Consumer Minute: Target shoppers 'targeted' by phony texts

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 30 November 2012 | 21.08

Millions of people shopped at Target over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Shortly after many of them got a text message telling them they won a Target gift card. The text says: "Your entry last month has won. Go to Targetwinner.com, enter a code and claim your free $1000 gift card. The website it directs you to has the Target logo and looks like a legitimate website. But as you can guess, it's a scheme. It only asks for your birthday and name but with that information alone, hackers can find more information about you. No one seems to know where this text is coming from, but if you get one on your cell phone, do not click on the link and do not enter any information.

Consumer Reports ranked the country's wireless providers, and found cell phone companies still have their work cut out for them when it comes to customer satisfaction. None of the big four national carriers had an overall satisfaction score above 72%. Of the four main companies, Verizon Wireless ranked #1 with the best service, followed by Sprint, T-Mobile and then AT&T. Consumer Reports says cell phone companies remain among the lowest-rated service providers it evaluates.

More than 20,000 Sportspower Trampolines are being recalled due to an injury hazard. The trampoline's metal legs can move out of position and puncture the jumping area, posing a risk to anyone on the trampoline. The recall involves Sportspower Parkside model TR-14FT-COM trampolines, sold exclusively at Sports Authority since 2007. Consumers should stop using the trampoline and contact Sportspower to receive a free repair kit at 888-965-0565

Independence: County launches college savings program

INDEPENDENCE-- It's not the amount of money but the thought behind it and the statement it makes about educational possibilities.

That's what Cuyahoga County Ed FitzGerald's saying about a program he's announcing Friday to give every new kindergartner $100 in a college savings account.

"With the launch of the Cuyahoga County Savings Account Program, every child in our area will grow up knowing that college is a real and attainable goal...This is a critical investment in our children," he said.

FitzGerald believes the universal program is more valuable than offering a fixed number of full scholarships.

Research shows for the first time, students today are less likely to graduate from college than their parents. Less than one of every ten low-income students completes college by their mid 20s.

The city of San Francisco started a similar program donating $50 per child two years ago.

Studies show students with savings accounts are four times more likely to go to college than those who don't have them, and six times more likely if the account's in their name.

Andrea Levere, president of the Corporation for Enterprise Development says, "Cuyahoga County is positioning itself as a national leader in the rapidly growing field of asset building for children."

The program starts next fall. The money can be used for any post high school education including vocational classes and community colleges and universities.

The county is considering more deposits at educational milestones, such as graduating from elementary or middle school.

With administrative costs, the total annual expense is estimated to be between $2 million and $3 million.

Cuyahoga County's program will cover both public and private school kindergartners.

Education is one of the charter-mandated agenda items for the new Cuyahoga County government.

2 tickets strike gold in record Powerball jackpot

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 29 November 2012 | 21.08

Written by
Associated Press

CHICAGO  --  The richest Powerball jackpot ever - and the second-largest top prize in U.S. lottery history - has been won. The question now becomes: Who are the lucky winners waking up to new lives as multimillionaires?

Powerball officials said early Thursday that tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri matched all six numbers to win the record $579.9 million jackpot.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.

It was not clear whether the winning tickets belonged to individuals or groups. Arizona lottery officials said early Thursday morning they had no information on that state's winner or winners but would announce where it was sold during a news conference later in the day. Lottery officials in Missouri did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Bond set at $2 million for mother in son's death

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND --  The mother charged in the death of her 3-year-old son faced a judge in court this morning.

Judge Pinkey Carr set bond at $2 million for Camilia Terry.

The 20-year-old is charged with aggravated murder in the death of her child, Emilliano.

During the brief arraigment which lasted only a few minutes, prosecutors gave more details on the injuries suffered by Emilliano.  They described the child as having blunt force trauma to the  head and a skull fracture.  The proseuctor estimated the child had been dead five to seven days when his body was recovered at a trash facility on Monday night.

Terry said little during the court appearance, except to answer a question from the judge, and looked down for much of the arraignment.

Judge Carr also ordered Terry to have no contact with her other children.

Terry initially told police Emilliano went missing from a Cleveland park on Sunday evening. However, the search soon led to a trash processing facility near Cleveland and turned up the remains of the child wrapped inside multiple trash bags.

