Ohio man raises money for kids after parents killed

Written by
Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- An Ohio man is raising money to help four kids he'll probably never meet.

Sometimes we just feel called upon to act. That moment came last week for Brian Morris of Springboro.

He was reading a couple different news stories and one hit him on Christmas Eve: Parents die, four children orphaned.

Last Sunday, a wrong way driver crashed into a van on Interstate 75 in Warren County. Killed instantly were Joshua Nkansah, his 7-year-old son David, and 31-year-old Michele Barhorst, who was in the minivan with her family. Her husband, 37-year-old Scott Barhorst, died later at a hospital. The couple's 9-year-old daughter was the most seriously hurt of their children, but she survived.

The family was on the way to visit relatives for Christmas.

Morris knew he had to do something. "I decided to do this because I have two daughters of my own. I can only imagine, if something were to happen to me, I can only hope that someone would help me out the way I'm trying to help these kids out."

With the help of a friend, he set up a We Pay account online to collect donations for the children. The secure site allows you to see the donations made and by whom.

"What I want people to do is to reach into their heart and forget that five dollars they spend on something pointless and donate 5, 10, 15, however much they can to this cause to try and help these kids out. Because I really want to help them create new memories, do great things."

In just two days the account has raised nearly five thousand dollars, but Morris says it's about more than the money.

"I've never met them, I probably never will meet them. And what it comes down to is it doesn't matter, because if you're helping each other out, that's what we're all here to do. And that's exactly what I want to do in this situation."

Report: Browns expected to fire head coach and GM

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 | 21.08

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

Pittsburgh -- The Browns are expected to fire Head Coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert after Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.  Voice of the Browns Jim Donovan reports from Pittsburgh that the players meeting for Monday afternoon has been moved up to Monday morning, causing speculation that the Browns new ownership group is ready to make the changes come Monday.

Shurmur has spent two seasons with the Browns.  He has a record of 9-22, including a mark of 2-9 against divisional opponents.  Shurmur also admitted this week during his news conference that the team has not won enough games during his stay here in Cleveland.

Jim Donovan reports a strong candidate to replace Shurmur is Indianapolis Colts Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians.  Arians has guided the Colts offense and rookie quarterback Andrew Luck into the playoffs.  He was also offensive coordinator with the Browns during the Butch Davis era.

Jimmy also says another candidate is Arizona Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton.  Horton has been an NFL assistant coach for 18 years including a stop with the Steelers during 2004-2010.

Flying high: Akron-Canton airport breaks record

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 29 Desember 2012 | 21.08

NORTH CANTON -- The deals are always flying by at Akron Canton Airport. Now more than ever, people are taking notice.

For the past three years, they've continued to break their own records on the amount of customers serviced.  Business is up 11 percent from last year.

Cleveland native Jennifer Johnson flies CAK.

"It's smaller but you can get through everything a lot quicker than Cleveland Hopkins," said Johnson. "Once AirTran started docking its station ,that's when I started going."

Turns out, a lot of people are getting to where they want to go from Akron Canton.

The 11 percent increase in traffic is greatly attributed to their low fares.

"Our average fare is $100 less than Hopkins, maybe $40 to $50 less than from Pittsburgh or Columbus," said VP of Marketing Kristie VanAuken.

For passenger Bradley Lemmon, it's all about convenience.

"This is closer, shorter drive... we walked all the way in, checked our bags ready for our flight," said Lemmon.

This year, about 1.8 million customers have flown in and out. Their traffic alone has sustained and created jobs throughout the hub.

For instance, Southwest Airlines "jumped from about 40 employees to 75, so nearly a 100 percent increase for people for Southwest Airlines here," VanAuken said.

Cleveland Weather: Snow moving in

A storm system passing to our south this morning is producing snow showers, light to moderate, across our area this morning.

We will likely see anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of snow across the area from this storm, with the heaviest snow south. It will be make for some slick and slippery road conditions at times.

A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh for Tuscarawas and Carroll counties.

There are currently no advisories for the rest of northern Ohio, which is covered by the NWS office in Cleveland because in order to meet the criteria for a winter weather advisory, 4" of snow needs to fall in 12 hours ... we'll be just below that.

The snow will taper off in the early afternoon, but then lake effect sets up for the snowbelts. Another 2" to 4" is possible overnight Saturday into Sunday (heaviest accumulations will happen if we can get some bands set up).

