns 2013 Season Preview

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 29 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

During his introductory press conference back in January as new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Rob Chudzinski said he wanted his club to have an attacking style on both sides of the ball.

While he might not yet have the right roster to put the rest of the AFC North on notice, the Browns certainly won't lack the energy to carry out his desired scheme.

The Cleveland franchise has made the postseason just once since its return to the NFL in 2000 and Chudzinski becomes the team's third different head coach in five seasons. He takes over an offense stacked with young talent, so adding to the defense was priority No. 1 for the new coach and CEO Joe Banner.

The front office certainly didn't spend its offseason idle, quickly signing linebackers Paul Kruger and Quentin Groves in the early days of free agency in addition to defensive lineman Desmond Bryant.

The draft also saw Cleveland add to its defensive unit as the club made a character selection in Barkevious Mingo with the sixth overall pick before finally addressing its secondary with cornerback Leon McFadden in the third round.

Those additions should improve the unit and balance out the Browns' overall roster.

"I don't think there is a particular side of the ball that is going to be an identity of this team," said Chudzinski. "I think the identity that we want is a bunch of guys that come out that are hungry and anxious to play and are passionate about playing, who are going to play tough, physical football and want to win for the Cleveland Browns. Where that ultimately stands is that teams that win are teams that have balance on all sides of the ball, offense, defense and special teams."

The likes of Kruger and Mingo are expected to be contributors to the new 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Ray Horton, but the rookie Mingo was hospitalized with a bruised lung suffered during a preseason game and his return date is unknown.

On the offensive side of things, Chudzinski and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner will blend a few new faces with the core young core of running back Trent Richardson and receivers Greg Little and Josh Gordon. Chudzinski also made the expected choice of sticking with 29-year-old quarterback Brandon Weeden, who enters his second year in the NFL.

Weeden held off Jason Campbell for the starting job and picked up some new targets in wideout Davone Bess and tight ends Gary Barnidge and Kellen Davis.

"Well that's part of this process in training camp," Chudzinski said of the unknown of his offense. "We want to be able to look at them and for them to give a chance to show what they can do, for us to assess them and to be able to see what their strengths are, to be able to adjust and put in the best things to succeed."

2012 RECORD: 5-11 (4th, AFC North)

LAST PLAYOFF APPEARANCE: 2002, lost to Pittsburgh Steelers in wild card round

HEAD COACH (RECORD): Rob Chudzinski (first season)

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Norv Turner (first season with Browns)

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Ray Horton (first season with Browns)

KEY ADDITIONS: QB Jason Campbell (from Bears), QB Brain Hoyer (from Cardinals), RB Dion Lewis (from Eagles), WR Davone Bess (from Dolphins), WR David Nelson (from Bills), TE Gary Barnidge (from Panthers), TE Kellen Davis (from Bears), OT Rashad Butler (from Texans), DT Desmond Bryant (from Raiders), LB Paul Kruger (from Ravens), LB Quentin Groves (from Cardinals), LB Barkevious Mingo (1st round, LSU), LB Justin Cole (from Rams), CB Leon McFadden (3rd round, San Diego State), CB Christopher Owns (from Falcons), P Spence Lanning (from free agency), K Shayne Graham (from Texans)

KEY DEPARTURES: QB Josh Johnson (to Bengals), QB Colt McCoy (to 49ers), WR Joshua Cribbs (to Raiders), WR Mohamed Massaquoi (to Jaguars), TE Alex Smith (to Bengals), TE Benjamin Watson (to Saints), DE Juqua Parker (free agent), DE Frostee Rucker (released), LB Scott Fujita (retired), LB Kaluka Maiava (to Raiders), LB Chris Gocong (released), LB Emmanuel Acho (to Eagles), CB Sheldon Brown (free agent), S Usama Young (to Raiders), S Ray Ventrone (to 49ers), P Reggie Hodges (free agent), K Phil Dawson (to 49ers)

QB: Weeden wasn't the ideal candidate to take over an NFL franchise given that he didn't reach the draft until his late 20s because of a professional baseball career, but the Browns still took him 22nd overall in 2012.

Weeden won the starting competition and played in 15 games before missing the finale due to a right shoulder injury. Along the way, he set franchise rookie records with five wins and 3,385 passing yards, but was picked off 17 times to 14 touchdown passes.

The Browns signed Campbell, a former first-round pick, to push Weeden and he responded by impressing the new coaching staff and grasping the new system.

"He has been able to manage the games and go out and make good decisions, lead his teammates and obviously, succeed," Chudzinski said of Weeden winning the starting job. "He has made the personal-technique improvements that he has needed to make to improve himself. I just see him on a constant basis. There are going to be ups and downs along the way, but overall, the general trend has been upward."

Campbell is an experienced backup, having made 71 starts in 77 career appearances, and will slot ahead of Brian Hoyer.

GRADE: C+

RB: Weeden's selection last year came 19 picks after the Browns had already moved up a spot to grab Richardson out of Alabama.

Richardson showed his toughness right out of the gate, starting in 15 games despite missing most of training camp and the preseason while recovering from knee surgery. He also battled a rib injury throughout the campaign, but still set a number of franchise rookie records.

Formerly called "ordinary" by Browns legend Jim Brown, Richardson's 950 rushing yards bested Brown's previous rookie mark of 942, and the former's 11 touchdowns broke the Hall-of-Famer's mark of nine.

Richardson was also a threat in the receiving game, finishing second on the club with 51 receptions, and one has to wonder what he will have in store if he stays healthy.

"No surgeries before the season. I don't plan on having one this year," the 23-year-old said. "It's on the uprise right now. I'm taking one step at a time, like I said earlier. I just love it right now; there is nothing like football shape and it's a long way to go. I still have to work hard so I can play all four quarters and I want to be in the best shape I can be when it comes September."

The Browns took a hit at depth when both Dion Lewis (broken left fibula) and Montario Hardesty (knee surgery) were placed on injured reserve. Chris Ogbonnaya will take over at fullback as Owen Marecic was cut during the preseason. He is a solid blocker and can also play tailback. Brandon Jackson is slated to back up Richardson.

GRADE: B+

WR: Cleveland's receivers are young, but have talent and a variety of tools.

Gordon led the Browns with 805 receiving yards and five touchdowns, representing Weedon's best deep threat. He finished third among rookies in receiving yards and hauled in scoring passes of 71 and 62 yards from Weeden.

However, the 22-year-old will miss the first two games of the regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Gordon said he took medicine that contained codeine when diagnosed with a strep throat in February.

Little, meanwhile, led the Browns 53 catches and added four touchdown grabs in his second NFL season and Chudzinski noted that Little has made big strides this spring.

Travis Benjamin can also stretch the field and should slip into Gordon's role early on, while the Browns added an experienced receiver to the mix by acquiring Bess. The 27-year-old hasn't shown a knack for finding the end zone, but is a possession compliment to Gordon and Little.

