Ariel Castro arraigned, bond set by judge

CLEVELAND --  Ariel Castro faced a judge Thursday morning in his first court appearance.

A judge set bond at $2 million for each charge against him.  There are four charges against Castro, bringing the bond total to $8 million.

Castro is charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape in connection with the disappearances of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

The three were rescued on May 6 after spending a decade trapped in a house on Seymour Avenue. Investigators say the women have told them they were allowed outside the home just twice in that entire time.

Police say the women were bound and sexually abused during their time in captivity.

Castro's brothers who were arrested along with him are not charged in the disappearances. Both were in court on outstanding misdemeanor matters and are expected to be released from custody today.

Safety Director: No human remains found at home where women escaped

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Safety Director Martin Flask says no human remains have been found at the site where Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight escaped.

The city said on-line that a thorough search of the scene at 2207 Seymour did not reveal human remains.

There were concerns about the site after disturbed soil was found in the backyard. Officials confirmed to Tom Meyer, The Investigator, the three women were forced to have sex with their captors and that the pregnant women were beaten and the babies didn't survive.

The three escaped Monday night.

Police: 'Amanda is the real hero here'

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 07 Mei 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police and law enforcement officers are giving credit to Amanda Berry for helping lead police to her and two other kidnapped women.

The three were rescued Monday evening from a home on Seymour Avenue after going missing for a decade.

Police say a check of records shows no calls regarding criminal complaints at the home. Officers did go to the house in 2004 for an unrelated investigation but says no one answered the door.

Officers say three brothers Ariel Castro, 52, Pedro Castro 54, and O'Neal Castro, 50, are in custody. Charges are pending.

Investigators say there is no evidence that the kidnappings were part of any larger criminal activity. Police say they will rely primarily in information from Amanda, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight to help guide their investigation.

During a morning news conference, police said every lead in the cases were investigated and made reference to instances in 2012 and 2006 where locations were excavated in a search for Amanda and Gina respectively.

Berry who had been missing since 2003, kicked out the bottom of a locked door to get to a neighbor's house where she called for help on Monday evening.

Police say a 6-year-old girl found with the women was Amanda's daughter but it's not clear where the child was born.

Commander Ed Tomba told reporters, "Amanda is the real hero here."

Investigators say the discovery of the women was emotional for the officers and agents who had worked the cases for a decade. "Law enforcement officers cry too," said Stephen Anthony with the FBI.

Cleveland: Three brothers identified in missing women case

CLEVELAND -- Police have identified all three men arrested after Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight were found alive Monday.

In addition to 52-year-old Ariel Castro who was previously identified, his two brothers, Pedro Castro, 54, and O'Neal Castro, 50.

During a 9 a.m. press conference, authorities said first responders arrived at the scene approximately two minutes after the call came in.

"This was a traumatic experience for them and we need to give them room in this," Mayor Frank Jackson says of the women.

Investigators reportedly worked until 5 a.m. at the Seymour Avenue home, but did not indicate the conditions in which the women were held.

Berry, DeJesus and Knight all escaped a home on Seymour Avenue after each had been missing for years.

"To find these three girls recovered, it just gives us, the police department, a boost," Police Chief Michael McGrath says.

Authorities are asking for patience from everybody as they work to investigate the situation.

Cleveland: Police surround home after west side shooting

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 06 Mei 2013 | 21.08

CLEVELAND -- Police are in a standoff situation with a man neighbors say was walking down the street and firing his gun overnight.

Reports of shots fired in the area of West 103rd Street and Madison Avenue first came in at about 2:45 a.m.

Once at the scene, police found multiple shell casings on the ground and saw a man looking out of a window.

Police ordered the man to exit the home, but he refused. SWAT was then notified and called to the scene.

Investigators say two men were seen going into the home. It is not clear what their involvement was with the shots fired.

Officials do not have a full head count of how many people may be inside the home.

Police have evacuated two to three homes surrounding where the suspect is believed to be.

Officials began to set up a perimeter in the area of Madison Avenue, West Boulevard and W. 103rd Street as recently as 5:30 a.m.

Green Circle Growers overcomes fire, thriving

OBERLIN -- While a major fire may have set them back, Green Circle Growers in Lorain County is still sprouting plants by the millions.

It was five days after Valentine's Day when 30 mph winds blew this place -- not a kiss -- but a sucker punch: 200,000 square feet of greenhouse -- gone.

From the outside looking in, you'd think losing the workspace would be crippling. But from the inside out, you can tell those 200,000 square feet were a drop in the bucket.

A golf cart is needed to get around this 100-acre wide "factory under glass" -- that's four million square feet. Take FirstEnergy Stadium and multiply it by 70.

Green Circle Growers has doubled in size in seven years, not by selling to green thumbs, but to big box stores. Locally, you're going to see our product in Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Sam's Club.

They're a top 10 employer in Lorain County.

In peak season they employ about as many people as Oberlin College.

The fire was a set-back, but they're building back even bigger.

And for a company that knows a thing or two about growth -- "rosey" is how they'd gauge their future here.

Israel deploys rocket defense system in north

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 05 Mei 2013 | 21.08

BEIRUT -- Israel's military has deployed a rocket defense system to the north of the country following reported Israeli airstrikes in neighboring Syria targeting weapons believed to be destined for Lebanon's Hezbollah militants.