Scattered snow, courtesy of the Lake, will continue into early Sunday before dissipating.  Otherwise Sunday looks lovely ... good day to visit the local ski slopes, toboggan shoots, cross-country skiing trails and the car wash!

The last day of 2012 (Monday) starts off fine and dandy, but later in the day snow will develop.  That snow is expected to stay with us for the start of 2013.

Much colder air will be coming our way next week.

Saturday: Cloudy with snow showers likely.  1" to 4" for the entire area.  Low 30s (additional lake effect snow Saturday night in the belts)

Sunday: Flurries linger east, otherwise partly sunny. Near 30

Monday: Partly sunny. Snow showers develop late.  Low 30s

New Year's Day: Cloudy with snow showers likely. Upper 20s

Wednesday: Partly sunny. Mid/upper 20s

Thursday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Cold and windy. Mid 20s

Friday:  Very cold with a chance for lake effect snow showers east.  Highs only near 20!

Enjoy your morning.

Saturday: Cloudy with snow showers likely.  A couple inches of snow are possible. Low 30s (lake effect snow Saturday night in the belts)

ODOT prepared for first major winter storm

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 26 Desember 2012 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- The Ohio Department of Transportation pretreated the major freeways and roadways as early as 11 p.m. Tuesday.

ODOT plans on having 80 trucks on the roadways for every shift, with shifts continuing through Thursday morning.

Cuyahoga County - Tonight at 11 p.m. a crew of 53 snowplows will hit the road.

Lake County - Wednesday at 4 a.m. a crew of 13 snowplows will hit the road.

Geauga County - Wednesday at 4 a.m. a crew of 14 snowplows will hit the road.

The pretreating consists of salt and brine that will help when the snow starts to fall in earnest.

WKYC's Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling says a blizzard warning is posted for most of the Channel 3 viewing area in the northern counties and a Winter Storm Warning for the other counties in the viewing area,

Snow will move south to north through Wednesday morning into midday with very heavy snow falling in the afternoon and evening.

The snow will affect Sandusky to Mansfield, Cleveland to Millersburg, Ashtabula to Akron, and Canton to Dover to Youngstown and all points in between.

Winds will pick up and accumulations will be 8" to 12," with the heaviest possible along the Interstate 71 corridor.

This is not lake-effect snowfall and will be widespread snow for all of Northern Ohio.

Cleveland Weather: Wicked Wednesday

Merry Christmas!

A BLIZZARD WARNING has been issued for:  Lakeshore Ashtabula, Lake, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Ottawa counties from 11AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.  (Blizzard warning criteria are: wind greater than 35mph and visibility less than 1/4 mile for 3 or more hours.)

A WINTER STORM WARNING goes into effect for the rest of northern Ohio from 7AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.

PLEASE - Don't get caught up in the technicalities of a blizzard warning versus a winter storm warning. ALL of northern Ohio will have a nasty day Wednesday.  The wind will be a little higher in the blizzard warning areas and visibilities may be consistently lower, but we will have very tough driving conditions across all of our counties.

Here is the set-up:  A powerful winter storm system will move from the deep south to the New England/Mid-Atlantic coast.  As the storm moves northeast, a swath of very heavy snow will move into northern Ohio from the south.  It will also be quite windy.

The snow will start across northern Ohio by midday Wednesday.  A steady moderate to heavy snow will persist through the afternoon with very heavy, steady snow continuing in the late afternoon through evening.

When combined with the brisk wind, blizzard conditions are possible in all areas, but most likely in the blizzard warning area.

6" to 10" of snow will fall across ALL of northern Ohio through the day and evening.  An additional 2" to 5" will fall Wednesday night before the snow cuts down to light showers and flurries early Thursday morning.

Storm totals by midday Thursday will be 8" to 12" with the possibility of up to 15" of snow.

This will be a constantly evolving situation.

Things to remember:

- The snow will be wet and heavy, so use caution if shoveling.

- Driving will be extremely difficult.

-If driving south along I-71, expect heavy snow the entire drive through Cincinnati.

-If driving west on I-80/90, expect heavy snow showers in much of northern Ohio...tapering off to flurries and light snow in Indiana and Michigan.

