NEW YORK -- Forecasters say Hurricane Sandy is about 310 miles (505 kilometers) south-southeast of New York City, and the center of the storm is expected to be near the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday night.
The National Hurricane Center said early Monday that the storm has top sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph), with higher gusts. It is moving toward the north-northwest at 20 mph (32 kph). Hurricane-force winds extend up to 175 miles (280 kilometers) from the storm's center.
Sandy is on track to collide with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.
Major metropolitan areas from Washington to Boston are bracing for what is expected to be a superstorm that could menace some 50 million people in the most heavily populated corridor in the nation.

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. -- Residents up and down the East Coast are being urged to move inland ahead of a potentially huge storm formed by the merging of Hurricane Sandy with two wintry weather systems.
Sandy was plodding up the coast early Sunday, bringing steady rains whipped by gusting winds to North Carolina. It's expected to come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday in the mid-Atlantic. But forecasters say that wherever the storm hits, it will likely bring sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow a third of the country.
Amtrak has begun canceling train service to parts of the East Coast. Airlines are adding Sunday flights out of New York City and Washington in preparation for Monday flight cancellations.
New York's governor is considering shutting down the city's subways to avoid flooding. And half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Currently we are dealing with rain showers associated with a cold front slowly making it ways across Northeast Ohio. These rain showers are expected most of the morning, with some breaks in the showers during the afternoon hours. Most of the Northeast Ohio, except for eastern counties, will get a break from the rain showers during the overnight hours Saturday night through Sunday morning.
The rain picks back up during the day Sunday as the original cold front pushing across the state stalls and then retrogrades, or moves backwards, back across the state. This is due impart to the its interaction with Sandy as it approached the New Jersey coast.

AKRON, Ohio -- As Hurricane Sandy reaches landfall in the United States, forecasters predict that a combination of weather conditions could spell trouble for Northeast Ohio.
As is the case with all violent storms, it is important to be prepared to keep yourself and loved ones safe.

Local electric company FirstEnergy is finalizing preparation plans of their own from Ohio to New Jersey, where they operate electrical systems in parts of five different states.
In Ohio, the company is known locally as Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison.
The Akron-based company's preparation plans include mobilizing crews and securing the services of outside utility crews, electrical contractors and tree contractors to ensure they have the workforce in place should these storms cause excessive damage.
FirstEnergy officials recommend having a home preparation plan in place for between seven to ten days of power outages in a worst-case scenario with this storm system.
Here are some tips to adequately prepare yourself:
• Keep a flashlight and extra batteries handy. Be careful when burning candles because of the hazards of open flames.
• Gather extra blankets or a sleeping bag for each person. Do not use gas stoves, kerosene heaters or other open-flame heat sources to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) gas from building up in your home. CO gas can be deadly.
• If you have a water well and pump, keep an emergency supply of bottled water and/or fill your bathtub with fresh water.
• Stock an emergency supply of convenience foods that do not require cooking.
• Keep a battery-powered radio with extra batteries on hand. Tune in to a local radio station for current storm information.
• Have a hard-wired telephone or a charged cell phone handy in the event you need to report a power outage. Mobile phones can be charged in your vehicle using a car charger when power is out. If you have a smartphone, this will ensure you have access to online information sources.
Here are web links to outage maps, outage reporting forms and a list of phone numbers to report power outages to the various electricity companies in the area...
• FirstEnergy: 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877)
• American Electric Power: (800) 672-2231
(AEP requests customers only report safety hazards during major storms to avoid overloading their phone systems.)
• Cleveland Public Power: (216) 664-3156
Remember to always report downed limbs and power lines to local authorities. Stay away from downed power lines and do not attempt to move them.

AKRON -- An Ohio jury has resumed deliberations in the case of a teenager accused of participating in the slayings of three men lured by phony Craigslist job offers.
Prosecutors have portrayed defendant Brogan Rafferty as a full accomplice in the crimes, while his defense attorney argues he was a scared child stuck in a horrible situation.
The 17-year-old Rafferty faces life in prison without chance of parole if convicted of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of the men last year.
The 12-person Akron jury resumed its deliberations Friday morning after getting the case the afternoon before.
One man was killed near Akron and two more in rural eastern Ohio.
A fourth man was shot in eastern Ohio but survived.

