13 things that will cost much more this year

CLEVELAND -- Before we get to the bad, there is some good. Some of the best deals we've seen since Black Friday are expected to drop overnight and I'll feature those right here for a major Ways 2 Save tomorrow.

You can also snag additional savings by following me on Twitter, CLICK HERE.

#1 Airfare

As if it wasn't already expensive enough! More changes and practices from the airline industry will bring price increases for the year ahead. Want a hot meal on a long-distance flight? You could soon be paying extra for that. On top of the increases we've already saw last year, airfare analyst and CEO of FareCompare.com, Rick Seaney, ticket prices will increase around 7%.

Although it has not officially been announced, many insiders expect increases to baggage fees, as well as onboard options and seat selection.

#2 Digital Cameras

You can blame the smartphone and smaller tablets equipped with cameras.

Fewer people are buying consumer-grade digital cameras, which means manufacturers are producing fewer cameras, leading to fewer discounts. In 2011, I was able to flag quality higher-end 14 MP cameras for $40 during the holidays. In 2012, the exact same cameras sold for $60 during the same sales period. Prices only go up from here. Expect a $20 to $30 price increase per unit.

#3 Steaks & Hamburgers

Enjoy those Omaha Steaks deals the second they drop! According to the most recent forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, higher meat prices are due to an intense drought that plagued almost all farmlands across the U.S. this past year. This caused corn and other animal feed ingredients to skyrocket, passing the price increase along to consumers. Expect a price increase of around 4% per cut.

#4 Beer

Copper prices are on the rise, as part of a 2013 price increase flagged by freelance writer/consumer reporter Laura Heller. According to Heller, "it's copper's time to shine." That's due to a move by the SEC to approve a fund to trade the metal. The fund could lead to the diminished availability of the metal in the U.S., affecting equipment for brewing beer and distilling liquor.

#5 Smartphones

The push to get higher megapixel cameras into devices like smartphones and the ripple effect of a recent decision by T-Mobile will dramatically affect prices throughout the industry. Later this year, T-Mobile will push no-contract cell phone plans, but charge consumers full prices for their phones. This elimination of the mobile phone subsidy is being observed very closely by competing companies and analysts suggest this is a game-changer for us all. On something like a new iPhone that can be purchased for $199 when it's released on a two-year contract, customers would pay $600 instead. Even if installment plans are available, this is a major change for the average customer to wrap his or her head around.

#6 Desktops

You can blame portable computing. In 2010, I received close to 200 requests for desktop computers from Ways 2 Save viewers. In 2011, I received about half that number. Last year, I received a whopping 15 deal requests for desktops. The diminished demand is being felt even moreso by the companies that produce desktops. This year, fewer models will be produced from fewer companies, resulting in higher costs. Expect to pay $50 to $100 more per desktop.

#7 Laptops

In the same way desktops are affected by portable computers, laptops are influenced by hyper-portable, powerful tablets. Try and find someone who didn't have an iPad Mini on their wish list this past Christmas! With the Microsoft Surface now on the market offering Microsoft Office applications in an extremely sleek and portable presence, laptop demand will further drop this year. With less laptop competition, expect to pay up to $80 more per unit on mid-end laptop configurations.

#8 Shipping Costs

I noticed it when Amazon.com started launching categories of "add-on only" items. Despite the fact I already pay $79 per year for Amazon Prime (which also gets me the Amazon Video streaming service), items that I'd regularly be entitled to with free two-day shipping, now cannot be shipped unless a minimum order total is met. This is just a single example of price increases directly attributed to UPS and FedEX. Both shipping giants are increasing prices by up to 4.9% for 2013.

#9 TVs

Stream, stream, stream! The increased demand for streaming services has manufacturers like LG and Samsung scrambling to build Wi-Fi and Netflix/Hulu/Vudu-ready televisions. With the majority of the older LCD television stock depleted over the course of 2012, the current LED technology commands a higher price. Based on the sales numbers I've seen, consumers can expect to pay around $60 more per mid-end to high-end LED television.

