Cleveland: "Opt for the Alternative" is a phrase you will hear from ODOT officials who are asking Westside commuters into downtown to use I-490 East to I-77 North instead of I-90 East. However for many commuters, the alternative wasn't much of an alternative to avoiding traffic delays this week.
Here are a few more alternative routes for travelers headed Northeast into downtown Cleveland from: 176 (Jennings Freeway), I-480, I-90 and I-71.
From I-90 East: Exit at W. 25th. Head North towards Lorain Road. Make a right on Lorain Road; which will take you into downtown. (5 minutes)
From I-71 North: Take the Fulton Road/Pearl Road/W. 25th St. exit. Make a left onto Pearl Rd/W. 25th St. Take W. 25th into downtown. (7 minutes)
From I-480 East: Take State Rd exit. Make a left. Take State Rd to Pearl Rd/W. 25th into downtown. (15 minutes)
From 176 (Jennings Freeway): Take W. 14th exit into downtown. (5 minutes)
ODOT'S I-490 East to I-77 North alternative route is all part of the Innerbelt Bridge project. The project is bringing major traffic pattern changes for West side commuters. Those changes include:
- SR 176 (Jennings Freeway) ramp to I-71 North/I-90 East closed
- I-90 East reduced to two thru-lanes between I-490 and I-77
- Access to E 22nd and Carnegie exits are unavailable from I-90 East (Commuters need to use I-490 east to I-77 north to access these exits)
These changes will remain in place until 2016 when the second Innerbelt Bridge is expected to be completed.
ODOT is also encouraging the use of alternative forms of transportation and riding the RTA to avoid congestion.