AKRON -- A hearing is under way in Akron federal court on modifying the prison sentence given to former Cuyahoga County Auditor, Frank Russo.
The U.S. Attorney's office requested the hearing to reduce Russo's 21-year, 10-month sentence.
U.S. Attorneys say they will make a specific sentence recommendation at the hearing.
Federal officials have a plea agreement with Russo that he would assist them in their investigations with information and also testify against other defendants as required.
In return, federal officials agreed they would not prosecute other Russo family members, except for his son Vince, who had already been indicted when the plea agreement was made.
Federal officials have now informed the court that defendant's cooperation is substantially complete.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A new report says in-state tuition at Ohio's public universities increased an average of just 3 percent over the past five years.
That's the second lowest increase in the country, according to the College Board's annual pricing and student-aid reports. The Columbus Dispatch reported the statistics Wednesday.
But students at the state's four-year schools are still paying about 6 percent more than the national average - around $9,190 per year.
Add the cost of room and board, and the total annual price tag for the average student at a public university jumps up to nearly $18,000.
Students at Ohio's public two-year schools are paying about 9 percent more than they paid five years ago and nearly 22 percent more than the national average.

CLEVELAND -- Matthew Fox described the last year as difficult for him and his family after being accused of assaulting a bus driver in Cleveland.
Fox was in Cleveland shooting the movie "Alex Cross" when Heather Bormann, a party bus driver, accused the star of punching her in the chest and groin after a night out in The Flats last summer.
"I never hit a woman in my life. Never have, never will," said Fox during an appearance on the "Ellen Degeneres Show" Wednesday.
He went on to tell his side of the story.
"I was actually sucker punched in the face by a man and I retaliated against the man that sucker punched me in the face. A fight broke out and she was a woman that was in proximity to that. She decided she was going to write a different version of events that happened that night and extort money from me," said Fox.
No charges were ever filed against Fox and a civil case filed was later dismissed.

The sisters weren't so shy about expressing their concerns over proposed policies. "This idea that we should give tax breaks to the wealthy and take away from programs... well that just doesn't make any sense," said Sister Monica McGloin.
Politics aside, nuns say they worry most about how our society's most vulnerable people will be impacted. These are communities the nuns serve on a daily basis.
Sister Mary Wendeln participated in the original "Nuns on the Bus" tour that traveled from Iowa to Washington D.C. She helped organize a smaller scale campaign here in Ohio.
"We need to bring the topic of the poor back into the conversation on this electoral election season," said Sister Wendeln.
They weren't telling people how to vote, only that it was important to do so.
"People don't know what to listen to and what we're saying is our budget can't be balanced on the backs of the poor," said Sister Wendeln.
She added, "I think it is very successful because we come with a message that we as Catholic sisters want to change the rhetoric in the state of Ohio."

CLEVELAND -- Most high school students have many activities they are involved in, from study groups, sports, band and drama, students are actively seeking out a new thrill.
Jessica Patron found hers in volunteering.
"I take school and I revolve it around my volunteering. That's kind of bad to say, but it is a priority of mine," she said.
Jessica has re-arranged her hectic college schedule to help others. When she is done with her classes at Cuyahoga Community College, she volunteers at Linking Employment Abilities and Potential.
LEAP is a non-profit organization specializing in helping people with disabilities learn skils for future jobs. It is an organization that has Jessica honing in on talents she didn't know she had.
"If I never knew how to approach someone as easy as I do, I don't see how I could get a job," she said.
"Because if I don't know how to speak to someone who is shy in a corner, how could I speak to someone who is directly in front of me?"
Jessica plans on becoming a psychologist.
She values patience and can relate to the teens she helps because of her own learning disability. As a child, Jessica found out she learns at a slower rate than most students.
"I fixed the way I learned. I have to study harder than others, but if I really put my mind to it, then anything is possible. Nothing is impossible," she said.
LEAP's Youth Transition Specialist Erika Rios-Sparks tells us Patron is a volunteer who leads by example.
"She perseveres, very much throughout the difficult challenges and different difficulties that comes with the disabilities. I can say that she has overcome many of those walls that are in her way," said Sparks.

Two-year-old Michael Babuka was taken late Thursday night when a suspect stole his father's silver 2007 Chevy Impala while he was still inside.
The suspect was found driving the car around with the child inside just one town over from Niles.
He has a history of auto theft.
The suspect was intoxicated when he passed by the house where the car was parked, police said. He saw the father go into the house and proceeded to steal the car.
Babuka is said to be doing "okay" and has been reunited with his family.

