Police: Amanda Berry visits Seymour house before Castro sentencing

CLEVELAND -- On Thursday we may hear some of the first details about what happened inside 2207 Seymour Avenue as Ariel Castro is sentenced for his crimes.

Castro pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape and other crimes for a total of 937 charges Friday, agreeing to a minimum sentence of life in prison without parole, plus 1,000 years time.

His sentencing hearing is likely to be a window into what a trial might have looked like, a chance for both sides to present to Judge Michael Russo what they believe are the facts and determining factors in this case.

Read Castro plea agreement

"You have not seen the evidence yet of what took place. We'll make a presentation on that next Thursday," said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, in a news conference following the plea hearing.

McGinty says the state will call witnesses to the stand to explain Stockholm Syndrome and other coping mechanisms that allowed the women to survive captivity.

Detectives will also testify on some of the horrors they faced inside.

"He's a manipulator. He has no remorse, and we will elaborate on that at the sentencing," said McGinty.

Castro himself seemed to be searching for a chance to explain Friday.

"My addiction to pornography and my sexual problem has really taken a toll on my mind," he told the court. "I would like to state that I was also a victim as a child and it just kept going," he said, before Judge Russo interrupted him.

"That's certainly something you can bring up at your sentencing hearing," said Russo.

Castro, his family members or other defense witnesses are likely to discuss the alleged abuse and sexual addictions he mentioned out of turn. His victims get that same chance to speak.

But sources close to the family of Gina DeJesus tell us that neither she nor Amanda Berry or Michelle Knight is likely to be in the courtroom.

Prosecutors or a victim's advocate can deliver a statement on behalf of the victims, if they so choose.

An officer on duty on Seymour Avenue told Channel 3 News Amanda Berry visited the house Tuesday afternoon, spending about 15 minutes outside talking to neighbors.

The house is scheduled to be demolished "as soon as possible," according to McGinty, once it's in the hands of the Cuyahoga County Land Bank.

One thing is certain: theree's no set witness list required to be presented to the court before the sentencing begins. Who will or won't be appearing could be changing even throughout the day on Thursday.

Russo expects a long day of evidence from both parties. Channel 3 News will have gavel-to-gavel coverage on air and on wkyc.com beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.

During more recent visits to the house, Anthony Castro says his father would wave him in a back door and they would briefly talk in the kitchen.

He says most of his visits there were spent outdoors.

Ariel Castro, 53, will be sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty last week to more than 900 counts against him. He was charged in the disappearance of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight -- all of whom he held captive in his home for years.

Cleveland: RTA drivers fight human trafficking

CLEVELAND -- The decision came coincidentally, just after Ariel Castro's three women victims were rescued from their captivity and abuse.

RTA chose to become the nation's first transit system to respond to a federal request to combat human trafficking.

RTA spokesperson Mary Shaffer said, "Because we have so many eyes and ears on the street, it may give us a chance to help somebody in need."

So far 1500 workers have taken the voluntary training which includes viewing a video.

The system plans to install placards with the theme "Look below the surface," to alert 200,000 daily commuters what the signs are for trafficking victims in trouble.

The program amounts to an extension of the existing Safe Place campaign. All buses and trains have yellow and black diamond- shaped signs alerting juveniles who are runaways or have problems they can ask the driver to help them get assistance.

Shaffer said, "We have a couple reports a month .... usually a juvenile will go up to a driver and say  'I need help' and we've been able to help them."

The agency is paying for the cost of the placards and training.

Shaffer said helping one person would be worth the modest cost.

Transit Union President William Nix thinks the program makes sense.

Drivers have been concerned about their own security lately with several incidents involving confrontations or incidents with passengers.

But Nix says they want to do all they can to protect the public.

First on Scene: Officers react to Castro plea deal

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Friday was also a memorable day for the first officers on scene at Seymour Avenue who helped to rescue Amanda, Gina, and Michelle.

With Ariel Castro scheduled to be sentenced to life without parole next week, those officers spoke out for only the second time since the Miracle in Cleveland recalling new details about what they discovered inside Castro's home and the moments that followed which they say they'll never forget.

"I ended up climbing through the bottom of the door where Amanda Berry had kicked out the bottom panel of the door in her escape," explained Cleveland police officer Michael Tracy, who was the first to break through Ariel Castro's door. "If I had to describe the house...it was nothing in the house...I was just looking for people," said Tracy.