Cleveland also took a chance on the 6-foot-5 David Nelson, who managed eight TD receptions in his first two NFL seasons with Buffalo before being limited to one game last year due to a torn ligament in his right knee.

GRADE: C+

TE: Tight end was not a go-to position for Weeden at Oklahoma State, but in his first season with the Browns he connected with Benjamin Watson 49 times for 501 yards and three touchdowns.

Cleveland overhauled the position this offseason, parting ways with Watson and Alex Smith while signing Barnidge and Davis. Those two should slot in behind third-year USC product Jordan Cameron, who figures to get a bigger role this year after making 20 catches in 14 games last year.

Cameron was very adapt at being the safety net, with 12 of his receptions going for first downs.

Barnidge, meanwhile, is familiar with Chudzinski, having played under Cleveland's new head coach when the latter served as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers the past two seasons.

"He has worked hard to develop as both a blocker and a receiver," Chudzinski said of Barnidge. "His familiarity with our offense will give him the opportunity to make a smooth transition with us."

Davis started 30 games for the Chicago Bears the past two seasons and owns 11 career touchdown catches.

GRADE: C

OL: A consistent presence on the line, Joe Thomas is a perennial Pro Bowl selection at left tackle and has taken every snap since being selected third overall in the 2007 draft. Thomas has this football thing down, so Chudzinski will also rely on his as a leader in the locker room.

Right tackle was also a non-issue for the Browns a season ago after they took Mitchell Schwartz in the second round of the draft and he made 16 starts.

Jason Pinkston moved from tackle to guard as a rookie in 2011 and made 16 starts, but missed the final 10 games of the last campaign due to a blood clot in his lung. John Greco filled in and performed well, earning a new five-year deal this offseason, and could open as the Week 1 starter.

Center Alex Mack and right guard Shawn Lauvao both made 16 starts last year, giving Weeden a nice consistent front.

Pinkston and Lauvao have both been slowed by ankle injuries, meaning Oniel Cousins could be the Week 1 starter at right guard and seventh-round pick Garrett Gilkey is also in the mix.

GRADE: B+

DL: Cleveland's defensive lineman combined for 25 of the club's 38 sacks last year, but contributors Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker do not turn, while leading sack-getter Jabaal Sheard will drop back in the club's new 3-4 scheme.

Cleveland will look for healthy seasons from end Ahtyba Rubin (44 tackles, 2 sacks) and nose tackle Phil Taylor (14 tackles, 1 sack), with the two combining to miss 11 games a season ago. That led to rookies John Hughes and Billy becoming part of the line's rotation, so at least the experience was gained.

Bryant joins the group after spending his first four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, where he notched 11 1/2 sacks while playing in 63 games with 18 starts. He is massive at 6-foot-6, 310 pounds and the Browns signed him to a five-year deal despite his Feb. 24 arrest on a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief and ensuing viral mug shot in which his mouth is open, tongue half out and eyes half closed.

"I obviously made a mistake. I apologize for everything that happened. I feel like I have learned from it and I have moved on from that. I think I have done enough over the years I have been in the league to exhibit that that's really not the kind of person that I am," Bryant said when he was signed by the Browns in March.

With less demand to get to the quarterback, the strength of this line could be its ability to knock the ball loose. Last year, the line was responsible for seven of the team's 16 forced fumbles.

GRADE: B+

LB: A fresh look and added players give Cleveland's linebacking group a whole new identity, outside of middle man D'Qwell Jackson.

Jackson continues to shake off two pectoral tears that held him to just six games in 2009-10. He made 158 tackles in 2011 and another 118 last year while starting all 16 games both years. In addition to 3 1/2 sacks, he was solid in coverage by posting seven passes defensed and two picks while also forcing two fumbles.

He also has experience in the 3-4 from earlier Cleveland teams.

Craig Robertson is expected to lineup beside Jackson after the undrafted former practice squad member made 93 tackles in 16 games a season ago. Horton is a fan of Robertson's speed and size and he is quick to the ball.

The rush from the edge will come in the form of Kruger, Groves, Sheard and eventually Mingo.

Kruger was Cleveland's first big signing of free agency and the 27-year-old is coming off a Super Bowl title with Baltimore. He led the Ravens with nine sacks in the regular season and added another 4 1/2 in the playoffs.

The Browns invested $40 million into the linebacker hoping he can perform without playing alongside the likes of Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis.

"Just to be an every down player that is really affective and creating a strong force on defense," Kruger said of what his next progression is.

Sheard led the Browns in sacks as a defensive end over his first two NFL seasons, notching 8 1/2 as a rookie and seven last year, while Groves had a career year in 2012 in Arizona under Horton in a 3-4.

Then there is Mingo, who the Browns selected despite corners Dee Milliner and D.J. Hayden still on the board. Mingo had 15 sacks in three years at LSU and earned high praise for his character.

Growing pains and injuries could be the only thing that holds this group back from becoming an elite unit.

GRADE: B

DB: The Browns have a solid foundation in the secondary between corners Joe Haden and Buster Skrine in addition to safety T.J. Ward.

The 24-year-old Haden has shown a talent for getting his hands on the ball. He had six picks as a rookie in 2010 and added another three in 2012 despite missing five games due to injury and a suspension. He has also logged 47 passes defensed over his career.

"Joe has really stepped up as a leader, has stepped up as a professional. Joe wants to focus on improving and being more consistent and I see that in his approach. I think he has done a great job in that way and I'm expecting him to keep getting better and better," Chudzinski said of his corner.

Skrine lines up opposite of Haden and is a solid tackler, leading the Browns with 72 solo tackles last year.

Former Falcon Chris Owens was signed for depth and McFadden was selected 68th overall out of San Diego State. He knocked down 12 passes and took two of his three interceptions to the end zone last season to earn his third straight selection to the first-team All-Mountain West Conference.

The talented Ward starts at strong safety for a fourth straight season, while second-year pro Tashaun Gipson, who made three starts a year ago, should hold off sixth-round draft pick Jamoris Slaughter for the other starting nod.

GRADE: B-

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Browns saw both Phil Dawson and Joshua Cribbs make the Pro Bowl a season ago, but neither veteran returns for 2013.

Dawson opted to sign with San Francisco and will be replaced by another veteran in Shayne Graham, a long-time Cincinnati Bengal who spent last year with Houston. It was a solid campaign for the 35-year-old, who set a career high with 138 points by going 31-of-38 on field goal attempts while hitting all 45 of his extra points. His 28 touchbacks were also a career best.

Punter Spencer Lanning appears to be in line for the punting role after T.J. Conley was cut. Undrafted in 2011, Lanning has never punted in an NFL game and averaged 45.8 yards per punt on eight kicks in the preseason.

Long snapper Christian Yount, armed with a new five-year deal, is in his third season after handling the duties in all of 2012 and the last five games of the previous campaign.