Police have tentatively identified the remains as those of Emilliano but the medical examiner is still conducting DNA tests due to the decomposition of the body.  The tests are expected to be completed later this week.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for December 6.

Lottery winners not always as lucky in personal lives

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 28 November 2012 | 21.08

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND -- The $500 million jackpot has a lot of people dreaming, but the story of some lottery winners warn to be careful what you wish for.

Some winners' stories are good examples that money can't buy happiness, and the experts agree.

"I think Henry Ford said money doesn't change a person, it simply unmasks them," said Michael Boone, president of MWBoone & Associates.

They say money doesn't make the man. And some Lotto winners agree. Only about half of lottery winners are happier three years after hitting big, according to Michael Boone, whose Seattle firm advises big lotto winners.

So people have an opportunity to do all the things they dreamed about, sometimes those are good things and sometimes not," Boone said.

Around Christmas of 2002, Jack Whittaker, of West Virginia, had the only winning ticket i the $314 million lottery jackpot.

Two years later, his wife said that she wishes she had torn up the ticket. Their lives were in shambles.

Their 17-year-old granddaughter died after struggling with drug addiction. Whittaker himself was arrested twice for drunken driving.

Abraham Shakespeare, of Florida, was murdered after winning $31 million.

Then there's Amanda Clayton, a young mother who won $1 million in the Michigan lottery. She made headlines when she continued to collect food stamps.

She was found dead of an apparent drug overdose.

Are these winners unlucky or is there something more to it?

Psychologist Alduan Tartt says big payouts can isolate people and thrust them into a world of wealth that is foreign to them.

There's a funny thing about money and happiness that not everyone knows about.

"You win the lottery and spend a lot of money. What happens is, you get used to having a lot of money and spending a lot of money," Tartt says. "So what happens is, you actually have to spend more money to get the same level of happiness."

What about lottery winners who do end up happy?

Their secret, experts say, is that they don't lose their sense of self and they successfully separate their identity from their money.

Police: Missing 3-year-old found dead in trash bag

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 27 November 2012 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- Police say the body of missing 3-year-old Cleveland boy Emiliano Terry was found in trash bags at the Waste Management recycling center in Oakwood.

During a 9:45 p.m. press conference Monday at the Justice Center, police said they have arrested Emiliano's mother, Camilia, and she is being held in jail.

The discovery of Emiliano's body was made about 4 p.m. Monday. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy Tuesday morning to determine the cause of death.

Camilia Terry's other two children are now in the custody of Cuyahoga County Children & Family Services.

Police say they became suspicious of 20-year-old Camilia Terry's statements when they became "inconsistent" earlier Monday.

As the FBI evidence team was searching the streets around Terry's apartment near East 130th Street and Broadway Avenue about 2 p.m. Monday, they noticed a Waste Management truck picking up recycling containers and recyclables.

They contacted Waste Management after getting the number of the truck and asked that the truck be held at the Oakwood facility until they could arrive.

Once they arrived, they had the truck dump its load inside the facility and began searching through the bags. They found the body double-bagged after opening several bags.

Police were asked if they knew when Emiliano had been killed and they said that the Medical Examiner's Office would make the determination Tuesday as to how long Emiliano had been dead.

Police said the investigation is now in the hands of the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit and they will be meeting with the prosecutor's office Tuesday morning to determine the charges against Camilia Terry.

CLEVELAND -- Police and the FBI are actively seeking help from the public in locating a missing 3-year-old boy.

Local reaction to Middle East conflict

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 19 November 2012 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- Tensions between Israel and Palestine continue to escalate.  Sunday marks the fifth straight day that Israeli's and Palestinians have spent launching missiles and rockets in and out of the Gaza Strip.

Case Western Reserve University Political Science Professor Dr. Peter Moore says the violence reached the next level Thursday when Israelis killed a high commanding Hamas leader.

Israeli troops have gotten ready for a possible ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. Dr. Moore says the outcome would be catastrophic. The Gaza Strip itself, he points out, is one of the most densely populated places on earth.

The majority of the Palestinians who reside there are civilians, many of whom, Dr. Moore says, currently do not support Hamas.

According to Dr. Moore, only 25 percent of Palestinians support Hamas, and a whopping 60-70 percent of the population is under the age of 18.

"Civilians have no safe space to go to. There are no bomb shelters in Gaza, no place for civilians to flee the strip," said Dr. Moore.