"I remember going to the grand jury and seeing photos and I didn't even remember if I had to describe how the basement was it was nothing in the basement.  I think everybody that was involved in this incident it was just tunnel vision just looking for survivors looking for people."

According to Tracy basic instincts and tunnel vision quickly took over when officers were searching for the girls, a miraculous discovery he and others still cannot put into words.

"Amazement, I mean the words can't even explain when we looked at her face (referring to Amanda Berry) and I looked at my partner and said I think that's her," said Tracy.

"It was pretty shocking and it was miraculous, it was a great day today...I think is a conclusion to it," said Commander Keith Sulzer who was also present.  "Just ear to ear smiles, they probably couldn't believe it themselves that they were out of that house."

With Castro now slated to spend the rest of his life behind bars, both officers hope the girls can finally find some peace.

"I think that was the smart thing for him to do...I think it's a good thing for the community, I absolutely think for us as a community we gotta heal," said Commander Sulzer.

"I have a daughter, she's 16 it could've happened to her," said Officer Tracy.  "I'm just happy for the girls that they're safe and they're home to their families."

What will be put in place of Ariel Castro's house?

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 26 Juli 2013 | 21.08

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- As the steps move forward toward demolishing Ariel Castro's home on Seymour Avenue, neighbors and strangers alike have ideas on what should happen to the space.

Thursday, a demolition inspector from the Land Bank was on site at 2207 Seymour Avenue, taking pictures of Castro's house and the two vacant houses to the west.

While the Land Bank does not own the properties, they want to acquire as much land as possible to be put to use to benefit the community, the inspector told Channel 3.

Castro still owns the house at 2207, but it is in foreclosure.  Currently, no one can access the building, as it is considered evidence in the criminal case.

But once the case is over -- if Castro pleads, or at the conclusion of a trial -- investigators will release the condemned home to the City of Cleveland.

Cleveland City Council members have received all kinds of suggestions on what to do with the property.

Some have suggested bringing in Habitat for Humanity or a similar organization, to renovate the property.

Neighbors like Javier Marti want to see it demolished and turned into a park.

"It's an eyesore. I don't want no reminder of what happened there," said Marti, who lives across the street on Seymour Ave.

Ward 14 City Councilman Brian Cummins says, since the beginning the consensus has been that the home where Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight were kidnapped and abused for a decade, needs to go.

"Our gut feeling, from knowing the area, knowing the people on the street, knowing the context of investors is, no one is going to be interested in investing in this street for a couple of years," said Cummins.

It's a parallel situation to that of Imperial Avenue, where Anthony Sowell murdered 11 women in his home.

When Sowell was sentenced to death in August 2011, it took about four months for his home to be demolished.

Today it stands an empty field.

It's unclear if the lot at 2207 Seymour will become anything more.

"What is the most respectful thing based in the survivors interests, and the interests of the residents who live on that street? They should be the ones guiding our decisions," said Cummins.

Cummins hopes, in a few years the City of Cleveland can look at reinvesting in Seymour Avenue; not just the property at 2207, but in fixing up many of the homes on this street.

One by one they came to look in East Cleveland. The same area where the bodies of  Sheetisha Sheeley, Shirellda Terry and Angela Deskins were found.

Volunteers and the community group Black on Black Crime Inc. covered a lot of ground.

The call was for 300 men to join the search. About 30 showed up but the message was still strong.

Leonard Davis volunteered his time and said, "It is my duty as a man to help after these atrocious crimes. I need to get involved."

They searched woods and abandoned homes. The idea was for the volunteers be seen so others would join.

No new victims were found and this group hopes to drive some of the fear out of East Cleveland.

Suspected E. Cleveland killer investigated for human trafficking

MANSFIELD -- The investigation into the murders of three East Cleveland women led federal and local authorities to Poplar Street in Mansfield.

"What?! You're from Cleveland?" recalled neighbor Eva Carpenter, of her reaction when teams of investigators spread out on the street to interview neighbors.

"They were just coming out everywhere, these guys, and I'm like, 'What's going on?'" she said.

EXPANDED COVERAGE | East Cleveland murders

Law enforcement sources tell Channel 3 News, that new evidence suggests a possible link between accused serial killer, Michael Madison, and human trafficking.

Neighbors said investigators described vehicles, and a bi-racial couple, and asked them if they were seen in the neighborhood. None of the residents who spoke to Channel 3 News, said they saw the cars or the people whom authorities described.