Cribbs was always a threat to break a big run and averaged 27.4 yards per kick return last year. The speedy Benjamin will be his replacement after limited experience in the role last year.

GRADE: C+

COACHING: It was a homecoming for Chudzinski, who spent 2004 with the franchise as tight ends coach and returned to the club as offensive coordinator in 2007-08. Under his watch, Derek Anderson, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards were all Pro Bowlers.

This is his first head coaching job, so he was wise to bring in the experienced Turner. The two know each other as Chudzinski was his assistant head coach and tight ends coach in San Diego from 2009-10.

Turner is expected to call the plays and coach the quarterbacks, while Horton will run the defense after serving as the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator for the previous two seasons. He spent 10 years as a defensive back in the NFL and coached the position with the Pittsburgh Steelers before going to Arizona.

GRADE: C

THE SKINNY: The Browns are starting over yet again, but should be slightly ahead of the curve thanks to a young core and still seems moldable. Cleveland showed some good progress towards the end of the season, but playing in a division with Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati will wear you down fast.

Still, five wins is a low bar to jump over and the franchise will take any steps forward it can manage.

"I think we feel like we were better than our record indicated last year. We're a good football team. I am excited about the guys in our locker room and we are chomping at the bit to get started again," said Weeden.

Akron Children's Hospital wins appeal

The legal battle continues between Akron Children's Hospital and the parents of a 10-year-old Amish girl dying of cancer.

Just weeks ago a Medina County probate judge ruled in favor of the girl's parents, Andy and Anna Hershberger.

However on Tuesday an Ohio appeals court reversed that decision ruling in favor of Akron Children's Hospital, who now is seeking temporary guardianship over Sarah Hershberger to continue chemotherapy treatments.

Doctors say chemo could mean life or death for Sarah, but her Amish parents believe their faith in God can overcome modern science and are opting for a more holistic approach.

"Although there's all these dire medical predictions they (Sarah's parents) would refute that by saying this is matter beyond the province of mortal man," explained attorney John Oberholtzer, who is representing Sarah's parents.  "You have to have a kind of faith that a lot of us don't have...they absolutely have that faith."

Oberholtzer says his clients are now strongly considering asking the Ohio Supreme Court to weigh in on the case.   He also believes the potential legal precedent this case could set will impact families all over with regards to who should have the last word over a child's medical decisions when life or death is on the line.

"You need to think about that as a parent, and you can say this is isolated to somebody who is Amish... that's not quite right...if this can happen to Sarah Hershberger this can happen to anybody," said Oberholtzer.

On Wednesday Akron Children's Hospital released the following statement about the Ohio appeals court decision.

"Akron Children's Hospital is hopeful the Medina County Probate Court will decide it is in the best interest of this child to award limited guardianship. The guardian can then decide what course of treatment is in her best interest. The hospital will respect the court's ruling.

Our goal is to ensure that this child, like all children in our care, receives the most appropriate care, based on scientific evidence. Chemotherapy presents children with lymphoblastic lymphoma with their best, and essentially only, hope for survival.

There has never been an allegation of parental unfitness, nor has the hospital or anyone else requested legal or physical custody of this child. This involves a disagreement between providers and parents over what course of treatment is best for their child."

Community rallies to support man after vicious attack

CLEVELAND -- A small group of community activists has come together in support of a man with mental challenges, after he was viciously beaten last Wednesday, for no reason.

John Rager, 47, is in fair condition at MetroHealth Medical Center's brain trauma center, after the beating left him with serious brain injuries.

"Pain has no color," said members of Black on Black Crime, as they led a prayer circle in a parking lot on East 152nd, near Collinwood High School.

Activists expressed their support for Rager's sister, Jimilee Hoover, who attended Tuesday night's rally.

"He still has 12 staples in his head," Hoover said of her younger brother. "But with brain injuries, it's something different every day. I don't think he'll ever be able to work again.

Despite his learning disabilities, Rager worked each night on the late shift at Unger's Bakery in Cleveland Heights. On August 14, Rager's bicycle had a flat tire, so he was forced to walk from the bus stop toward his home in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood.

As he was walking along East 152nd Street, a group of men savagely beat his head and body, unprovoked, and left him to die. Fortunately a good samaritan later passed by and called police.

Hoover is determined to find justice for her younger brother. She had this message to his attackers: "You did this for sport? You did this for fun? It wasn't. You just ruined the lives of a kind man and his family," she said angrily.

A Facebook page -- John Needs Justice -- has been created to raise awareness and money for him and his wife, Dee Dee, who also has learning disabilities.

Additionally, Cleveland Councilman Mike Polensek has set up two funds -- one to raise money for John and another to raise reward money to find his attackers.

You can contribute to the victim fund at any local Key Bank branch. To donate to the reward fund, call Polensek's office at (216) 664-4236.

Cleveland police encourage anyone with any information about the incident to contact the Fifth District Headquarters of Cleveland Police at (216) 623-2589.

Woman guilty in antifreeze poisoning to be sentenced

CLEVELAND -- It's sentencing day for the local woman who was convicted of poisoning her fiance with antifreeze.

NOTE: We plan on streaming this sentencing hearing on WKYC.com once it begins at 11 a.m.

Two months ago, a jury found Holly McFeeture guilty on two counts of fatally poisoning Matthew Podolak's iced tea with antifreeze at their home in Old Brooklyn in late July 2006.

A pathologist with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office, who performed the autopsy on Matthew Podolak, determined he died from chronic intoxication of ethylene glycol -- the active ingredient in antifreeze.

In July 2006, Podolak began experiencing lower back pain and went to the doctor where he was treated for kidney stones.

On July 30, 2006, Podolak was taken to the hospital in pain. His condition deteriorated. He was in extreme pain, disoriented, and vomiting. Podolak died the next day.

Podolak's death was not ruled a homicide until 2010, after Cleveland police received a tip that ruled out suicide and accidental death.

McFeeture could get a maximum sentence of life without parole on one count, plus another 15 to life for the other count.

What you didn't know about King's 'Dream' speech

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

When the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. took the lectern at the March on Washington 50 years ago to deliver his "I Have a Dream" speech, the text in his hand didn't contain the words "I have a dream."

That refrain, and the part of the address it punctuated and propelled, was improvised on the spot. Having written a good speech - a working title was "Normalcy - Never Again" - King instead gave one of the greatest of the 20th century.

There are other things that most of us don't know about this storied speech. The march wasn't King's first use of the "dream" refrain. He came to rue the phrase, and by the time he died, the speech had faded from public memory.

King spoke on Aug. 28, 1963, at the biggest, most important civil rights demonstration in American history. It was the heart of the civil rights movement - eight years after the anti-segregation Montgomery bus boycott; three years after the lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville and Greensboro, N.C.; two years after the first Freedom Rides on interstate buses through the South; and three months after police in Birmingham, Ala., horrified the nation by using attack dogs and fire hoses against women and children protesting segregated public facilities.