Israel's response comes after the firing of more than 500 rockets from Gaza into Israel.

While Israel says it's going after militant targets in Gaza, it's hard to tell with Hamas.

"What they [Hamas] are doing is firing in the general direction of things and there's no way to know where it's landing," said Dr. Moore.

There have been civilian casualties on both sides.

Mark Davidson, a local member of the Jewish community, was hoping that the two groups would find a peaceful solution to their problems.

"I feel terrible about it. I've been to Israel four times, I have family there," said Davidson.

He is still holding out hope for that peaceful solution, and is afraid to think of what would happen if things escalated further.

"I'm concerned for people's lives, property and the whole state of the country in general."

Investigator: Unclaimed millions in life insurance cash

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 16 November 2012 | 21.08

Could you be among the thousands of Ohioans who are supposed to receive thousands of dollars from unclaimed life insurance policies?  The state is holding $73 million in unclaimed  benefits, with some indivdual beneficiaries owed as much as $500,000.

Channel 3 News Investigator Tom Meyer obtained a state database, showing there are 240,000 policies that Ohioans haven't claimed for one reason or another.

In some cases, life insurance companies fail to notify the beneficiary of the policy. In other cases, beneficiaries haven't been told of the policy or they simply forgot about the policy when a loved one passed away.

Rosie Maksym, of Parma, doesn't believe the insurance company told her mother, Eileen, about a $59,000 policy Eileen's husband took out before he died six years ago.

"Its unspeakable if that's what they're (life insurance companies) doing. They're trying to con people, to swindle them of what's deserved to them," said Maksym.

Life insurance companies have three years to try to contact beneficiaries following a policyholder's death and, if they fail, they're required to turn the money over to the state.

Channel 3 News found Frank Fencl living in Lakewood. The state has nearly $87,000 of his money -- a life insurance policy left for him from his deceased Aunt.

"Could you use the money?" Meyer asked.

"Oh yes, very, very much," Fencl said.

The trade group representing insurance companies, the American Council of Life Insurers, says companies do their best to track down beneficiaries.

The group says it works with regulators and lawmakers on ways to insure that beneficiaries get the money they're due. Last year, the life insurance industry paid out $62 billion in benefits.

Ohio is one of two states that provides a free service, helping families of deceased loved ones find possible life insurance polciies.

You can file a request with the Ohio Department of Insurance and it will do the legwork. In two years, the department has heard from nearly 1,400 people. There have been 651 matches.

In addition, you can find out for yourself if you're owed money.  Channel 3 News has included the state database that lists names of beneficiaries, their addresses, the names of the insurance companies, and the amount that's owed.

To use the database (located above and to the left of the article) put in a name to search.  Click on the blue link in the search results to find out more details about a particular claim.

Willoughby Hills: Crash victim is suspect in robbery, stabbing

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio -- Willoughby and Willoughby Hills police are investigating a car crash, robbery and stabbing that all appear to be connected.

The suspect allegedly attempted to rob a CVS/Pharmacy at Som Center and Ridge roads in Willoughby. He allegedly stabbed the store clerk in the hand.

It is unclear if he managed to steal anything from the store.

Willoughby Police responded to the reported robbery and broadcasted a description of the suspect car to all police units in the area.

He was reportedly thrown from the car through the back window and taken to Hillcrest Hospital. His condition is not known.

Ways 2 Save: $23 Kung Fu Master Juicer

CLEVELAND -- As we count down to Black Friday, I'll be hand-picking some huge deals each step of the way available early.

One of the most popular viewer requests I've received is for small kitchen appliances and mainly the "Kung Fu Master" line of products. Whether it's due to infomercial coverage or previous Ways 2 Save deals, there's no denying this product line's popularity.

So, that brings me to today's half-priced deal.

The stainless steel, quiet 85-watt electric juicer by Kung Fu Master is down to $22.99 + $5 shipping, down from its $50 MSRP. CLICK HERE (http://www.justdeals.com/stainless-steel-quiet-85w-electric-juicer-by-kung-fu-master)

Today's juicer, which performed very well in our tests, is ideal for making orange or grapefruit juice and lemonade, but I will caution you -- if you need a full juice-extracting machine, that will also drop from Kung Fu next week.

If you're looking for today's shopping app that I reviewed on-air, CLICK HERE (http://www.shopkick.com/).