-If driving south on I-77 or east on I-80/76, expect snow to change over to a wintry mix.

-If driving east on I-90 toward Buffalo, expect snow, but leaving earlier rather than later is a good idea.

- The airports will have problems with arrivals and departures.  So will other regional airports in Columbus and Pittsburgh.

-Bring in the pets and secure outdoor buildings and items.

-Consider telling your kids to wear bike helmets while sledding, tubing and/or skiing or snowboarding.

Here is a look at the rest of the forecast:

Thursday:  Scattered light snow showers.  Breezy.  Near 30

Friday:  Partly sunny.  Near 30

Saturday:  Mostly cloudy with snow likely.  Low 30s

Sunday:  Early snow showers linger, then partly cloudy.  Near 30

Monday:  Partly cloudy early, then scattered snow later.  Upper 30s

New Year's Day:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers.  Upper 20s

Snow, ice in Illinois and Indiana as storm moves north

Written by
Associated Press

MOBILE, Ala. -- Snow and ice are covering roads in southern Illinois and southern Indiana, and officials are urging residents to stay home if they can.

State police report a number of slide-off accidents in the Evansville, Ind., area. And there are white-out conditions on Interstate 64.

An enormous storm system that brought snow and sleet to the nation's midsection -- and tornadoes to the Deep South -- is now moving its way toward the Northeast.

A lot of people who traveled for Christmas are having trouble getting back home today. Hundreds of flights have been canceled -- mostly at airports that were in the path of the storm, or will soon be affected by it.

The storm system has been blamed for three deaths and several injuries.

The National Weather Service says 34 tornadoes were reported yesterday in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Geauga County: Dozens of accidents keep deputies busy

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 22 Desember 2012 | 21.08

GEAUGA COUNTY -- The Geauga County Sheriff's Office stayed busy Friday night, as snow pummeled this typical snowbelt county.

"It's everything. People getting stuck. Going too quick. Sliding off into a ditch," said Deputy Jeff Raymond, who is on duty until 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

His patrol car computer glowed with the red and green lights of over 50 accidents Friday evening.

Many of the crashes Raymond attributes to drivers going too fast on hilly, curvy roads, or not having the proper tires to handle the conditions.

On an incline on state Route 87, a semi truck driver says he was forced to hit his brakes when a car in front of him slowed to 5 mph.

Once the semi stopped, he couldn't get it going again. Deputies arrived on the scene to divert traffic, since drivers who tried to pass the semi would have had to travel into an oncoming lane.

Soon ODOT crews arrived to salt the road around the tires of the big rig. Gary, the truck driver, says he appreciated the response from deputies while he waited.

"Kept a bad situation from getting worse," Gary said.

On state Route 422, Amanda Coombs spun into a ditch when a car tried to merge onto the highway and cut her off.

"I've been here for an hour," said Coombs, a Navy sailor on leave from Virginia Beach.

Deputy Raymond arrived and set up flashing lights around her car until a tow vehicle could get there.

"I'm glad (Raymond) did, and that I had someone to check and make sure I was okay. The weather is just horrible out here," Coombs said.

Public workers are here to help, but want to remind people to take it slow, and leave early. These are dangerous conditions for recklessness.

NEW YORK -- The New York Stock Exchange is being sold to a rival exchange for about $8 billion, ending more than two centuries of independence for the iconic Big Board.

IntercontinentalExchange Inc., an upstart exchange based in Atlanta, said Thursday that NYSE Euronext Inc. shareholders can chose to receive either $33.12 in cash, .2581 IntercontinentalExchange Inc. shares, or a combination of $11.27 in cash plus .1703 shares of stock.

The deal has been approved by the boards of both companies, but would have to be approved by regulators.

Last year, IntercontinentalExchange and Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. made a failed $11 billion bid to buy NYSE Euronext.

Earlier this year, European regulators blocked Deutsche Boerse AG from buying NYSE Euronext.

Police are looking for a suspect who may be driving a dark blue Chevy minivan, model year late 1990s or early 2000s.

The van didn't have hubcaps.

The suspect was wearing glasses and was last seen traveling on Warner Road.

Police searched the Warner Road area and wanted to see if businesses had surveillance video.