At least 250,000 people had jammed the National Mall to demand "jobs and freedom," including passage of a civil rights bill. But all many people know or remember is King, preaching a gospel of hope from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Rarely has such a famous speech been surrounded by so many myths and misconceptions, according to historians who have studied the march and people who attended it.

• The rally was not, as often described, "Martin Luther King's March on Washington."

The march was officially led by the black labor leader A. Philip Randolph, who had advocated a similar rally in 1941 to demand equal opportunity in the war effort. King was just one of several march leaders.

"It was King's dream - not his march," said Eric Arnesen, a George Washington University civil rights movement historian.

• The march was far from the first time King told an audience, "I have a dream."

King employed the phrase, and the oratory it framed, a week earlier in Chicago; two months earlier at a mass rally in Detroit; and several other times in the previous year or so.

• Within two years of the march, King was saying that his optimistic dream of 1963 had turned into a "nightmare.''

King attributed his own growing discouragement to urban riots, the Vietnam War, indifference to black poverty and opposition to desegregation in Northern cities.

• Only King's murder rescued the speech from public oblivion.

Drew Hansen, author of The Dream, a book on the speech, said that between 1963 and 1968 it was "largely forgotten" - first, because of the crush of events, and later, as King's earlier optimism began to seem ill-founded and he became more controversial, especially for his opposition to the war.

"In '65 or '66, most people would not have said it was the most powerful speech ever," said William P. Jones, author of a new history, The March on Washington.

King's assassination on April 4, 1968, led the nation to rediscover the speech. It heard a statement of national purpose on a par with the Gettysburg Address or the Declaration of Independence - "one of those things that we look to,'' said Hansen, "when we want to know what America means."

A SPEECH TO REMEMBER

The name of King's most famous speech is on schools and street signs, on posters, pins and T-shirts. It's in a hip-hop song. It's been invoked by Nelson Mandela and the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. It's the centerpiece of a national holiday.

However, Hansen pointed out, "it almost didn't happen." If King hadn't improvised as he did, or died when he did, things might have been different.

On the day of the march, more than two-thirds of Negroes (as African Americans were then known) lacked the right to vote, attend integrated schools or use the same public facilities as whites.

But King's movement finally had made civil rights the nation's top domestic political issue. The summer would see 1,122 civil rights demonstrations around the nation and about 20,000 arrests, almost all in the South.

On the Wednesday morning of the march, Washington was tense. Outside the city, thousands of combat troops were ready to move in, in case of trouble. Many businesses were closed. White House lawyers had drawn up martial-law orders for President Kennedy to sign if necessary.

The crowd gathered slowly at the Washington Monument and marched to the Lincoln Memorial, where the movement's leaders would address them. King, not yet 35, went last.

He had worked on the speech over the previous four days, finally finishing a few hours before dawn in his suite at the Willard Hotel.

As millions watched on television - all three networks had cut away from regular programming - King began reading from typed text. He invoked the words of the president whose likeness loomed in the background: "Five score years ago ..." King said, the Emancipation Proclamation "came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night" of the slaves' captivity.

But 100 years later, he said, "the Negro still is not free." The promises of Lincoln's proclamation, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were like a "bad check." Now, he said, we're here to cash it.

After 10 minutes, he was more than halfway through a recitation that had been well received but was, as King biographer Taylor Branch would write, "far from historic" and in places "clubfooted."

Then, King looked up. He put aside his text, for he had seen - or just as likely sensed - an opportunity.

This in itself was not unusual; King rarely spoke from a text, preferring to assemble speeches and sermons from an array of what Hansen called his "set pieces" - bits of oratory based on Bible stories or verses, songs, old sermons and other sources.

Now, King began skipping whole paragraphs from his prepared text. Some on the platform noticed, including Clarence Jones, a King adviser who had worked on the speech. "He's off. He's on his own now. He's inspired," Jones told Hansen in 2002, four decades later.

Mahalia Jackson, who had performed earlier and was one of King's favorite gospel singers, cried, "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!"

Although it's not clear whether King heard her, he did.

"I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. It is a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"

Having raised his eyes, he now had to raise his voice to be heard over the growing applause. He continued to profess his dream, repeating the refrain seven more times, moving from justice and equality to something deeper - a human bond transcending race.

"I have a dream that some day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."

It was as if only once he was up there, gazing out, could King see a future many that day could not: "... in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today!"

To his wife, Coretta, it seemed King had forgotten time itself, that his words flowed "from some higher place."

He ended suddenly, returning to the speech that had been lying unread on the lectern for the last line: "Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty - we are free at last!"

For a moment the audience was stunned. Silence. Then, a rocking ovation.

Ralph Abernathy, King's deputy and a fellow preacher, told him, "Leader, you swept today."

At the White House, President Kennedy - who with King would produce much of 20th-century America's memorable oratory - turned to an aide: "He's damn good."

Kennedy and his aides had honed his inaugural address for weeks, and he had read its stirring words as written; at Gettysburg, Lincoln gave the speech he had written. But King created a masterpiece on the fly, "like some sort of jazz musician," said David J. Garrow, whose King biography, Bearing the Cross, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987. "It's the spontaneous parts of the speech that people remember."

Why did King decide to insert the "dream" section? He never really explained, and no one pressed him. When he spoke with Donald Smith, a graduate student, later that year, he didn't seem sure himself:

"I started out reading the speech, and I read it down to a point, and just all of a sudden I decided - the audience response was wonderful that day, you know - and all of a sudden this thing came to me that I'd used many times before, that thing about 'I have a dream.' I just felt I wanted to use it. I don't know why. I hadn't thought about it before that speech."

King's comment about "the audience" may refer to Mahalia Jackson's admonition, but he didn't mention her. Hansen, author of The Dream, thinks King sensed that the last section of his written speech did not match the emotions of the occasion and resorted to a riff he had used successfully for more than year, albeit one more commonly heard from a Baptist pulpit than on national TV.

After the march ended peacefully - not a single marcher was arrested - Kennedy met the leaders of the march at the White House.

When he walked into the Cabinet Room, the president looked at King and grinned. "I have a dream," he said.

Three months later, Kennedy was dead. His successor, Lyndon Johnson, rammed the Civil Rights Act through a previously unreceptive Congress by saying it was the best way to honor the fallen president.

'A NIGHTMARE'

King's speech was a hit, not just among blacks. Covered live by all three networks, it offered many whites their first exposure to the black sermonic tradition.

The speech soon began to recede, however. So much was happening so fast - the Birmingham church bombing the following month that killed four girls, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Selma-to-Montgomery marches, the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

And King's image changed. He began an unpopular and unsuccessful attempt to desegregate urban ghettos in the North. He came out against the war, alienating allies in the White House and organized labor. Race riots from Los Angeles to Newark seemed to suggest King's non-violent tactics were passé.

