Ashtabula County: Water recovery effort underway Sunday

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP-- The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department, along with the Coast Guard, continue search and recovery efforts to find a 13-year-old teen near Saybrook Park Saturday.

The Coast Guard says they received a call about 9 p.m. Friday night that the boy was missing in Lake Erie.

Apparently the teen was swimming with some people, they got out of the water and then noticed he was missing.

Several police, fire and rescue agencies were sent to Saybrook Park, including a dive team.

According to the Coast Guard, a helicopter from The Ohio State University Police Department was also in on the search and rescue.

Cory Monteith, star of hit show 'Glee,' found dead

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Police say actor Cory Monteith, star of the hit TV show "Glee," has been found dead in a Vancouver hotel.

The 31-year-old Monteith, who played the character Finn Hudson on the TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver's waterfront at about noon Saturday.

Deputy Police Chief Doug Lepard says there is no indication of foul play.

Monteith's body was found by hotel staff after he missed his check-out time, Lepard said.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," Coroner Lisa Lapointe said.

Lepard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

Monteith had voluntarily entered rehab for substance abuse problems in April.

Akron | Search resumes Saturday for missing boy

AKRON -- Search and rescue crews back in the water searching  Akron Peninsula Road and Mud Creek in Akron.

They search is for Nic Shaffer, 12, who was with his mother and sister when he fell or slipped into the water and was swept away in Mud Creek and into the Cuyahoga River.

Nic, who is autistic, was wearing shorts but no shirt when he went into the water.

He can swim but he doesn't really like to, his family said.

The family asked is anyone sees him to please contact the authorities.

Normally the creek is about ankle-deep but with the rain it's gotten a lot deeper and the the current is strong.

The creek is behind the home Nic lives in with his mother.

Authorities will come back in the morning for a recovery effort.

Cleveland: Teen dies after falling from a schools roof

CLEVELAND -- Police say an 18-year-old man fell from the roof of a Cleveland school has died.

It happened just before 2 a.m. The teen was on the roof of Clara E. Westropp Elementary School at 19101 Puritas Avenue.

He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The Cleveland Police Department is investigating the accident. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Surprise homecoming for Marine's family at Cedar Point

CEDAR POINT -- When Gunnery Sergeant Jason Cooper learned he'd have the chance to come home for some R&R this summer, he thought he'd make it a big surprise.

An 18 year veteran of the US Marine Corps, Cooper is stationed with his company in Bahrain, in the Middle East. 

This deployment began in February and the Coopers did not think Jason would be able to come home at all until next year.

But Gunnery Sgt. Cooper has surprised them before, and this time he made a gesture on a grand scale.

By coordinating with Cedar Point, he was able to set up a scenario where his family spent the day Thursday at the park for what they thought would be military appreciation.

Lisa Cooper and their three children, Ethan, Jayden and Mikayla, were called up on stage before the nightly light and dance show, to watch a video message, taped by the husband and father.

When the message was over, the family turned around and saw GySgt Cooper in the audience.

He raced up on stage for a hug and a kiss.

"It was a great reaction, seeing the wife all emotional like that, and just being able to hold my daughter, hug my sons, and give my wife a kiss and tell her I'll be home for a while," GySgt Cooper said.

The family will have fifteen days together in Amherst, before the Marine returns to his company in Bahrain to serve the rest off this deployment.