Connecticut dad recalls loving, creative 6-year-old

NEWTOWN, Conn.  -- The father of a 6-year-old girl killed in the Connecticut elementary school massacre says his deep pain is comforted by the memory of how bright, loving and creative his daughter was.

Robbie Parker says his daughter Emilie was artistic and was always quick to draw a picture or make a card for friends. He says the world is a better place because Emilie was in it.

Parker was among the first parents to speak about the loss of one of the 20 children who died in Friday's shootings in Newtown. He struggled to collect his breath at first, much less to speak. He says he's not mad and expressed sympathy for the shooter's family.

Parker says, "She was beautiful. She was blond. She was always smiling."

Connecticut school shooting: Details emerge about alleged gunman

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 15 Desember 2012 | 21.08

Written by
Associated Press

Family and friends remember Adam Lanza as many things - intelligent, nerdy, goth, remote, thin.

Now the world will always remember him as a mass murderer. The 20-year-old man is believed to have killed his mother, gunned down more than two dozen people, 20 of them children, at a Connecticut grade school and committed suicide.

He might have suffered from a personality disorder, law enforcement officials said.

So far, authorities have not spoken publicly of any possible motive. They found no note or manifesto, and Lanza had no criminal history. Witnesses said the shooter didn't utter a word.

Adam Lanza attended Newtown High School, and news clippings from recent years show him on the honor roll. Joshua Milas, a classmate who was in the technology club with Lanza, said that he was generally a happy person but that he hadn't seen him in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid. He was smart," said Milas, who graduated in 2009. "He was probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius."

The tech club held "LAN parties" - short for local area network - in which students would gather at a member's home, hook up their computers into a small network and play games. Gloria Milas, Joshua's mother, hosted one of the parties once.

She recalled a school meeting in 2008 organized by the gunman's mother to try to save the job of the club's adviser. At the meeting, Milas said, Adam Lanza's brother Ryan said a few words in support of the adviser, who he said had taken his brother under his wing.

"My brother has always been a nerd," Ryan Lanza said then, according to Milas. "He still wears a pocket protector."

Catherine Urso, who attended a vigil Friday evening in Newtown, Conn., said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style.

"He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," referring to a style of dress noted for a heavily black wardrobe.

Authorities say Adam Lanza shot his mother at their home before driving her car to Sandy Hook Elementary School and - armed with at least two handguns - carried out the massacre, officials said.

A third weapon, a .223-caliber rifle, was found in the car, and more guns were recovered during the investigation.

Investigators were trying to learn as much as possible about Lanza and questioned his brother, who is not believed to have any involvement in the rampage.

Ryan Lanza, now 24 and living in Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned, a law enforcement official said. He told authorities that his brother was believed to suffer from a personality disorder, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the unfolding investigation.

The official did not elaborate, and it was unclear exactly what type of disorder Adam Lanza might have had.

Ryan Lanza had been cooperative and was not under arrest or in custody, but investigators were still searching his computers and phone records. The brother told law enforcement he had not been in touch with Adam since about 2010.

Adam Lanza and his mother, Nancy, lived in a well-to-do part of Newtown, a prosperous community of 27,000 people about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

Lanza's parents filed for divorce in 2008, according to court records. His father, Peter Lanza, lives in Stamford, Conn., according to public records, and he reportedly works as a tax director for General Electric.

Lanza's aunt Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

If her son had needed counseling, "Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," she said Friday. Marsha Lanza said her husband had seen Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary.

Lanza said she was close with Nancy Lanza and had sent her a Facebook message Friday morning asking how she was doing. Nancy Lanza never responded.

Nancy Lanza's mother was too distraught to speak when reached by phone at her home in Brooksville, Fla.

"I just don't know, and I can't make a comment right now," Dorothy Hanson, 78, said in a shaky voice as she started to cry. She said she hadn't heard anything official about her daughter and grandsons. She declined to comment further and hung up.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said investigators believe Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook school several years ago but appeared to have no recent connection to the place.

At least one parent said Adam Lanza's mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the law enforcement official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was not clear that Adam Lanza had a job, and there was no indication of law enforcement interviews or search warrants at a place of business.

Search for answers in Connecticut school shooting

SANDY HOOK, Conn. -- A day after a small New England town was rocked by unimaginable violence, a community is left shattered, and a nation is left reeling.