King inverted his own refrain. In 1965 he told an audience in Chicago, "I have had to watch my dream transformed into a nightmare." The lament became one of his set pieces.

But within days of his death, King's speech at the March on Washington became his signature, endlessly reprinted and replayed. It clearly had been the high point of his career, and a dream - because it's immortal - is all the more powerful in the face of death. King's dream, President Johnson told the nation, "has not died with him."

Also, it was easier to canonize the King who dreamed of a utopian future than the one who challenged the nation to dissolve the ghettos, stop the Vietnam War and guarantee the poor an annual income. When President Carter awarded King the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977, he said, "His dream sustains us yet."

King himself never gave up on it. On Christmas Eve 1967, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the weary pastor told his congregation:

"I am personally the victim of deferred dreams ... but in spite of that, I close today by saying I still have a dream, because, you know, you can't give up in life. If you lose hope, somehow you lose that vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream."

One more time, he restated the dream - judgment based on "content of character," not color of skin; "brotherhood will be more than a few words at the end of a prayer"; and "one day justice will roll down like water, and righteously like a mighty stream."

Less than four months later, he was dead. His dream, tattered and worn, lives on.

New Innerbelt Bridge takes shape, closes road

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 27 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- As crews put the final few girders in place on the inner belt bridge this week, more road closures and detours come with it.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is hoping to have the girders down that connect the two sides of the bridge by Friday, but Abbey Avenue will be closed for two weeks.

Motorist trying to get to Tremont can exit off of the existing Innerbelt Bridge, take the I-490 loop, or detour via Willey Avenue and Columbus Road.

Those operating businesses in Tremont say they see a little drop in customers with all the detours, but know they'll get through it.

Rocco Whalen, owner and operator of Fahrenheit says,"We've always lost our avenues to get here as far as an exit or Abbey road. It's connectivity... it connects us to Ohio City so it's going to hurt for a couple of weeks, but follow your detour signs. Maybe check out WKYC for detours and things like that."

Once the construction of this bridge is complete, they'll move traffic over to demolish the old one, before constructing yet another bridge right next to it.

Everything is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

Kent student shares story of Internet stalking ordeal

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

MEDINA, Ohio -- Parents, how many Facebook friends does your teen have? Or a better question is, how many do they actually know?

It's something a local woman wished she had considered more carefully in high school.

Allyssa Griffiths joined Facebook in 2007, when she was a student at Medina High School. Like many teens, she embraced the site with endless social possibilities.

"We posted a lot of pictures; you know, football games, homecomings and graduation. Vacations. You know the common things that you like to put on when you are in high school," Allyssa said on the day we visited her at Kent State.

When it came to Facebook friend requests, Allyssa said she accepted most of them.

"When I'd receive a friend request, and I would see 50 mutual friends or 100 mutual friends, I would just assume 'Oh, well this person that I know well is friends with them. They must be real.' And I would accept it. And that was something that my friends and I did and we never thought twice about it. That's where I went wrong with this," Allyssa admits.

Fast forward to 2011 and Allyssa has moved on from high school and is now wrapping up her first semester as a freshman at Kent State University.

She was taking a break from studying for finals and went to Twitter, another social media site she had joined. On a whim, Allyssa searched a hashtag she had tweeted out just hours earlier.

"Another account popped up with the exact same tweet, same hashtag. It was my picture, just a different name," Allyssa recalled. The name on the account that bore Allyssa's own photo was Lauren Ashley Cook.

Studying now abandoned, Allyssa searched Lauren's account and dug deeper. Allyssa soon found more Facebook, Tumblr, Google+ accounts, and blogs dating as far back as 2007.

All had Allyssa's personal pictures attached to fake names and fabricated stories.

"The pictures were all put in a different context from what I posted. I would post a picture from prom, and underneath there would be this long post about being depressed. Or one picture of a friend, and how it was a picture of her dead brother. And that person's not my dead brother. You know, it was almost surreal to look at these pictures and imagine them thinking of these scenarios," Allyssa said.

The imposter also preyed on Allyssa's close friends too. So together, they looked closely at their Facebook contacts and compared notes. One name and profile stood out. It was of a young woman whose friend request they all accepted. But no one could recall meeting her.

"She created a fake Facebook using the name Lisa Jones," Allyssa said.

Determined to find out more, Allyssa dug deeper and eventually connected with a young man from New Jersey who was social media friends with the fake Lauren Ashley Cook.

He had fallen victim to so-called "catfishing." The term is coined from the documentary "Catfish," which also became a regular MTV series.

"Catfish" is defined as using false information and fake pictures to pretend to be someone you are not. Often, it's done to attract romantic interests via social media sites.

After learning of the ruse, the young man offered to help. He had spoken with Lauren Cook on the phone and offered up the number.

It was from a Kentucky area code and immediately familiar to Allyssa.

"I started typing it into my phone and that's when the contact 'creep' popped up. Just a few months before her internet ordeal began, Allyssa got lewd texts and photos sent to her cell phone. She didn't know the sender, but threatened to go to police. The texts stopped, but Allyssa saved the number just in case.

"I just saved the number in my phone as 'creep' in case they ever did text me again," Allyssa recalled.

Armed with the Lauren Cook/Lisa Jones/Creep connection, Allyssa went to police.

"I was told that until Lauren makes a direct threat toward me or uses my name that it is not illegal because I allowed this Lisa Jones access to my pictures and information," Allyssa said.

There was little police could do with the phone number, too. It came from a pre-paid cell phone. Allyssa stripped her social media accounts, blocked contacts and for a time stopped posting pictures.

It might help protect her privacy in the future, but couldn't help what had happened in the past. A lesson learned too late, not just by Allyssa but by social media users young and old.

"They will friend people they don't know and that will, in essence, disable those privacy settings. You are in essence opening the door and saying 'what I have, I will share with you,' " said David Frattare, lead investigator of the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Allyssa tells us she has communicated with the imposter, who has apologized and has promised to stop. She's hopeful the ordeal will finally be over, but she is determined to move on with her life and focus on what she can control.

"I definitely have my faults in this. I'm just hoping that someone from somewhere can learn from my mistakes," Allyssa said.

Today she speaks to college groups and has launched a Facebook page dedicated to raising awareness about Internet stalking.

She works to educate people on how to protect their privacy and mistakes to avoid. Her experience hasn't soured her on social media. She hopes one day to find a career in it.

SANDUSKY -- New rides, improvements to Camp Snoopy, a roller coaster name change and hotel renovations are all part of Cedar Point's plan for next summer.

First, the Gemini Midway is getting a big transformation with a pair of new family rides in 2014.

Pipe Scream, a Disk'O Coaster, takes riders on a spinning journey over 302 feet of track.

As Lake Erie Eagles begins its cycle, the carriages will swing outward. Cedar Point says each ride carriage is equipped with a paddle to allow guests to alter their ride experience from "mild to wild."

