CLEVELAND -- Interstate 90 remains closed in both directions as crews scramble to get a damaged highway bridge taken down after a dump truck slammed into it.
The accident happened on I-90 westbound between E. 156th Street and E. 185th Street around 6:45 a.m Saturday.
Police say the truck from Big Blue Trucking out of Warren, Ohio, was traveling with a raised trailer when it hit the bridge. After hitting the bridge the truck then rolled over.
Police have closed the highway in both directions because the bridge is severely damaged.
Unsafe conditions force the Ohio Department of Transportation to bring in another crane. Crews are rushing to dismantle the bridge but the delay in bringing the second crane may push back the reopening of Interstate 90 one more day.
"ODOT will not reopen I-90 until it is 100% safe for the traveling public to drive though this area." said Amanda Lee.
Vehicles traveling eastbound on I-90 will exit on E.152nd Street and head south to St. Clair Avenue. Then take St. Clair Avenue east to Babbitt Road. Head north on Babbitt Rd to Lakeland Boulevard. Head east on Lakeland to get back onto I-90 eastbound.
Vehicles traveling westbound are asked to exit at E. 260th Street to Babbit Road, north to St. Clair Avenue and onto E. 152nd to access I-90.
Jennifer Ciaccia with the Cleveland Police Department tells Channel 3 the truck driver Michael Edwards, 35, will be cited for all appropriate traffic violations.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol will also be apart of the investigation. Troopers will inspect the truck for violations.