On Friday, 20-year-old Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where he shot and killed 20 young children, along with 6 of their teachers and caretakers. Police say Lanza's mother was killed earlier in the day.

Lanza was found dead inside the school of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials scheduled a press conference for Saturday morning. Investigators and the medical examiner said they would work through the night to identify the dead and hoped to release names today.

At church vigils Friday night and gatherings all around Newtown into the wee hours of Saturday morning there was a collective cry of unbelief and grieving and people asking why and how something like this could have happened.

The unsatisfying answer is that nobody knows why Adam Lanza shot his mother and why he then took her guns to the school and murdered 26 others.

Declan Procaccini said Saturday he was bracing himself for the release of the names of those who died.

"It's just something that right now I can't even imagine when they release the names of those children," he told CNN.

He said his daughter was in a reading class with other children and two teachers when the shooting started. They locked themselves in a bathroom until police banged on the door and led them through the school -- and the bloody scene -- to safety.

What happened on Friday "is lunacy," said local resident Shannon Doherty. "It's nuts, it's totally nuts."

The town is so close that he is sure he's going to know the victims. "We're going to know these kids," he said.

He and his wife Tamara aren't sure what to say to their own kids, a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, about the terrible events. "What do you tell them?" he asked.

After receiving word of the shooting, Tracy Hoekenga who was at one vigil she was paralyzed with fear for her two boys, fourth-grader C.J. and second grader Matthew.

"I couldn't breathe. It's indescribable. For a half an hour, 45 minutes, I had no idea if my kids were OK," she said.

The nightmare began on Friday when Adam Lanza drove his mother's car through a 300-year-old town with its fine old churches and towering trees and arrived at a school full of the season's joy. Somehow, he got past a security door to a place where children should have been safe from harm.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teacher Theodore Varga and other fourth-grade instructors were meeting; the glow remained from the previous night's fourth-grade concert.

"It was a lovely day," Varga said. "Everybody was joyful and cheerful. We were ending the week on a high note."

And then, suddenly and unfathomably, gunshots rang out. "I can't even remember how many," he said.

The incident -- among the worst school shootings in U.S. history -- is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's assault by a lone gunman at a Portland, Ore., shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded.

Three weapons were found at the scene in Newtown - a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols, inside the school, and a .223-caliber rifle in the back of a car.

A federal law enforcement official said the guns had been legally bought and registered by the shooter's  mother.

As the Newtown community struggles to cope with the unspeakable violence that claimed 20 of their youngest members, new details about Adam Lanza are beginning to emerge.

Ryan Lanza, the suspect's 24-year-old brother, who was questioned by law enforcement in Hoboken, N.J., on Friday, said Adam was believed to suffer from a personality disorder. He told police that he had not been in touch with his brother since about 2010.

Restaurant owner Mark Tambascio, a family friend, said Nancy Lanza told him recently that her son Adam had Asperger syndrome, that he was "getting out of control and that she might need special help for him."

Adam Lanza's aunt said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it, the Associated Press reported.

Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., told AP she was close with Nancy Lanza, and sent her a message on Facebook on Friday morning asking how she was doing. Nancy Lanza never responded.

Marsha Lanza described Nancy Lanza as a good mother and kind-hearted.

If her son had needed counseling, "Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," she said.

Marsha Lanza said her husband saw Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Investigators are trying to learn as much as possible about Adam Lanza. So far, authorities have not spoken publicly of any possible motive. They found no note or manifesto, and Lanza had no criminal history.

Witnesses told AP that during the shooting, Lanza didn't utter a word.

"This is the most tragic thing we've ever encountered,'' said Newtown Police Lt. George Sinko. "We have to think about the families right now."

Sandy Hook Elementary Principal Dawn Hochsprung is one of the victims who died, said Gerald Stomski, first selectman of Woodbury, Conn. He said police told him Hochsprung died in the attack.

He says she was a principal in Woodbury until a few years ago. He says residents were mourning her death.

Stomski says she had "an extremely likable style."

Hochsprung had been principal at Sandy Hook Elementary since 2010. Hochsprung had frequently tweeted photos from her job and wrote upbeat tweets about what was going on at the school.

More hauntingly, several publications report she wrote a letter before the school year outlining new safety measures including locked doors during school hours.

Hundreds of Newtown resident met Friday night in three different churches to remember the victims, offering hugs, tears and words of kindness to their fellow townspeople.