In addition, changes are coming to the Camp Snoopy kids' area.

The kid-friendly Frog Hopper ride will be relocated to Camp Snoopy and re-themed as Woodstock's Airmail while the Jr. Gemini roller coaster will be renamed Wilderness Run and its entrance will be moved into Camp Snoopy. These two rides will join the Tilt-A-Whirl, Lolli Swing and Camp Bus, bringing Camp Snoopy's ride count up to nine rides, many of which parents can ride side-by-side with their children.

"We are excited about these new additions to the park," said Jason McClure, incoming Vice President and General Manager of Cedar Point. "Following the successful introduction of GateKeeper, we believe these new rides and upgrades will continue to make Cedar Point the perfect vacation destination for families of all ages."

The beginning of a two-year Hotel Breakers renovation project will also commence this winter. Phase one will include upgrading a portion of the exterior of Hotel Breakers, while phase two will take place over the 2014-2015 winter season and will feature upgrades to both the exterior and interior of the hotel. Located between the sandy shore of Lake Erie and the mountainous roller coasters of Cedar Point, Hotel Breakers features more than 500 rooms.

Earlier this month, Kings Island, which is Cedar Point's sister park near Cincinnati, announced plans to build Banshee -- the world's longest inverted roller coaster.

The youngster met several players and asked Santana and Kipnis if they would hit knock one out of the park for him.

How could they say no?

Santana, who is Niko's favorite player, hit a two-run homer in the first. Kipnis added a two-run shot in the third.

Niko's night was made complete when the Indians defeated the Twins 7-2.

'Trump University' sued by NY for its get-rich claims

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York's attorney general is suing Donald Trump for $40 million, saying the real estate mogul helped run a phony "Trump University" that promised to make students rich but instead steered them into expensive and mostly useless seminars.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump. Instead, Schneiderman says all they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture of Trump.

Schneiderman filed suit Saturday against the program and Trump, accusing them of engaging in persistent fraud, illegal and deceptive conduct and violating federal consumer protection law. He seeks the $40 million mostly to pay restitution to consumers.

There was no immediate comment from Trump's spokeswoman Saturday.

Six-turbine wind farm planned for Lake Erie

CLEVELAND -- LEEDCo has announced a six-turbine wind project will be built seven miles out in Lake Erie.

It's called "Icebreaker" and has been touted at Ohio's clean energy testing ground. LEEDCo President Lorry Wagner says the economic benefits will be huge.

"The project will create 525 construction jobs and generate millions for the local economy," he said. "This clean energy enterprise will be the catalyst for a new regional industry, based right here in Cleveland."

Terrestrial wind turbines have been around for years, and there have been studies showing a number of negative environmental impacts.

For avid outdoorsman Darren C. Brooks, they have started to clutter up his vacation pictures. He notes, "They're everywhere. They're pollution, literally pollution to your photos."

Though Brooks is talking about turbines on land, he doesn't want to see the same thing happen in Lake Erie.

"Every fisherman, every boater, every island dweller, they're going to have to look at these now, and again the big concern is, what's going to happen tomorrow?" he asked.

LEEDCo says its goal is to eventually have a wind farm offshore that produces 1500 kilowatts of electricity. That's 500 separate wind turbines.

They are asking consumers to support the project by signing a "Power Pledge," saying they will purchase a portion of their energy from wind-generated sources.

The six turbines are slated to be up and running by 2017.

MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade Police Department says it will discipline the officer who provided a police escort to Miami Heat star LeBron James to the Justin Timberlake/Jay Z concert.

In a statement released Thursday, the department says it has chosen to give the officer "informal counseling" after investigating the escort involving the athlete.

The statement says no further action will be taken.

It does not identify the officer.

James posted a video on social media sites before Friday's concert saying he was following a police escort on the wrong side of the street.

The video showed the police vehicles with their lights flashing.

The department said Monday that officers violated policy by providing the police escort.

It wasn't scheduled in advance, but all safety precautions appeared to have been taken.

Investigator: School children carry bulletproof backpacks

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 22 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Backpacks, bulletin boards, desk calendars and white boards are all items normally found inside a classroom.

Would making them bulletproof, so they can be turned into shields, save lives in a school shooting, such as those that happened in Newtown, Conn., and, closer to home, in Chardon and at Cleveland's Success Tech Academy?

A Cleveland company call Impact Armor Technology believes that it could. The company, which makes inserts for military vehicles designed to protect those inside from IEDs, now also manufactures a school safety line that includes these items. The company says they are strong enough to withstand bullets fired from handguns, and even from a 12-gauge shotgun.

The cost for an insert that makes the backpack bulletproof is $100. The insert, which weighs about a pound, is also used to make clipboards used by police officers.

Rob Slattery, a former police officer who works for Impact Armor Technology, told The Investigator Tom Meyer that the reinforced panels can provide extra protection.

"We're not saying this is a solution," he said. "We're saying this is an added layer of security."

School security expert Kenneth Trump says that while the company that developed this product might have good intentions, that doesn't mean its products will keep kids safe.

"There's a difference between feeling safe and actually being safer," says Trump. "As a father, I have to ask myself if I have to give my kid a bulletproof backpack, do I also need a bulletproof front pack, helmet and a Captain America shield?"

Impact Armor notes that its bulletproof school products will protect students from all handguns and shotguns -- but not from assault rifles, such as the AK-47 carried this week by Michael Brandon Hill, who fired shots in an elementary school office in Decatur, Ga.

Parents of school-aged children are divided on whether this is a product they would buy.

"I would definitely consider buying it, 'cause school ain't what it used to be when I was a kid," says Chris Broffman of Lakewood, who has a 12-year-old son. His wife, Sarah, says she too would pay $100 "to save my kid's life. Sold!"

Jeff Worron, also of Lakewood, has a sharply different viewpoint.

"Would I buy it for my kids? No," says Worron. Besides, he adds, "What am I going to do, take my backpack off and say, 'Wait, don't shoot until I get my backpack out and I can hold it up?' "

A number of school districts, including Cleveland, told us they were not inclined to purchase bulletproof products such as these -- both for reasons of cost and because of the message that it sends that schools are a place where kids can expect violence.

Roseann Canfora, spokeswoman for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, says the district does not recommend such products.

Rather, she says, "In our schools, we use a combination of hardware (surveillance cameras, metal detectors, X-ray machines, wands, etc.) and also our human ware (social-emotional learning curriculum and supports) to keep weapons out of our schools and to keep students safe."

Other school district leaders say the money spent on such items could instead be used for staff training, crisis management and support services for students.

Some districts, including Chardon, where shooter T.J. Lane killed three classmates, said the issue was too sensitive to even comment on.

Slattery says Impact Armor has sold its products to school systems locally and nationally, though the company refused to identify the schools and the amount spent, citing security reasons.

As for how well the inserts work? Channel 3 had a couple of sharpshooters test the bulletproof shields.