Residents said investigators showed particular interest in a vacant lot where a dilapidated home once stood, before it was torn down a couple of years ago.

An FBI spokesperson confirmed that agents were canvassing the neighborhood on Tuesday, and said they are following up on all leads, but gave no other details.

Law enforcement sources tell Channel 3 News that investigators are not ruling out Madison's involvement in other crimes, or that he may not have acted alone in the murders.

Madison, 35, faces charges of kidnapping and aggravated murder in the slayings. He is a registered sex offender, who served four years in prison beginning in 2002.

East Cleveland Police responded to a call about a foul odor last Friday, and discovered a decomposed body wrapped in plastic bags in a garage. Madison was arrested after a short standoff with police.

Two more bodies were found Saturday, after police questioned Madison.

The first known victim was identified as Angela Deskins, 38, of Cleveland. The last two victims have been identified as Shirellda Terry, 18, of East Cleveland, and Shetisha Sheeley, 28, of Cleveland.

The possibility of a link between the triple murders and this Mansfield neigbhorhood, some 85 miles away, has residents shocked and concerned.

"It bothers me a lot because I have kids," said Korey Florence. "There are a lot of kids who play out here."

"It's nerve-racking," said April Clinton. "Especially considering the history of the crimes [in East Cleveland], and that the women were all living close by."

The Browns are also giving fans the opportunity to give back to the community while at training camp. Charities will be set up for blood drives, food drives and back-to-school clothing drives.

And if you're a fan of Fahrenheit or Rosie and Rocco's, Chef Rocco Whalen is setting up his Fahrenheit food truck outside camp so fans can get gourmet "Cleveland-centric" food.

Investigator: Pain doctor accused of sexual abuse, negligence

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

AKRON, Ohio -- An Akron doctor who specialized in pain management is being accused of negligence and of sexually abusing his patients.

A jury recently ordered the pain clinic at which James Bressi was on staff  -- Summit Pain Specialists -- to pay $3 million to a patient who was paralyzed after being treated by Bressi.

The lawyer representing that patient calls Summit Pain Specialists a "pill mill."

In 2010, the pain clinic moved from Cuyahoga Falls Hospital to a medical office building owned by Akron General Hospital.

The clinic is not affiliated with Akron General, though the exterior signs can be misleading.

Another lawsuit against Summit Pain Specialists alleges that Bressi engaged in sexual misconduct with eight female patients.

It goes on to say that those who worked for the pain clinic, including co-owner Dr. Robert Geiger, were notified of this and "by failing to intervene to prevent this ongoing contact, also failed to protect the women."

In a report filed with the Stow Police Department, one patient said she was raped in an attack that left bruises on her stomach.

Two other patients of Dr. James Bressi say he engaged in masturbation, using the patient.

Bressi stopped seeing patients in March. His name has been removed from the sign outside the Summit Pain Specialists office.

Neither Bressi nor Geiger would comment on the allegations.

Dave Motz is the patient who sued the Summit Pain Clinic for negligence and won. Motz suffered from chronic back pain and went to the clinic for relief of his pain.

Instead, a series of shots made the pain worse.

"They did one," says Motz's attorney, Dennis Lansdowne. "He got no relief. They said, 'Come back.' They did another one. Got no relief. They said, 'Come back.'

"Finally they did the third and they paralyzed him."

As Motz puts it, "It was the most sickening feeling I ever had. I was crying."

After that third shot, he felt nothing from the waist down. He still doesn't.

His life changed dramatically -- for the worse. Now he is 60 and confined to a wheelchair. He depends on constant daily care from his wife.

Lansdowne questions the quality of the care that the clinic was or is able to provide, based on the number of patients seen there each day.

"When you're running 200 people a day through a clinic with three doctors, somebody is going to get hurt," he says.

That somebody was Dave Motz.

"I never got the feeling back in my leg," Motz says. "There is no recovery."

The $3 million he was awarded by a jury is money he will use to pay for a wheelchair ramp, a stair lift, medicine, and home health care.

"They rendered him a paraplegic, and they didn't do anything for his pain," says Lansdowne. "He's left with paralysis and the pain he went to get treated for in the first place."

Another lawyer who is suing the pain clinic says as many as 18 women have complained to police about Dr. Bressi.