#10 Cable Television

The number of people dumping their cable providers for services like Hulu and abandoning settop boxes for Roku and Apple TV will result in higher rates. As cable companies jump to cover their operating costs with fewer customers, rates are expected to increase, although this will vary by region and provider. Initially, package increase costs are not expecting to be more than $5 on average per customer.

#11 Satellite TV

The two biggest players in the satellite world, Direct TV and Dish Network, have significant rate hikes planned this year. In 10 days, some DISH customers will have their rates raised by as much as $15. DirecTV customers will see increases of around 5% across the board. You can blame the increase in programming costs affecting service providers.

#12 Cars

Every year, we see modest car price increases across the board, but this year, certain manufacturers are increasing prices by almost $1,400. CNN Money flagged the base price for a 2013 Lexus CT 200h up $3,000 this year and the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Sedan at $1,350 more. The nice thing about base price increases is that local dealerships always respond with better promotions and on the whole, I expect you to get more for your money when it comes to features this coming year.

#13 Tuition

It probably shouldn't surprise you to see tuition increases this year, as that's the case every year, but DealNews.com has paid particular attention to state school tuition increase, which weren't initially on my radar. According to their research, which they pulled from the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center, public 4-year colleges will increase tuition by 4.8% on average with an increase of 3.7% in fees. The almost 9% collective increase will affect students and their families across the country.

Despite the increases, there are some superb January purchases jam-packed with savings that can benefit the consumer all year. I'll feature those right here tomorrow on Ways 2 Save.

Delay requested in TJ Lane trial

Written by
Associated Press

CHARDON -- A judge is expected to consider a request to delay next week's scheduled trial of an Ohio teenager charged in the school shooting deaths of three students.

The final pretrial hearing for 18-year-old T.J. Lane is scheduled for Monday morning in Chardon. The judge is expected to discuss with attorneys a motion filed last week seeking to postpone the trial to give them more time to prepare.

Prosecutors and Lane's attorneys agree on the proposed delay. The trial is scheduled to start Jan. 14.

Prosecutors say Lane took a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to Chardon High School last Feb. 27 and fired 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table. Three were killed and three others were wounded.

We've confirmed reports that the Eagles were still meeting with Chip Kelly late Saturday night.

The Browns were supposed to have dinner with Kelly to strike a deal, but reports say that meeting hasn't happened.

The Eagles seemed luke warm on Kelly but reports say they did send their Owner, President and General Manager to Arizona to meet with Kelly on Saturday.

That lunch meeting with Kelly and the Eagles went past the dinner hour.  A beat writer for the Philadelphia inquirer told Channel 3 Sports that they were still meeting as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The Browns met with Chip Kelly for seven hours yesterday, but they left the meeting without a signed deal.

It appears the browns have serious competition now for Chip Kelly.

Stay with wkyc.com and Channel 3 for the very latest in the search for a new Browns head coach.

Profile: Chip Kelly

Charles "Chip" Kelly, the reported frontrunner for the Cleveland Browns coaching job, has a long and successful college coaching career.

Kelly started coaching in 1990 at Columbia University as a secondary and special teams coach for the freshman team. The following year Kelly coached the outside linebackers and strong safeties for the varsity team.

Kelly was the running backs coach in 1992 at the University of New Hampshire. He left there for Johns Hopkins University for one season as defensive coordinator. In 1994 Kelly returned to the University of New Hampshire as the running backs coach (1994-1996) and offensive line coach (1997-1998). Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999 and continued there until 2006).

In 2007 Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator at Oregon and led the Pac-10 in scoring (38.15 ppg) and total offense (467.54 ypg) his first year. In 2008 Kelly improved the offensive output of his team to lead the Pac -10 again. In March 2009 Oregon Head Coach Mike Bellotti was promoted to athletic director and Kelly became head coach on March 30, 2009.

In 2009 Kelly's Oregon Ducks would win an outright conference championship in his first season and a Rose Bowl visit for the first time since 1995. The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Oregon Ducks 26-17 in the Rose Bowl. Kelly was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year.