CLEVELAND -- An overnight police standoff at a home on Cleveland's east side ended peacefully early Thursday morning, but two children were inside the house the entire time.
SWAT forces were called to a home in the 6600 block of Hosmer Avenue early Thursday morning after a man fired shots at police and locked himself inside of a home.
The standoff began at about 12:40 a.m.
A witness says the suspect later fired additional shots from the top floor of the home.
The standoff started as a domestic altercation between a 27-year-old boyfriend, his girlfriend and the father of the girlfriend's child, sources tell Channel 3 News.
The girlfriend and father of the girlfriend's child both left the home before the standoff began.
The 18-month-old and 5-year-old children in the home were reportedly not harmed.
No injuries were reported.

CLEVELAND -- There's a new flu shot on the market that's aimed at people who hate needles.
It's called the intradermal flu vaccination.
The needle is 90 percent smaller than the traditional vaccination.
It also uses 40 percent less antigens, which is how the shot forces the body to fight infection, but it is considered just as effective.
The drawback is that side effects are more common with this type of vaccination. These side effects include swelling, redness, irritation and pain near the injection site.
The shot is only approved for adults between 18 and 64 years old, but it is an option a lot of adults are ready to try.
Robin Hughes, who works in the medical industry, is one of those adults.
"As long as I can remember, I've had a fear of needles," Hughes said.
That fear has kept Hughes from getting a flu shot.
Until now.
"I was like: Yes! Finally someone has heard 'us.' Someone understands! We would do it if the needle wasn't 12 miles long!" Hughes said.
"[The vaccination] actually goes under the skin instead of into the muscle. It's a 90 percent smaller needle," explained Pamela Webster, a registered nurse for the CVS Minute Clinic.
The downside? It might hurt less going in, but that pain could increase later on.
"I do find that there are a great number of complaints that I have a red spot on my arm. It was sore for a longer period of time than the deeper intermuscular injection," said Dr. Thomas Tallman at the Cleveland Clinic.
Another option for needle-phobics? Nasal medication. No needle necessary!
This option is slightly different in that the antigen injected is partially dead.
You won't catch the flu since the temperature of your nasal passages keep the antigen dormant.
This option is good for anyone between 2 and 50 years old.
It's a good idea to talk with your doctor about which option is best for you.
Your insurance also may not cover the nasal spray or intradermal vaccination.
Flu season can start anytime between October and March, so the earlier you get vaccinated, the better.
The vaccination takes about two weeks to fully take effect.
For those who believe that you can catch the flu by getting the shot -- that's a myth.
Your body may feel like it's coming down with the flu, but that is actually your immune system adjusting to the antigen.
Those symptoms should go away within three to seven days.

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- More than 10,000 supporters crowded the parking lot of the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium to see Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney deliver a speech on jobs and the economy.
Romney is enjoying a surge in the polls, and in momentum, following last week's debate. He returned to Northeast Ohio for a rally in Summit County, a potential swing county in a swing state.
A vast majority -- three out of four registered voters in Cuyahoga Falls -- do not identify themselves with any political party. The Romney campaign hopes to sway undecided voters in this blue collar city with his plan to turn around the economy by helping small businesses.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie got the crowd going by calling for the end of the Obama administration in four weeks.
The crowd followed with chants of "Four more weeks! Four more weeks!"
Carol Kmiecik, of Lakewood, brought her daughter, Grace, to the rally. Grace is an undecided voter who says she is "leaning toward Obama."
"Oh, she's young. She'll learn!" said her mother, lightheartedly.
Winning undecided voters is seen as the key to winning Ohio, but they may take the most convincing. After hearing Romney's 30-minute speech, Carol Kmiecik was impressed.
"He's the smartest man and he'll make a wonderful President," she said.
However, her daughter was still undecided.
"Oh, they all just say what they think people want to hear. I still don't know," she said.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Jerry Sandusky says he's innocent and vows to keep fighting in a recorded statement broadcast by a student-run radio station at Penn State.
The statement was aired Monday, a day before the former assistant football coach was scheduled to be sentenced on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.
One of his lawyers says he would stake his life on the legitimacy of the statement.
In it, Sandusky says that in his heart, he knows he didn't do what he calls "these alleged disgusting acts." He says he's the victim of Penn State, investigators, civil attorneys, the media and others.
Mike Fliegelman, student general manager of Penn State Com Radio, says the statement was recorded at the county jail in Bellefonte.
Defense attorney Karl Rominger initially said he wasn't aware of the recording. Early Tuesday he confirmed to The Associated Press that it was authentic.