According to the lawsuit, Bressi "engaged in conduct which was outrageous and would shock the conscience of a normal individual."

The Stow police chief declined comment, saying its investigation is ongoing.

Interestingly, while Summit Pain is accused of operating as a pill mill, Bressi served on an advisory board to state lawmakers who drafted new regulations that crack down on pain clinics that serve as pill mills.

Victim's family: Everyone who knew her loved her

Angela Deskins. Photo via Northeast Ohio Missings Persons Database.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The family of Anglea Deskins, one of the three women found dead in East Cleveland over the weekend, describe her as a beautiful, sweet, kind hearted woman.

Her sister, Catana Deskins, released the following statement:

"Angela Deskins was a beautiful, sweet, kind hearted woman. She was raised in Novelty, Ohio by her father Robert Deskins and her step-mother Linda Deskins. Everyone who knew her loved her. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and aunt who truly cared about her family and friends. She is loved so much and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Our family would appreciate privacy during this time."

Deskins -- listed as victim #2 -- was one of three bodies found wrapped in plastic garbage bags in an East Cleveland neighborhood.

Authorities released her identity at a press conference Monday morning.

Deskins was listed in the Northeast Ohio Missing Persons Database effective July 1, 2013.

The press conference held by city officials was part of an investigation surrounding 35-year-old Michael Madison, a registered sex offender now charged with aggravated murder and kidnapping.

Police exclusively told WKYC early Monday that Madison had confessed to one of the killings. Authorities also say Madison has been cooperative.

The other two victims have not yet been identified.

NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio -- Police say the early morning failure of a high-pressure pipe at a New Franklin gas well was mistaken for an explosion and led to the evacuations of hundreds of residents.

Detective Mike Hitchings said the failure of a high-pressure gas line at a Dominion well caused a loud noise that some residents reported as an explosion.

The incident was reported just after 6 a.m. Monday on the east side of the city and led authorities to evacuate residents.

No injuries were initially reported.

Several roadways had been temporarily closed, but all were re-opened and the evacuated residents were permitted to return to their homes by 8 a.m.

CLEVELAND -- People of East Cleveland are shocked after three bodies were discovered wrapped in plastic. The first was discovered Friday followed by two more Saturday.

Sunday volunteers from the neighborhood were told to expect to find more remains in the area of Shaw and Hayden avenues.

Community members, alongside police, searched over 12 streets and roughly 50 abandoned homes for evidence of more victims that may be part of a serial killing spree.

During the search cadaver dogs lead investigators to a lot near the area where 3 other bodies were found. Other cadaver dogs also hinted at the same area.

Three crime scene trucks and an evidence recovery team were brought in to check the lot. Evidence technicians analyzed the area for hours but nothing turned up.

The search was called off last night.

Police plan to hold a news conference Monday at 11 a.m.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty was also at the crime scene Sunday evening.

On Sunday, Police Chief  Ralph Spotts, told neighbors and media they think one to two more bodies maybe in the East Cleveland neighborhood.

Two dozen residents are combed the area where the first three women were found.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says it may take up to several days as they work to identify the women found. The bodies are in an advanced decomposition state.

Saturday

On Saturday, police located two bodies, bringing the total up to three homicides in two days.

Investigators have expanded the blocked off the area and detectives are on the scene searching abandoned homes.

East Cleveland Police say that the cases are related. All three victims are female and were found in garbage bags.

One of the women had on a leotard top. The other woman had on a green sweatshirt/jacket and a green and pink orchid tattoo on her thigh.

Police believe the women were killed within the last six to ten days.

Police added that one of the women was found 150 feet from a garage in a field covered by a bush. The other woman was thrown through a window into an abandoned home's basement.

Friday

On Friday, police say they were involved in a standoff with a suspect in the homicide of one female found in an East Cleveland garage.

The standoff was at Chickasaw Avenue and East 197th Street near the City of Euclid border around 4:30 p.m.

A police negotiator was seen on a bullhorn kept asking a man named "Michael" to come out of a home on Chickasaw Avenue.

Police arrested Michael Madison, 35.

Earlier Friday, East Cleveland detectives found a decomposing body inside a garage on Shaw and Hayden avenues.

Related story: East Cleveland: Body found in garage

Police used warrants to search the garage and the apartment across the alley, both of which are rented by Madison.

A car which he had access to was also towed from the scene.