In 2010, Oregon achieved the #1 spot on the USA Today Coaches Poll, followed by a #1 BCS ranking. Oregon won their second consecutive outright Pac-10 title with an offense that averaged 49.3 points and 537.5 yards per game during the regular season. Oregon was selected to play in the BCS National Championship Game against a Cameron Newton lead Auburn Tigers team. The Ducks lost 22-19, but despite the loss Kelly was recognized for his accomplishment. Kelly received the Eddie Robins Coach of the Year award, his second consecutive Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Walter Camp Coach of the Year and AP Coach of the Year honors.

2011 would bring similar successes including a Pac-12 championship. The Ducks defeated Wisconsin to win the Rose Bowl-Oregon's first Rose Bowl win since 1917. Following the season Kelly would get one interview for an NFL head coaching job from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He turned down the offer.

In 2012, Kelly helped lead the Ducks to a 12-1 season and a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta bowl where Oregon defeated Kansas State 35 -17. Oregon senior quarterback Collin Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Reports: Browns, Chip Kelly close to a deal

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

Kirby Lee/USA Today Sports

The Browns search for a new head coach is really heating up.

Friday afternoon in Arizona, the Browns interviewed Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly.

According to the NFL Network, the two sides are reportedly close to reaching a deal.

The Associated Press is reporting that Kelly was also supposed to meet with the Eagles in Arizona but a person familiar with the interviews says the Eagles are "heading in another direction" because Kelly is close to a deal with the Browns.

Kelly is the hottest college coach out there. He led the Oregon Ducks Thursday night to a Fiesta Bowl win over Kansas State.

If you saw the game, then you had a good look as his prolific zone-read offensive attack, which is one of the reasons he is desired in the NFL.

The Browns have a major interest in Kelly and with new owner Jimmy Haslam, money is not an issue. They can win him over with cash.

Kelly made it clear last night an answer will come soon.

Kelly has never coached in the NFL. He interviewed with Tampa Bay last year but turned down the offer.

Other teams have interest including the Cardinals and Bills.

The Browns goal is to not let anyone else land him.

Jim Donovan: Chip Kelly is all about scoring

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

Matt Kartozian/USA Today Sports

As reports circulate that the Browns and Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly are very close to reaching a deal, Channel 3 Sports Anchor Dave Chudowsky talked to radio Voice of the Browns, Jim Donovan, about what a potential Kelly-era in Cleveland would bring for fans.

First and foremost, Donovan says fans who love touchdowns and scoring will find Kelly an exciting prospect at head coach. "Kelly is all about out-scoring you, " Donovan said.

As for Kelly bringing his much admired zone-read offense to Cleveland, Donovan says he believes the system can work at the professional level-if Kelly is willing to modify it. Unlike at the collegiate level, in the NFL there are firm roster limits which means Kelly cannot draw from an unending talent pool to run the offense and will have to find multi-talented players.

The system, Donovan says, requires a quarterback to run and throw which can lead to injuries. As a result, a team will need more than one quarterback ready to go. He adds that this is a system that may actually favor Colt McCoy and not Brandon Weeden, the Browns current starting quarterback.

Donovan says he believes Alabama's Nick Saban was also on the Browns wish list. "I think Nick Saban was the first choice of owner Jimmy Haslam, " said Donovan.   But Saban reportedly has passed on the chance, partly because at age 61, Saban may have "decided at this stage of his career that this was more than he wanted to take on."

The biggest hurdle facing Kelly if he comes to Cleveland? Donovan says hands down it is putting together a confident, capable coaching staff. Most of Kelly's current staff will likely remain at Oregon. He says it will be up to the Browns brass to find assistants and coordinators to help Kelly should he come to Cleveland.

The Cleveland Browns interviewed Ken Whisenhunt about their head coaching vacancy.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported the story.

Mortensen reported that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner met with Whisenhunt in Arizona on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals fired Whisenhunt after his sixth season as their head coach.

The 50-year old Whisenhunt compiled a regular season record of 45-51 with the Cardinals. He had a 4-2 record in the post season.

Whisenhunt was the special teams coach in Cleveland in 1999.  He also served as the offensive coordinator for the Steelers for three seasons.

The Browns also interviewed Arizona defensive coordinator Ray Horton on Tuesday in Arizona.  The team is expected to talk to Oregon's Chip Kelly on Friday.
