Two teams after Chip Kelly

We've confirmed reports that the Eagles were still meeting with Chip Kelly late Saturday night.

The Browns were supposed to have dinner with Kelly to strike a deal, but reports say that meeting hasn't happened.

The Eagles seemed luke warm on Kelly but reports say they did send their Owner, President and General Manager to Arizona to meet with Kelly on Saturday.

That lunch meeting with Kelly and the Eagles went past the dinner hour.  A beat writer for the Philadelphia inquirer told Channel 3 Sports that they were still meeting as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The Browns met with Chip Kelly for seven hours yesterday, but they left the meeting without a signed deal.

It appears the browns have serious competition now for Chip Kelly.

Madison Twp: House explosion damages homes

MADISON TWP. -- A home explosion in Madison Township has destroyed one home and damaged 5 others.

The explosion happened just after midnight on Parkview Drive. Authorities tell Channel 3 the home was vacant and no one else suffered injuries.

But neighboring homes had windows blown out and debris fall on their property. The Madison Township Fire Department and Ohio State Patrol is on scene this morning investigating.

East Ohio Gas is also on scene, shutting off and digging up gas lines to the home. Residents in the surrounding area will not have their gas shut off or any disruption to service.

Profile: Chip Kelly

Charles "Chip" Kelly, the reported frontrunner for the Cleveland Browns coaching job, has a long and successful college coaching career.

Kelly started coaching in 1990 at Columbia University as a secondary and special teams coach for the freshman team. The following year Kelly coached the outside linebackers and strong safeties for the varsity team.

Kelly was the running backs coach in 1992 at the University of New Hampshire. He left there for Johns Hopkins University for one season as defensive coordinator. In 1994 Kelly returned to the University of New Hampshire as the running backs coach (1994-1996) and offensive line coach (1997-1998). Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999 and continued there until 2006).

In 2007 Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator at Oregon and led the Pac-10 in scoring (38.15 ppg) and total offense (467.54 ypg) his first year. In 2008 Kelly improved the offensive output of his team to lead the Pac -10 again. In March 2009 Oregon Head Coach Mike Bellotti was promoted to athletic director and Kelly became head coach on March 30, 2009.

In 2009 Kelly's Oregon Ducks would win an outright conference championship in his first season and a Rose Bowl visit for the first time since 1995. The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Oregon Ducks 26-17 in the Rose Bowl. Kelly was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year.

In 2010, Oregon achieved the #1 spot on the USA Today Coaches Poll, followed by a #1 BCS ranking. Oregon won their second consecutive outright Pac-10 title with an offense that averaged 49.3 points and 537.5 yards per game during the regular season. Oregon was selected to play in the BCS National Championship Game against a Cameron Newton lead Auburn Tigers team. The Ducks lost 22-19, but despite the loss Kelly was recognized for his accomplishment. Kelly received the Eddie Robins Coach of the Year award, his second consecutive Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Walter Camp Coach of the Year and AP Coach of the Year honors.

2011 would bring similar successes including a Pac-12 championship. The Ducks defeated Wisconsin to win the Rose Bowl-Oregon's first Rose Bowl win since 1917. Following the season Kelly would get one interview for an NFL head coaching job from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He turned down the offer.

In 2012, Kelly helped lead the Ducks to a 12-1 season and a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta bowl where Oregon defeated Kansas State 35 -17. Oregon senior quarterback Collin Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Reports: Browns, Chip Kelly close to a deal

The Browns search for a new head coach is really heating up.

Friday afternoon in Arizona, the Browns interviewed Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly.

According to the NFL Network, the two sides are reportedly close to reaching a deal. 

The Associated Press is reporting that Kelly was also supposed to meet with the Eagles in Arizona but a person familiar with the interviews says the Eagles are "heading in another direction" because Kelly is close to a deal with the Browns.

Kelly is the hottest college coach out there. He led the Oregon Ducks Thursday night to a Fiesta Bowl win over Kansas State.

If you saw the game, then you had a good look as his prolific zone-read offensive attack, which is one of the reasons he is desired in the NFL.

The Browns have a major interest in Kelly and with new owner Jimmy Haslam, money is not an issue. They can win him over with cash.