A bystander at Sunday's search scene who knew Michael Madison says he knew him as Ivan Carter. Police haven't confirmed whether or not Madison has any known aliases.

The same bystander also says it seems as if Madison always "had something on his mind," but appeared to still be a normal guy.

The FBI, BCI and Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office is also assisting East Cleveland Police with the investigation.

It's possible that Madison may face criminal charges as early as Monday morning.

Tornado causes damage in Pepper Pike area

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

PEPPER PIKE -- Neighbors who woke up this morning in Pepper Pike began counting the signs of damage to yards and homes.

On several streets near Lander Road, trees are split or bent in the direction the wind blew.

The National Weather Service confirms a high-end EF1 tornado, up to 200 yards wide, blew a path 1.3 miles from Ursuline College to residential streets.

The college was hardest hit. The gymnasium wall was ripped off in the 110 mph winds.

The science center and college library were damaged, too.

About four or five people were on campus at the time. On Friday afternoon, the college was full of summer campers earlier in the day.

"Nobody was injured. Nobody was hurt. We feel great blessings for that. God was looking out for us," said Sister Diana Stano, President of Ursuline College.

Much of the lush landscaping and age-old trees surrounding the pond on the campus were destroyed in the tornado's path.

"I've been president for 17 years and I've never seen damage like this," Sister Diana said.

Less than a mile away, neighbors on Plymouth Road spent the day counting blessings, too.

Large trees in Lorie Hollington Smith and Katie Outcalt's yards are littered about like twigs.

The first hole of The Country Club is covered in debris as well. Some power lines on Plymouth were brought down in the storm, but no one in the area was injured.

"A lot of really close calls," said Hollington Smith.

The winds sent one branch straight through the dining room wall of Lorie's home. Both women said, another five feet over, and the trees could have landed on bedrooms where parents and children were sleeping.

On Saturday, neighbors found what appeared to be pieces of insulation from Ursuline buildings in their yards.

"I think it picked up a prayer at Ursuline and put a bubble over our houses, because if you look how close these huge trees are to our homes. It's a miracle," said Outcalt.

CLEVELAND -- It has been five years in the making.

The 2013 National Senior Games arrive in Cleveland this weekend with 30,000 people expected in town throughout a two-week period.

GUIDE | 2013 National Senior Games in Cleveland

Meredith Scerba with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission says this is a great opportunity to showcase all Cleveland has to offer.

Scerba, speaking with WKYC's Erin Kennedy on "Channel 3 News Today" early Friday morning, says it is going to be a fun experience.

"There is nothing more inspiring to watch than these athletes. I've seen a 92-year-old man do a pole vault, a 72-year-old running a six-minute mile."

Cleveland: Athletes prepare for Senior Games

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- More than 11,000 athletes -- a larger number than those in the Olympics -- are expected to descend upon Cleveland for the 2013 National Senior Games.

WKYC's Joe Cronauer has the story of two athletes ready to compete.

The first is 65-year-old Jeannie Rice, who has run 89 marathons all over the world. Rice, who will be running in the Senior Games, plans to complete her 100th marathon at some point next year.

GUIDE | 2013 National Senior Games in Cleveland

Then there's 67-year-old Bill Cloninger who is competing as a bicyclist.

"There's a sensation of speed," he says. "Yes, I breather hard if I'm working hard, but at the same time, I'm flying. It's just a lot of fun."

Cloninger is looking forward to his time in the Senior Games.

"The best athletes in their mature years in the country, these people, most of them, have been competing their whole lives. I mean, they're the real deal. I'm an interloper. I've been competing now for two years."

Three years ago, Cloninger couldn't walk a mile without getting winded.

"At that point, I was a rather fat man," he says. "I weighed 245 pounds."

A turning point came in 2010 when co-workers asked him to take part in the Cleveland triathlon -- he would be the bike leg.

"It caused me to get the bike out, get it going and riding again."

Cloninger hasn't stopped since. He upped his training and pounds started to fall. Throughout a three-year span, he lost a total of 100 pounds.

"One thing you have to understand about weighing 100 pounds more, that weight is a burden," he says.

By shedding the heft and hindrance, he gained a renewed outlook on life.

"It's a great adventure. Every day is new, bright and shiny. It's absolutely wonderful."

GUIDE | Staying safe in extreme heat

It's also suggested to avoid any unnecessary activity during the main heat of the day.

Landowners: Fracking created toxic damage to land, water

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Who is monitoring oil and gas wells in Ohio?

