SOUTH EUCLID -- South Euclid City Council will be holding a meeting Monday night at 8 p.m. to discuss proposed layoffs to the city's police and fire departments.
According to the fire department, South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo put out a memo after the two departments were unable to trim $350,000 off their budget.
The memo also stated that five firefighters and two police officers would be laid off effective June 29.
Firefighters have been picketing and going door-to-door to try to drum up community support.
They say the cuts would threaten public safety as they would only be staffed enough to operate a one-squad unit. City council has discussed a possibly safety levy or perhaps charging for garbage removal to prevent the cuts.
City officials say the cuts are necessary after losing funding from the state and county.