Kelly made it clear last night an answer will come soon.

Kelly has never coached in the NFL. He interviewed with Tampa Bay last year but turned down the offer.

Other teams have interest including the Cardinals and Bills. 

The Browns goal is to not let anyone else land him.

Jim Donovan: Chip Kelly is all about scoring

As reports circulate that the Browns and Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly are very close to reaching a deal, Channel 3 Sports Anchor Dave Chudowsky talked to radio Voice of the Browns, Jim Donovan, about what a potential Kelly-era in Cleveland would bring for fans.

First and foremost, Donovan says fans who love touchdowns and scoring will find Kelly an exciting prospect at head coach. "Kelly is all about out-scoring you, " Donovan said.

As for Kelly bringing his much admired zone-read offense to Cleveland, Donovan says he believes the system can work at the professional level-if Kelly is willing to modify it. Unlike at the collegiate level, in the NFL there are firm roster limits which means Kelly cannot draw from an unending talent pool to run the offense and will have to find multi-talented players.

The system, Donovan says, requires a quarterback to run and throw which can lead to injuries. As a result, a team will need more than one quarterback ready to go. He adds that this is a system that may actually favor Colt McCoy and not Brandon Weeden, the Browns current starting quarterback.

Donovan says he believes Alabama's Nick Saban was also on the Browns wish list. "I think Nick Saban was the first choice of owner Jimmy Haslam, " said Donovan.   But Saban reportedly has passed on the chance, partly because at age 61, Saban may have "decided at this stage of his career that this was more than he wanted to take on."

The biggest hurdle facing Kelly if he comes to Cleveland? Donovan says hands down it is putting together a confident, capable coaching staff. Most of Kelly's current staff will likely remain at Oregon. He says it will be up to the Browns brass to find assistants and coordinators to help Kelly should he come to Cleveland.

Browns interview Ken Whisenhunt

The Cleveland Browns interviewed Ken Whisenhunt about their head coaching vacancy.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported the story.

Mortensen reported that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner met with Whisenhunt in Arizona on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals fired Whisenhunt after his sixth season as their head coach.

The 50-year old Whisenhunt compiled a regular season record of 45-51 with the Cardinals. He had a 4-2 record in the post season.

Whisenhunt was the special teams coach in Cleveland in 1999.  He also served as the offensive coordinator for the Steelers for three seasons.

The Browns also interviewed Arizona defensive coordinator Ray Horton on Tuesday in Arizona.  The team is expected to talk to Oregon's Chip Kelly on Friday.

US economy adds 155K jobs, rate stays at 7.8 percent

WASHINGTON  --  U.S. employers added 155,000 jobs in December, a steady gain that shows hiring held up during tense fiscal cliff negotiations in Washington.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate stayed at 7.8 percent last month. November's rate was revised higher from an initially reported 7.7 percent.

Robust hiring in manufacturing and construction fueled the gains. Construction added 30,000 jobs, the most in 15 months. That likely reflects additional hiring needed to rebuild after Superstorm Sandy and also solid gains in home building that have contributed to a housing recovery.

Manufacturing gained 25,000, the most in nine months.

Even with the gains, hiring is far from accelerating. Employers added an average of 153,000 jobs a month last year, matching the monthly average in 2011.

Green: 1 dead, 3 hurt in crash

GREEN, Ohio -- One person died and three others were hospitalized in an overnight crash on Interstate 77 in Green Friday.

The crash was near mile marker 116, not far from Wise Road, before 2:30 a.m. The car traveled through a ditch and a fence, traveling into a field off the highway.

The right lane northbound is back open after being blocked from mile marker 116 to mile marker 113 overnight. 

Officials say they will release further details later this morning.

Brunswick: Water main break closes part of Center Road

BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- Part of Center Road (S.R. 303) in Brunswick is closed due to an early morning water main break Thursday.

The road is closed from Pearl Road (U.S. 42) to Substation Road (County Highway 38).

Parts of the street are buckling around the break and the water has created a layer of ice across a portion of Center Road.

It is not clear how long the road will be closed. Drivers should detour along Grafton Road to the north or Laurel Road to the south.