As we countdown to Black Friday, here's a sneak peak of some of what I'm working on:

• Around-the-clock blogging of the biggest deals before they drop.

• Top hand-picked bargain hunters from every corner of the world weighing in to assist.

• A complete ranking of the top five deals in every category for every major store.

• Forget the ad scans! I'll have a breakdown of every deal at every major store in the form of a hand-checked stock lists.

• The only deal maps in the country, where you can see a store's deal layout before anyone else.

• A secret weapon to get you the deals first so you can "cut in line" digitally.

• Two other things I'm not allowed to mention just yet...

Woman holding "idiot" sign for second day Wednesday

CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland judge is not happy with how a woman carried out her unusual sentence.

Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey S. Carr recently sentenced Shena Hardin, of Cleveland, to two mornings of standing on a street corner holding a sign that says "only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

In September, Hardin was caught on cell phone video twice driving on the sidewalk because she did not want to stop for the school bus stopped in front of her.

The second time, police were waiting.

Carr was upset when she learned Hardin merely leaned on her sign for an hour Tuesday morning, while she chain-smoked, texted, and hopped back into a waiting car a couple times during the hour she was supposed to be clearly displaying the sign.

"If I wanted someone standing there for an hour texting and smoking cigarettes, I would have had that as part of her sentence," Carr told WKYC. "But, clearly, she's missing the point. Clearly, it's still a situation where she's defiant."

Related story: 'Sidewalk driver' wears 'idiot sign' as part of punishment

Judge Pinkey Carr confirmed to Channel 3 News that she will not come out to East 38th Street and Superior Avenue to see Hardin serve her sentence.

Hardin was ordered by Judge Carr to hold a sign that read, "Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

Carr told WKYC that she didn't want to cause a scene. She said she is confident that Hardin will never drive on a sidewalk again.

Judge Carr said she spoke with Hardin's attorneys and told them Hardin needs to hold the sign up for traffic to see.

Tuesday, during the first hour of her two hour sentence, Hardin smoked, texted, talked on the phone and listened to music while she was supposed to be holding up her sign.

Carr says that Hardin is still serving a sentence being that she is about 10 days into her 30-day license suspension.

"She's offended the public. She's offended this community and they have a right to know who this person is," Carr said, as she watched video of Hardin merely leaning on her sign Tuesday morning.

"I didn't expect her to say anything. I didn't expect her to chant. I didn't expect her to smile. I'm sure she's not pleased about it," Carr said.

"It's cold out there and it's snowing but at least hold the sign because that was part of your sentence. She needs to hold that sign up. It kind of defeats the purpose."

Hardin endured occasional taunts from passersby and a scolding from Lisa Kelley, the mother of a girl in a wheelchair who was trying to board the school bus when Hardin drove on the sidewalk and tore around the bus.

"She has no remorse for what she's done," a visibly upset Kelley said, as she observed Hardin. "She's been texting, smoking her cigarettes, talking on the cell phone. She don't care. This is no punishment for her."

Judge Carr said she has no objection to Hardin wearing a hat and sunglasses while she displays the "idiot" sign Wednesday morning, but insists the Cleveland woman hold it up clearly.

Vigil held for woman whose home destroyed by blast

Written by
Associated Press

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A vigil has been held for a suburban Indianapolis teacher whose home was destroyed in an explosion that ripped through her neighborhood.

Two people were killed in the explosion Saturday night. Officials have not released their names. However, a candlelight vigil was held at Greenwood's Southwest Elementary School on Sunday night for second-grade teacher Jennifer Longworth.

She and her husband, John Dion Longworth, lived at a home destroyed in the blast. WTHR-TV reports that friends, family and colleagues of Jennifer Longworth gathered at the school.

Superintendent David Edds says the Greenwood schools will open two hours late Monday so staff can prepare for how they will talk to students about what happened.

Officials say as many as 31 homes were damaged so badly that they may have to be demolished.

Deputy Code Enforcement Director Adam Collins estimated the damage at $3.6 million.

Deputy Fire Chief Kenny Bacon told reporters Sunday investigators haven't ruled out any possible causes of the late-night blast that was heard miles away.

But a congressman who represents the Indianapolis neighborhood says investigators have ruled out a bomb or a meth lab.

U.S. Rep. Andre Carson said he had received that report from Homeland Security officials during a tour of the devastated middle-class subdivision.