Sgt. Kim Rodecker fired at the backpack insert from about 10 feet away with a .357 Magnum. The bullet made an impression on the shield, but did not penetrate.

Mark King fired shots from a rifle, which produced a bulge, but also did not make it through.

Slattery puts it this way: "We're not out there beating the drum, saying 'You need this' and 'Your kid is in danger -- the boogey man is out there.'

"We don't see anything wrong, however, with coming up with products that add another layer of safety to school security.

While the backpack inserts cost $100, the larger desk blotters and bulletin boards run about $350.

Trump says that a lot of the best security inside schools is invisible -- and it includes "training your staff, having relationships, getting psychological and support services for children, working with first responders, having crisis management meetings."

He adds, "There's a high risk of giving people a false sense of security by giving them bulletproof products instead of focusing on the day-to-day things that educators and children need to do."

New questions raised about Pilot Flying J and "shell" company

CLEVELAND -- A Knoxville attorney says Jimmy Haslam's family company could be tied to an alleged "shell company."

New documents claim that an Arkansas company, National Trucking Reclamation Services LLC, was created to resolve the civil cases against Pilot Flying J.

National Trucking was the second company to sue Pilot Flying J and the first to agree to its settlement offer.

Lane Kidd incorporated the company on April 22, just one week after the FBI raided Pilot's headquarters.

Kidd also heads the Arkansas Trucking Association, a group that lists Pilot Flying J as a member and major contributor.

The trucking company and the association even using the same address -- down to the suite.

Lawyers like Drew McElroy, who represents five trucking companies which have sued PFJ, are questioning Pilot's proposed settlement.

The settlement seeks to settle all civil claims against Jimmy Haslam's company.

McElroy says there's no way National Trucking purchased gas from Pilot prior to the raid, because the company didn't exist. How could it have been cheated?

But PFJ's response to their suit puzzles him.

"Instead of asking that (the suit by National Trucking) be dismissed, they are the ones that (Pilot Flying J) run to, and are the primary plaintiffs in the action where they've had the settlement, said McElroy. "There may not be any fire there, but there's sure does seem to be a lot of smoke."

Under the agreement, lawyers for the trucking companies will share in fees totaling as much as $14 million, saving Pilot money defending more than 20 suits it faces.

If trucking firms believe they've been tricked again, it could cost Jimmy Haslam more money and more time cleaning up the mess.

Jimmy Haslam's attorney, Aubrey Harwell, says Pilot has no details about National Trucking or any other companies that have filed suit.

"Pilot had no knowledge or involvement in the setting up of that company, the running of that company or the operating of that company, OK?" Harwell said in a phone interview with Channel 3's Sara Shookman.

And as for any allegations of wrongdoing on Pilot's behalf, "That's absolutely and totally wrong. There's no basis at all for that," said Harwell. "If they suggest that, that's outrageous."

Kidd, the man in the middle of all this, told Channel 3 News he can't speak openly about the topic right now because everything hasn't been settled legally.

"I want to let the documents on file with the court speak for themselves but may issue a statement tomorrow to simply reply to the silly innuendos," said Kidd.

If there is no fire as McElroy stated, what could be the explanation here?

One possibility is perhaps National Trucking could be a broker for several smaller trucking companies, and therefore could have been set up intentionally for the purposes of filing the lawsuit, on behalf of others.

In that case, attorneys like McElroy could be raising these questions with the hope that Pilot releases some information in response.

McElroy, representing Atlantic Coast Carriers, has a hearing regarding discovery of evidence, a motion to depose Jimmy Haslam under oath and other motions in front of a Knoxville judge Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Attorneys for Pilot Flying J have filed motions to prevent sharing evidence or the questioning of corporate leaders, like Haslam.

Bradley Manning says he wants to live as a woman

NEW YORK -- Bradley Manning says he plans to live as a woman and begin hormone therapy, a day after the soldier was sentenced to 35 years in prison for sending classified information to WikiLeaks.

In a written statement provided to NBC's "Today" show on Thursday morning, Manning said he planned to live as a woman named Chelsea.

A military judge announced the sentence in Manning's court-martial on Wednesday. Manning's struggle with gender identity disorder -- his sense that he was a woman trapped in a man's body -- was a key part of the defense.

Attorneys had presented evidence of Manning's struggle with gender identity, including a photo of the soldier in a blond wig and lipstick sent to a therapist.

Mysterious illness killing dogs in southwest Ohio

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 21 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

NORWOOD -- A Norwood pet resort in Cincinnati remains closed after several dogs became mysteriously sick and died.

The Pet Spot says on its Facebook page that its independent investigation could not find a definite cause of what may have made the dogs sick, but it will remain closed until lab results from Ohio State are released later this week.

The dogs were healthy one day then developed bloody diarrhea and bloody vomiting the next. The ones that died didn't respond to treatment.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture put out a statement urging dog owners to monitor their dogs, but so far there haven't been any cases outside southwest Ohio.

Meanwhile in Northeast Ohio, vets are seeing an increase in another problem -- a respiratory illness that's unlike the typical kennel cough or respiratory infections.

Dr. Kane Henderson of West Park Animal Hospital warns pet owners to pay attention for signs of cough, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. If seen, seek medical attention for the animal immediately.

Some speculated the dog illness might have been related to an Iams dog food voluntary recall for suspected salmonella contamination, but none of the dogs involved in the Cincinnati case ate that dog food. Click Here for more Iams recall information.

Gay couple's protest leads Cedar Point to cancel wedding contest

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

AKRON, Ohio -- Eric Morrison and Scott Kenimond say they saw Cedar Point's contest on its OnPoint blog: 13 couples to get married during September's Friday the 13th opening of Cedar Point's HalloWeekends.

But when they learned the offer didn't apply to same sex couples, they took action.

"We both have a love of roller coasters," said Kenimond. The couple is in love, and in love with coasters, so a contest to get married at Cedar Point for the opening night of HalloWeekends seemed just right.

PHOTOS | Looking back at HalloWeekends 2012

"You were going to be married by a Zombie, or renew your vows by a Zombie. And you had to dress like Zombies," Kenimond said. "So it was just kind of cool because we both love Halloween, we both love roller coasters, we both love Cedar Point, so I just thought it was like, the dream thing."

But the fine print said only a man and woman could be selected due to marriage laws in Ohio.

Kenimond says other ceremonies the ad alluded to, aren't legal either.

"Vow renewals are not legal weddings so I don't understand why they were excluding commitment ceremonies," he said. "So we just set out to raise some awareness and maybe get them to open it up as opposed to keeping it shut."

PHOTOS | GateKeeper soars to life at Cedar Point

To their disappointment, the couple's social media campaign led the park to end the contest.

Kenimond says Cedar Point could have chosen any couples it liked, but everyone should have a shot at it.

"In today's world, it's just not a fair thing to do to leave people out," he said.