Hundreds packed the St. Rose of Lima church in Newtown, while hundreds more spilled outside. Some held hands in circles and offered prayers. Others lit candles and sang Silent Night.

On Friday evening, Ray Ruzek, owner of Heaven ice cream shop in Sandy Hook, attached a handwritten sign next to store sign posted outside his business. It said "Come pray 7 pm."

He has hosted a Christian prayer group at the shop on Friday nights since October, but he doesn't usually hang such a sign. But last night was different.

He knew others in the community would need additional support in the wake of a local shooting. And he wanted to make sure that his friends and neighbors knew that his group could be a resource for them.

"Tonight is obviously special to us because of the tragedy," he said.

Massillon: Perry High School 'Remembers Nate'

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 14 Desember 2012 | 21.08

WKYC Web Staff

MASSILLON -- When you walk the hallways at Perry High School in Massillon, there is definitely someone missing.

On Monday, Nate Baker, 14, passed away after a battle with cancer. His closest friends are back at school, learning a cruel lesson about death.

"Fighting so hard for 18 months, he really gave it his all," said Aaron O'Brien.

WKYC's John Anderson met with a group of Nate's closest friends and, in one afternoon, they shared laughs and talked about the good times, like back in kindergarten.

"I remember the first time I met him was in baseball, and he asked if he could borrow my glove and we got into a fight over it, and we could laugh about it now," said Austin Temsey.

"We talked about Nate's illness, something he didn't talk about," said Alex Tolin.

"He was always up and he never wanted you to know that he was sick. He always wanted you to know he was normal Nate, that nothing was wrong," said Austin Temsey.

And they shared tears.

Austin Sandershawkins has known Nate since the third grade, and remembers a special trip they took to South Carolina two months ago.

Austin said they talked about girls, video games, and just had a blast.

Because his illness took over, Nate never started the 9th grade at Perry High School.

But the school is holding his funeral services Saturday morning in the school's gym.

His friends say that is the proper place for them to say goodbye.

Investigator: City officer lives with career criminal

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 12 Desember 2012 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- A city corrections officer is living with a career criminal who's currently on probation after being accused of shooting at a mother and her son, then threatening to kill a police officer, a Channel 3 News undercover investigation found.

Jennifer Korb has been a city corrections officer since 2009, while the man she lives with, Tracy Bunch, has racked up 20 convictions that include grand theft, drug trafficking and aggravated assault, according to court records.

In all, Bunch has spent more than five years in state prison as a result of his crimes.

Bunch denied the two are dating or living together, despite the fact that the address listed in court records matches Korb's Warrensville Heights home, as well as undercover video shot by the station that shows the two walking arm in arm while shopping.

Korb refused to comment, telling the Investigator Tom Meyer, "Do you think you should be here bothering a hard-working city worker that has put in her full eight hours today?"

Under most correctional facility policies, a guard is prohibited from living with or fraternizing with someone involved in the justice system, said Cuyahoga County Sheriff Bob Reid.

In Cuyahoga County, ex-offenders have to be out of the system for a year before county officers can get involved them. State prisons have similar provisions.

Policies against unauthorized relationships protect the integrity of officers, who might bring contraband into the facility or pass notes to an accomplice on behalf of the offender.

"It's common sense driven and it's just a bad, bad idea," Reid said. "You're held to a higher standard (as a corrections officer) and the standard is of character and honest."

No such policy exists at the Cleveland House of Corrections, where Public Safety Director Marty Flask said that "people are held accountable for their actions, not their relationships."

"If an employee, however, engages in inappropriate or illegal activity with an arrested suspect or inmate, that employee will be held accountable," Flask said, in an email.

The relationship between Korb and Bunch goes back at least a year to November 2011, Channel 3 News found. That's when Bunch is quoted in a police report as threatening a woman by telling her, "I'm (expletive) with the police now and she's gonna (expletive) you up, too."

He invoked his relationship with Korb a second time this March while threatening the same woman, police files indicate.

Bunch has used his relationship with Korb to avoid prison time after pleading guilty to a felony gun charge and misdemeanor aggravated felony for the July shooting.

The shooting occurred on East 144th Street when Bunch mistakenly thought a 21-year-old man was badmouthing him, according to the man's mother.