It's supposed to be the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, but some landowners are unhappy with the ODNR's responsiveness when land or water gets contaminated through fracking.

The improper dumping of fracking waste is poisoning land and water in Ohio, and some property owners believe the state isn't doing nearly enough to crack down on those who are responsible for it.

Harry Boyd, a former Akron resident, is one such landowner. He wanted a peaceful retreat and so he bought 110 acres in southeastern Ohio.

There were wells on the land and he was approached to lease a couple of them out. He chose to do so with a company called Appalachian Energy Resources, which is owned by Phil Billick, of Brecksville.

Boyd would go on to accuse Billick of violating an agreement that Billick wouldn't dump contaminated water on his land. Billick blamed the dumping on a sub-contractor whom he later fired.

But records show that Boyd's own wells on the same property were also slapped with state violations.

When Boyd points to spots on his land where nothing will grow, he blames Billick for the mess.

An inspector from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources saw the mess too, and issued four notices of violation.

Billick, who declined an on-camera interview, corrected the violations. But Boyd, who is now being sued by Billick for breach of contract, says the damage has been done.

He says that when he picks up a chunk of earth, "It smells just like oil."

Shawn Seitz, of Brunswick, bought 100 acres for recreation just down the road from Harry Boyd, also in Monroe County. He knew it had an oil well on it.

That well was owned by a man named Edmund Byers, and Byers assured Seitz that it was operated legally.

After Seitz ended up with a rash after working on the land, he was concerned enough to call ODNR.

"They came out and said the well was run illegally, 100 percent," says Seitz.

State inspectors took water samples from Seitz's land and found toxins that indicate brine, or frack water, which contained chloride.

While a normal glass of drinking water has 250 milligrams of chloride, water from Seitz's stream had 86,000 milligrams.

Yet there was no stiff fine or any penalty at all -- ODNR simply fired off some notices of violations.

Byers declined comment.

During all of last year, the state issued 250 notices of violations for fracking contamination, pollution and leaking.

By far the worst case happened in Youngstown.

Gas driller Benedict Lupo was charged in February with dumping more than 20,000 gallons of fracking waste into the Mahoning River.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says charges were brought under federal law for a very good reason.

"It's a misdemeanor under Ohio law," he said. "It should be a felony."

Ohio property owners complain the state often doesn't use even its limited power to crack down on dumping.

And the man who oversees oil and gas drilling for the state, Rick Simmers of the ODNR, says he's too busy to talk about it.

Homeowners, however, are paying the price, and some of them are talking.

As Shawn Seitz puts it, "I don't have enough money in my wallet to clean up what they did."

This isn't just happening in the backwoods of Ohio, but in communities like North Royalton, Mayfield Heights and Broadview Heights.

The latter city -- which is only 13 square miles -- is now studded with 90 wells. Many of them are located within a few hundred feet of people's homes.

Akron, Cleveland families search for missing loved ones

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Families with missing loved ones continue to do all they can to keep their faces in the public eye.

On Wednesday a rally was held for 18-year-old Shirellda Terry who went missing a week ago on Cleveland's east side.

"Please just have a heart... I want you to treat it as if it was your daughter, if it were your child, if it were your grandchild, everyone is attached and connected to a family," pleaded Belinda Minor, Shirellda's mother.

With voices and signs raised, Shirellda's family and friends marched along St. Clair Avenue near East 147th Street, demanding people pay attention.

"I know somebody saw something and I'm asking that people will just be bold and be brave enough to really help me find my daughter," said Minor.

Meanwhile the family of missing Akron teen Taylor Robinson worries people are already starting to forget.

"It's not just Taylor. Somebody is out here taking out children," said Taylor's stepfather Jeff Rucker.

"I have not heard my child's voice, I haven't seen her face, I haven't been able to tell her I love her," cried her mother Carmilla Robinson.

Taylor went missing more than two months ago from a home on Kipling Street where she worked as a home health aide.

Her family has held rallies, searches, even prayer vigils to keep her name in the news.

"You can't understand how lonely it feels... you feel like you're doing all this stuff by yourself," said Rucker.

Another door-to-door search for Shirellda Terry will kick off Thursday at 5 p.m. near East 147th and St. Clair.

Both Shirellda and Taylor's families are offering a reward for tips that lead to the girl's safe return.