While they won't get the zombie wedding of their dreams, these thrill seekers may still take the plunge at America's rocking roller coast.

"It would have been cool you know. It would have been like, the ultimate commitment ceremony," said Kenimond. "(But) I still love the park. I still absolutely adore the park. There's no place like it on the planet."

Kenimond says he recently signed a petition to put legalizing gay marriage on the ballot in 2014.

Kenimond says he recently signed a petition to put legalizing gay marriage on the ballot in 2014.

A spokesperson for Cedar Point sent me this statement: "Cedar Point does not discriminate against any guest for any reason. The 'Friday the 13th Wedding' event was created as a fun, in-park promotion to generate excitement for the kickoff of HalloWeekends. There was no negative intent. When the promotion logistics started to take on political undertones, as indicated by several guests who gave us feedback, it was decided that now is not the best time for this event. Cedar Point does not take any official stance on political issues. Outside of official park-provided promotions, Cedar Point does offer opportunities for all couples to have weddings, commitment ceremonies and other events here at the park. We encourage guests to contact us if they're interested in planning such an event."

'Shake and bake' meth labs pose risk to public

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 20 Agustus 2013 | 21.08

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

BRIMFIELD, Ohio -- Just five years ago, meth lab busts in Ohio were declining.

But a recent resurgence of the drug has law enforcement agencies concerned about your safety. Meth labs commonly used today are small, portable and popping up in places you wouldn't expect, like cars and the side of roads.

"It's a very serious problem," says Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver. "What we're dealing with now are the one-pot methods or bottle meth labs."

It's known as the "shake and bake" method, and these small-scale labs are a growing trend across Northeast Ohio.

"It is a 2-liter bottle, usually the main component is Coleman lantern fluid," explains Brimfield Police Sgt. David Knarr. "[People] tend of use lithium battery strips and water to form their chemical reaction."

These labs are easy to make, portable and have caused an uptick in meth labs in the state.

The number of meth labs seized has increased from 112 in 2008 to 635 already this year.

In Summit County alone this year, there have been 191 meth labs incidents, and the "shake and bake" method poses a serious risk to the public.

"A lot of times when [users] are through with these bottles, they toss them out the window of a car, so you could conceivably come across some chemicals in a soda bottle, a 2-liter soda bottle, you may think it's old soda or something else and pick it up, sometimes those things can be volatile and explode," explains Chief Oliver.

If you come across the components of one of these labs, you should immediately stop what you're doing and call police, says Chief Oliver.

As this method becomes more prevalent, police in Northeast Ohio are standing their ground.

"We pursue it relentlessly," says Chief Oliver.

Kidnapping suspect dead, missing woman found alive

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Police say a suspected kidnapper is dead and the woman he allegedly abducted has been found alive.

35-year-old Kenya Pierce, who was kidnapped at gunpoint during the weekend, was found early Monday at a location on West 42nd and Mapledale.

Her alleged abductor, 35-year-old Derek Hudson, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. He's accused of kidnapping Pierce after shooting two of his own relatives.

Authorities say they were tipped to that location around 7 a.m. after a neighbor spotted the suspect's car parked on Mapledale. Upon their arrival, police saw both the suspect and victim inside the vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle, Hudson reportedly shot himself in the head.

Pierce was taken to a local hospital, but authorities would not indicate if she was injured.

Police say it all started Saturday morning when an argument broke out at a home in the 12400 block of Chesterfield Avenue.

The owners of the home, identified as Hudson's aunt and uncle, went upstairs to see what the argument was about. That's when police say the two were shot by Hudson.

The victims, 52-year-old Ethel Munds and 55-year-old Andre Munds, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. One has since been released from the hospital, the other remains in treatment.

Police say Hudson then took Pierce at gunpoint and fled the scene.

Hudson was released on parole earlier this year after serving 10 years for killing Pierce's boyfriend.

Sunday, Pierce's mother pleaded with the suspect to let her daughter go.

Akron archaeology students look for clues to our past

For tens of thousands of years, people have called Northeast Ohio home.

It was a crossroads on the ancient landscape, and those who lived here back then left us clues about their lives.

Next to the butterflies and the behind the goldenrod in this Hudson meadow, archaeology students from the University of Akron are unearthing history.

Professor Linda Whitman and her field study class surveyed a new Summit County Metropark.

There are four dig sites in the meadow.

Two have yielded clues to the areas prehistoric past. The dig is a slow process and all the dirt needs to be sifted.

Eric Olson found a cobble of chert, or flint, in this excavation.

Chert flakes were used to make all sorts of tools, including arrowheads.

That excitement and the knowledge that comes with studying the artifacts links us to our historic and prehistoric past.

East Cleveland: Despite problems, some see better future

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

EAST CLEVELAND -- Longtime East Cleveland resident Gwen Miller and new resident Roosevelt  James have one thing in common.

They both think the problem-plagued city is on the way to turning the corner to a brighter future.

"I think it's getting better. It's going to get better. That's why I'm not going nowhere," Miller said.

James, who just moved into a new building in the city, said, "It's improving. I think they are trying to get it right."

The city has many longstanding pluses. Wealthy John D. Rockefeller called East Cleveland home and bequeathed it lots of land.

Forest Hills Park is a majestic space in need of better upkeep.

East Cleveland has more "millionaires' row" mansions than Cleveland. Some of the region's richest VIPs called the city home.

And new housing may lead a possible comeback.

The city is positioned next door to thriving University Circle, which has little space to develop new housing for the army of workers at hospitals, museums and Case Western Reserve University.

University Circle Inc. just partnered to develop a complex of apartments in East Cleveland for workers and students.

Univercity Circle's head Chris Ronayne said, "We leased up immediately. East Cleveland was and will be again a home for a University Circle work force."

There's talk of possible expansion. Ronayne claims a half dozen developers are checking out East Cleveland sites.

Lots of abandoned properties in East Cleveland are being demolished to make way for possible development. Cuyahoga County's Land Bank is involved.

Both candidates for mayor see a brighter city future amid the development.

Incumbent Mayor Gary Norton said, "I think we're going to be in much better shape in 10 years. We will look different."

Council president and Norton's chief opponent, Dr. Joy Jordan, said, "I've fallen in love with this community. I believe we can turn this around. ... I want to be a change agent for the future."

Whoever wins, the mayor will have to juggle solving present massive problems with developing potential projects.

Norton said, "It's like performing emergency surgery on a patient to save them so you can build the hospital around them."

East Cleveland's other pluses include the new Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Health Care Center, being on the RTA Health Line linking the city's two biggest job centers, downtown and University Circle, General Electric's long-term presence at its Nela Park complex and a renowned and stirring Shaw High School marching band.

"Superb," Miller calls it.

Poverty, crime, blight and a City Hall government that often seems to be more of a problem than problem-solver remain overwhelming issues. But East Cleveland's decline didn't happen overnight. And any rebound and recovery will take time too.