Bunch came out of a house and fired four to five times at the man and his mother, who tried to hide behind a tree to avoid being shot, she said.

Bunch continued to threaten the two as he was being placed in a police cruiser, according to a police report. Then, on the way to the station, Bunch told the arresting officer that his "life is on the line now. When I get out, someone is gonna die."

But during the sentencing hearing last month, Bunch apologized to the judge for his actions and said it was the result of substance abuse.

Bunch said he was getting treatment at a rehabilitation center and living in a supportive environment with Korb.

Korb stood up during the hearing and acknowledged that Bunch was living with her. She did not say anything, nor was she identified as a city corrections officer.

In the end, the judge sentenced Bunch to two years on probation. If he violates the terms of probation, Bunch will be sentenced to 6 months in the House of Corrections where Korb works.

With more than 25,000 arrests in Cleveland each year, Flask said it is inevitable that a police officer, guard or prosecutor will have a relationship with an offender.

The city does have rules in place that prohibit illegal or inappropriate activity, including conduct that diminishes the esteem of the House of Corrections, Flask said, and "violation of the law or those policies will result in sanctions."

Best and worst store price match policies

Written by
Associated Press

CLEVELAND - First off, if you're still searching for that perfect holiday present, I'm expecting the top pre-Christmas deal drop of the season tomorrow. I'll be flagging the biggest and best deals right here.

When it comes to all your other shopping, I wanted to flag my stores with the easiest and more difficult price match policies this holiday season.

The Good List:

1. Sears
Why? Sears will match any price out there. They'll price-match any retail store or website, which is rare to see. They'll even take shipping and handling charges into account with that. Just print the ordering page from the competitor, including shipping and handling and bring it to your Sears store within 14 days of your purchase. Sears will pay you the difference with proof of price match. If you are shopping on the Sears website, just use their price-matching form.

2. Nordstrom
Why? Nordstrom will meet a competitor's pricing if you EVER find that same item at a lower price from a similar retailer. There are some designer product lines where that doesn't apply, but the non-specified time limit makes this a very generous policy. This does not apply to website or auction pricing.

3. Staples
Why? They'll match any lower price at Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Office Depot, Office Max, Quill, Medical Arts Press, Reliable, Sam's Club, Walmart, WB Mason, or Xerox. They take the price-match a step further and will pay you the difference between the price of their item and the lower price within 14 days of your Staples purchase.

The Naughty/Complicated List:

1. Walmart

Why? Walmart does not price match against ads with percentages off, they don't honor ads for websites or online pricing and they don't honor closeout prices (which is understandable), but there are too many limitations for my personal liking.

I love that you're not required to bring an advertisement in and that the Walmart will match your claim at the cash register, but like their complex returns policy (which varies greatly by department), I wish this was more simplified.

2. Best Buy
Best Buy will also only match prices from local competitors that are within 25 miles of your local Best Buy store or billing address. That isn't helpful if you find a store with a cheaper price farther away. They also do not match the prices of internet-only retailers.

3. Amazon
The nice thing is that Amazon often has one of the lowest prices. They have an excellent 14 day price match policy on televisions but it does not extend to the rest of their store.  They won't price-match against other stores and offer no price-matchprotection whatsoever for the items they sell from third parties or within the Amazon Marketplace.

Up for Debate:

Daily Deal sites like my personal favorite JustDeals.com don't price match and don't accept returns unless an item is defective - but you are guaranteed to lock in the absolute lowest price in the country. Knowing I have the lowest price is another reason I favor daily deal sites.

As always, if you're looking for more big daily deals, please follow me on Twitter. CLICK HERE.

CLEVELAND - It's that time of the year for delivering your holiday cheer on a dime... if you use the right coupon code. Thankfully, in the last 24 hours, a discount code popped up to lower your costs dramatically at one of my favorite stores.

From personalized cards starting at 69¢ with free stamps, shipping and delivery, you won't go wrong today. I had a chance to make several cards uploading photos from my computer in minutes. Customer service at "The Card Store" was impressive in all my test, and the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee didn't hurt either.

Please keep in mind that this deal I found expires at 11:59pm today! I don't expect a deal as good as this with free shipping to return in time for Christmas delivery.

If you're looking for more deals, please feel free to follow me on Twitter.
