Kid inventor's life-saving invention nabs nation's attention

A report released this week shows 19 children in the U.S. have died so far this year as a result of being left in a hot car.

But an 11-year-old boy from Nashville came up with an invention for a recent nationwide contest created by the University of Akron that could prevent those types of deaths from happening.

His device could be far-reaching -- and is already gaining nationwide recognition.

Andrew Pelham's "E-Z Baby Saver" is the result of a challenge by UA that required kids to invent something made primarily out of rubber bands.

After about a week of brainstorming, his invention was an idea that stuck with him -- especially since he remembered the story of a 10-month old baby near his hometown who perished in a hot car last summer.

Andrew is the oldest of four children, two still in car seats.

The "E-Z Baby Saver" is something his family regularly uses to keep the same thing from happening to them.

One end of the rubber-band device hooks on the back of the driver's seat. The other end attaches to the driver's side door. It prevents an adult from exiting their vehicle without being forced to check the back seat.

For the creation, Andrew won a prize as a runner-up in the nationwide contest.

"I just hope people can use my design in the real world, soon, because I just want to save one life, and then I can say my idea was successful," Andrew adds.

Heavy rains flood roads, complicate morning commute

CLEVELAND -- Heavy rains passing through Northeast Ohio are flooding roadways and making rush hour a real challenge for commuters.

Major delays popped up on I-480 East at Northfield Road when a truck spun out into a wall just before 7 a.m. Several other such accidents, including spinouts, cars off the road and collisions have been constantly challenging local police departments this morning.

Reports of flooding creeks and rivers have also caused problems across the region.

Downed limbs and lighting strikes have also been reported.

Another round of thunderstorms are expected later today before things finally dry out and steady sunshine returns to the forecast.

Cleveland one of America's top bed-bug infested cities

Start scratching. Terminix has just issued its annual list of top bed-bug infested cities. In a twist this year, the exterminator has identified the 15 top cities with the largest increase in infestations.

We'll get to that, but first, a look at where the most bed bug-specific calls from anguished (we presume) customers are coming from. Terminix has 300-plus branches nationwide.

The 15 cities with the greatest increases in bed bug complaint calls to Terminix:

- Sacramento - 54%

- Milwaukee - 53%

- Las Vegas - 50%

- Columbus, Ohio - 47%

- Baltimore - 46%

- Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif. - 41%

- St. Louis - 40%

- Cleveland - 36%

- Louisville - 31%

- Denver - 28%

- Los Angeles - 27%

- San Francisco - 26%

- Dallas/Ft. Worth - 25%

- Nashville - 17%

- Houston - 15%

The Terminix press release quotes one of its entomologists as saying bed bugs have been associated with anemia, can lead to problems related to excessive scratching and can have a "psychological impact."

I stay in a lot of hotels and I've never seen a bed bug, nor have I been victim to any of the maladies mentioned here, save for occasional bouts of bed-bug hysteria triggered by reading lists like this one.

The condition causes me to whip off the top bedding for closer inspection of the sheets. I also attempt to look behind the headboard for telltale specks on the wall (though that's more often than not futile, since headboards in the grade of hotels I stay in tend to be bolted to the wall).

But more often than not, I don't think twice about these tenacious little suckers I keep reading about

Amanda, Michelle, Gina release 'thank you' video

CLEVELAND -- Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus have released a statement on YouTube, thanking everyone for their support and generosity.

The statement, released at 12 a.m. EDT on the newly-created Hennes Paynter Communications YouTube channel, featured all three women, as well as Gina's mother and father.

In a statement released on behalf of the families of the three women:

"Amanda, Gina and Michelle wanted to say thank you to people from Cleveland and across the world, now that two months have passed," said Kathy Joseph, attorney for Michelle Knight. "People are recognizing them now as they go about in public, so they decided to put voices and faces to their heartfelt messages. It was their decision to relay their thanks in this way to all of the many people who have offered support to them, for which they are extremely grateful."

"But it is important for everyone, especially the media, to understand that the three women still have a strong desire for privacy," said James Wooley, attorney for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. "They do not want to talk about their ordeal with the media or anyone else. This cannot be stated strongly enough. We thank everyone for the privacy and courtesy shown to Amanda, Gina and Michelle over the last few months and ask that this continue."

"I'm getting stronger each day and having my privacy has helped immensely," Berry said in the video.

Berry asked for her continued privacy going forward.

Nancy Ruiz and Felix DeJesus also extend their deepest gratitude in the video and offer some advice to the community.

"Parents... who have a loved one missing... count on your neighbors. Don't be afraid to ask for the help because help is available," said Ruiz.

Michelle Knight offers uplifting words of her resolve and tenacity.

"I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and with my head held high and my feet firmly on the ground," Knight said. "I will not let the situation define who I am. I will define the situation."

Knight said she will not let her experience consume her with hatred and has remained strong in her faith.

"We need to take a leap of faith and know that God is in control," Knight said. "The plan that He gave me was to help others that have been in the same situations I have been in."

All three women thanked the community for their ongoing prayers and support.

As of July 2, 2013, when the video was recorded, more than $1,050,000 has been donated to the fund with over 9,200 individual donors.

Ohio school district to let some employees carry guns

NEWCOMERSTOWN -- An eastern Ohio school district will allow some employees to carry guns on school property beginning this fall.

The Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District board recently approved a policy authorizing employees designated by the board and superintendent to carry guns.

The (Dover-New Philadelphia) Times-Reporter says the district released few details of the plan that will go into effect in the coming school year. Board President Jerry Lahmers says it would be counterproductive if the general public knew how many people were authorized to carry weapons or in which buildings they worked.

Those carrying guns must get tactical training and be recertified by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Department annually. They also must have a permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Schools officials say the policy should help keep students safe.