CLEVELAND -- Ariel Castro faces a new indictment on just short of 1,000 charges Wednesday morning in the disappearance cases of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

He was indicted on similar charges in June. He is expected to plead not guilty to hundreds of new charges, just like he did last time.

PHOTOS | Ariel Castro in court

If convicted, Castro faces prison time in excess of 21,000 years.

Castro faces charges that include kidnapping, and repeated rape against Berry, DeJesus and Knight, while holding them captive for a decade in his Seymour Avenue home.

The latest 977-count indictment includes 446 counts of rape and aggravated murder charges for allegations of causing the death of Knight's unborn child.

The indictment also reveals new allegations that Castro raped one of the women on Christmas day in 2006 -- the same day a girl he fathered with Berry was born.

"It is our hope that we can continue to work toward a resolution that can avoid having an unnecessary trial," said Craig Weintraub, Castro's Attorney, at Castro's June arraignment.

Legal experts say the new charges come as no surprise.

County Prosecutor Tim McGinty wants to sent a clear message by making a charge for every day and every act that carry a maximim sentence that would take hundreds of lifetimes to serve in full.

It remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek a controversial death penalty punishment.

WKYC will carry live coverage of Castro's indictment on air and online Wednesday morning.

Juror offers emotional explanation of Zimmerman verdict

When the six jury members in the George Zimmerman trial went in for deliberation, three were for acquittal, one was for second-degree murder and two were for the manslaughter charge, one of those jury members told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Monday.

As they reviewed the evidence, the jurors came to feel that Zimmerman truly feared for his life when he pulled the trigger, she said.

The juror's identity was not revealed but was identified by her juror number, "B-37," on Anderson Cooper 360°.

She said that she wanted to remain "cautious" and didn't want her face shown. Earlier Monday, literary agent Sharlene Martin said she had signed one of the Zimmerman jurors to write a book about her experience on the panel, and also identified that juror as B-37, which was the juror's official court designation during the trial.

That juror said Zimmerman was "a man whose heart was in the right place," but he went too far and did not use good judgment.

Zimmerman, 29, a neighborhood watch volunteer in a gated townhouse community, shot and killed Trayvon Martin, 17, on Feb. 26, 2012.

Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, claimed he shot the unarmed African-American teenager in self-defense.

That juror said she didn't think the shooting was racially motivated and that Zimmerman would have reacted the same way to someone of any race.

While her identity wasn't revealed, there are some known facts about juror B-37. She is a middle-aged white woman and the daughter of an Air Force captain. She has been married to a space attorney for 20 years and has has two adult children.

She and the other five members deliberated for more than 15 hours before finding Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter Saturday.

She added that Zimmerman did have the right to carry his pistol, but he should have stayed in his car that night and not have gotten out to follow Trayvon.

She did think that Zimmerman did have the right to own a pistol.

"I think he has every right to carry a gun," she said. "I think it's everyone's right to carry a gun" as long as they use it responsibly.

The juror said that she thinks it was Trayvon threw the first punch in the subsequent physical altercation that night and that she believed Zimmerman's account of what happened that night.

"I think George was pretty consistent and told the truth basically," she said.

She said that both sets of parents likely believe that it was their child calling for help on the 911 tape. "They are your kids you want to believe they are innocent," she said.

As for the juror herself, she was "sure" that it was Zimmerman calling for help.

She said that the laws they had to consider were "very confusing" so they took their time to think through it all carefully. Then, after they gave the bailiff their decision, they cried.

"It was just hard thinking that someone had lost their life and nothing else could be done about it," she said. "It's a tragedy that this happened."

BEREA, Ohio -- The commission overseeing the Ohio Turnpike is considering a proposal to raise tolls by 2.7 percent beginning Jan. 1.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/11Q3ysz) reports that the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission meets Monday, when it is also is expected to authorize $1 billion in bonds that those higher tolls will help pay for.

Rallies, marches follow Zimmerman not guilty verdict

NEW YORK -- Demonstrators from across the country are protesting a jury's decision to clear George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of an unarmed black teenager while the Justice Department considers whether to file criminal civil rights charges.

Rallies on Sunday attracted anywhere from a few dozen people to more than a thousand as demonstrators voiced their support for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's family -- and decried Zimmerman's not guilty verdict as a miscarriage of justice.

The NAACP and protesters are calling for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted Saturday in Martin's death.

The Justice Department says it is looking into the case to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case.