The military said it moved two Iron Dome batteries Sunday as part of "ongoing situational assessments."

The move came hours after Israel carried out what an intelligence official said was an airstrike in Damascus that attacked a shipment of Iranian-made missiles bound for Hezbollah.

It was the second Israeli strike in three days.

The stepped-up Israeli activity has raised tensions with Syria, Hezbollah and the group's Iranian backers.

Iron Dome protects against short-range rockets. Hezbollah has thousands of such projectiles.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is returning to Ohio to give his first commencement address of 2013 at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Ohio was at the center of last year's presidential election, and Obama's victory there was critical to winning enough electoral votes to secure a second term.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden traveled frequently to the Buckeye State throughout the campaign. Ohio State says more than 10,000 students will receive diplomas Sunday, including 130 veterans.

Obama will give two other commencement speeches this season at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and all-male Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Both ceremonies are later in May. Obama is fresh off a three-day trip to Mexico and Costa Rica that ended on Saturday.

Israel officials: Strike on Syria targeted weapons

WASHINGTON -- Israeli officials have confirmed the country's air force carried out a strike against Syria and say it targeted a shipment of advanced missiles.

The officials say the shipment was not of chemical arms, but of "game changing" weapons bound for the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group. They say the airstrike was early Friday. They did not say where it took place.

They spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a secret military issue.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned in recent weeks that Israel would be prepared to take military action if chemical weapons or other arms were to reach Hezbollah.

In January, an Israeli airstrike hit a convoy believed to be carrying advanced anti-aircraft weapons to Hezbollah.

Police: Lice-infested women went 'shopping' at Walmart

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 03 Mei 2013 | 21.08

BRIMFIELD -- Police here said two women from Akron went on a late-night "shoplifting" trip to Walmart.

Police said that, as the items in one cart were being scanned and bagged, one of the women pushed a full cart of merchandise out of the store.

Then the other woman ran out after her. Police say a witness snapped some pictures on his smart phone, "which is always great when the suspects give us the old 'that wasn't me' speech," Police Chief Oliver said.

The women drove off but police tracked them to their home in Akron, and in conjunction with Akron police, found over $1,300 worth of stolen merchandise.

But there was another problem, police said. The women's house was infested with bed bugs and lice, "the double whammy of itchy," Oliver said.

Officers had to be decontaminated and the evidence was treated and triple-bagged. Police also decontaminated the women before they were given their orange jumpsuits.

Hinckley: Saddling up at River Road Horse Farm

HINCKLEY -- Sure, the nation's eyes will be focused on Louisville this weekend as the Kentucky Derby gets ready to race, but you don't have to go very far to find horses and farms.

WKYC's Joe Cronauer takes us to one and uncovers their connection to a racing legend!

These majestic creatures and this breathtaking scenery are just 35 minutes from downtown Cleveland. Mark Palik owns the River Road Horse Farm in Hinckley.  It's just one of many incredible places in our area.

"This is the actually the best place in Ohio for trail riding with all the Metro park trail rides we have," Palik says.

With 38 acres in a serene setting and an indoor/outdoor arena, you can board your horse, get training and ride 25 acres of pastures -- quite a contrast from the from Kentucky Derby, which is dubbed "The fastest two minutes in sports."

"We do have a connection with the Kentucky Derby" horse owner Rene Eisenhut says. "My horse is Gravitus. He is a half brother of Barbero who won the Kentucky Derby 2006."

Barbero's Father is a stallion that also sired Gravitas. Oh, and the name?

"I looked it up," Eisenhut explains. "It's Latin for 'dignified leader' and he's pretty bossy, so it fits him."

It seems the riders get as much out of the experience as the horses

"I love being out here with him," Eisenhut says. "It's a lot of work but it's great therapy."

Winding through tunnels under Lake Erie

It's a massive $198 million undertaking that's happening beneath your feet -- and under a sliver of Lake Erie.

We want to take you on what can only be described as the most unique commute in all of Ohio. Instead of driving up I-77 to get to the office, these workers make their way into "the shaft" by taking a ride down a knee-knocking man-made canyon just off I-90 in Bratenahl.

It goes 200 feet down under Lake Erie.

It's deep, dark, loud and always about 55 degrees.

Like clockwork, a train -- Cleveland's only real subway -- awaits the descendants of "the shaft" for a 15 minute, 15 mph train ride from the site in Bratenahl to the location of Cleveland's big dig.

What they're doing down here is building an 18,000-foot long tunnel from Bratenahl under the highway, and yes, under the lake, to near the Euclid line.

The underground area is big enough to hold New York City trains

In the end, this project will prevent about a billion gallons in sewer oveflow from entering Lake Erie every year.

According to one worker, we have more tunnels in Cleveland per capita than most other cities.

We finally arrive at the site of the drill known as the TBM -- the tunnel boring machine. It's the size of three train cars and requires 12 people to run it.

And when it starts up, it chews up. Millions of pounds of shale have been drilled, rolled and raised up top.

Employing trains and elevators and dozens of workers deep underground is the biggest project ever taken on by the NEO Regional Sewer district. Nearly $200 million spent on waste.  A worksite no human will set foot in for generations after the valves open down here next year.
