Cleveland: Police arrest 3 in overnight standoff

CLEVELAND -- Three men were arrested and Lorain Avenue is back open after an overnight SWAT standoff on Cleveland's west side.

Police closed Lorain Avenue from West 117th Street to West 122nd Street at about 1:45 a.m., but police had been in the area with rifles since at least 1 a.m.

An officer was responding to a domestic violence call at an apartment on West 120th Street, off of Lorain Avenue.

While returning to his cruiser, the officer saw three men jumping out of an SUV that had its license plates covered by a t-shirt. The officer became suspicious, but the suspects ran from the officer.

Two of the suspects ran into another nearby apartment on Lorain Avenue. The third one continued running. His location is not known.

Shots were reportedly fired at this scene.

After a standoff that lasted almost three hours, both suspects were arrested.

A third man was also arrested on outstanding warrants who happened to be in the same apartment as the two suspects.

Officers found an 22-caliber AR style assault weapon with a plastic bag over it that reportedly fell out of the SUV. Officers explained that the bag is a tactic used to prevent shell casings from falling to the ground, where police can collect them as evidence at shooting scenes.

Lorain Avenue reopened just before 4 a.m., when police were able to get the men out of the basement of that building.

The building is believed to be mixed use, with a business on the first floor and apartments above it.

Cleveland Weather: Dense Fog Advisory

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 AM this morning. Visibilities have been reduced to a 1/4 mile or less. Please use caution when traveling on the roads this morning.

After the fog, expect temperatures to reach into the 60s today, nearly 20 degrees above normal for this time of year.

A cool is on the way on Tuesday and Wednesday with a cold front passing through.

Tuesday: Warm start with temperatures in the mid 50s. A cold front will pass through during the morning hours bringing more clouds and rain showers. Temperatures will cool through the day. Windy. High: Upper 50s. Wind: SW 10-20, gusts-25 mph.

Wednesday: Lingering rain and snow showers possible, otherwise mostly cloudy. Drastically cooler. Upper 30s.

Thursday: Partly sunny & chilly. Low 40s

Friday: Dry start with rain showers likely during the afternoon hours, as another cold front passed through the area. Upper 40s.

Saturday: Isolated rain and snow showers likely. Upper 30s/low 40s.

Cleveland Heights: Children start grassroots gift drive

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- A grassroots gift drive is going on right now in Cleveland Heights.

The word-of-mouth effort started with two children who wanted to help spread the holiday cheer to those in need.

Kayleigh and Nathaniel Mooney, the two children who started this push, say they feel lucky they're able to open presents on Christmas. It's something they know not everyone will be able to do and they wanted to help change that, one gift at a time.

"When you get something, it makes you feel happy and you get to be excited and open the presents and see what's inside," Kayleigh explains.

For 10-year-old Kayleigh, nothing is better than Christmas morning, and now she wants to help other kids in her community experience that same incredible feeling.

"I felt like if I woke up on Christmas morning, and there was nothing under the tree for me, I'd just feel so bad because it's Christmas and that's what it's supposed to be," Kayleigh says.

Kayleigh and her nearly 7-year-old brother Nathaniel are now asking people to help donate presents to children in need.

Their dad, Kevin, says it started with them seeing homeless people on a cold day.

They had talked about donating blankets and then came up with the idea of a gift drive.

"The thing that is marvelous to me is the fact that they know how to give so they understand love and tolerance about people in the community -- people they've never met -- and I think that's what we are supposed to be teaching our kids," Kevin Mooney says.

For Nathaniel, the reason to help out is simple.

"People should donate stuff to people who can't afford presents," he said.

If you'd like to donate a gift, the Mooney family says they are collecting presents for kids between about 2 and 11 years old. From now until Dec. 14, you can drop off wrapped and labeled gifts at Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy in Cleveland Heights.

All gifts will be donated to Family Connections and handed out to families in the Cleveland Heights area.

Cleveland Weather: Windy, Warm & Wet

It will be warm, windy and wet at times across Northeast Ohio for the next few days. Scattered rain showers are likely Sunday with temperatures still in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. A lower rain threat and even warmer weather is expected for Monday with temperatures in the low 60s. This will continue into Tuesday morning with temperatures in the 50s.

A cold front is expected to pass through Northeast Ohio Tuesday afternoon and that will spell big weather changes across our area. Specifically, temperatures over night Tuesday into Wednesday will dip into the 20s and 30s, and highs Wednesday will only reach into the upper 30s.

Still with warm weather expected for the next few days, get out there and enjoy it.

Brunswick: Standoff continues on Jefferson

BRUNSWICK --  Police and SWAT members are still on the scene Saturday morning at a standoff in Brunswick.

It started early Friday afternoon at a house on Jefferson Avenue and Route 303.

Police say it's possibly just the suspect is inside the home with a gun.

Area residents have been evacuated because of the stand off.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Cleveland Weather: December - warm start

November has certainly been a month to remember.

Temperatures have been running below average, which is of special interest considering we are coming off one of the warmest summers on record.

Cleveland had its first snowfall, but is running 4 inches behind average in that category too.

As far as liquid precipitation goes, we are still running on a surplus built in September and October, so northern Ohio is drought free.

So, what will December bring?

Well, looking into the first week we'll be treated to above average temperatures and have a few shots of rain coming.  During week number two we may have a major pattern change, which would send us back into colder air with the potential for snow.

Saturday:  Partly sunny to mostly cloudy.  Mid 50s

Saturday night: Partly cloudy with increased rain chances. Mid 40s.

Sunday:  Rain likely.  Breezy.  Upper 50s

Monday:  Mostly cloudy with a slight chance for showers.  Low 60s

Tuesday:  Mostly cloudy with rain likely (thunder?).  Mid 50s early, dropping into the 40s through the afternoon.

Wednesday:  Partly cloudy.  Upper 30s/near 40

Thursday:  Partly cloudy.  Low/mid 40s

Friday:  Rain likely.  Upper 40s

Consumer Minute: Target shoppers 'targeted' by phony texts

Millions of people shopped at Target over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. 

Shortly after many of them got a text message telling them they won a Target gift card. The text says: "Your entry last month has won. Go to Targetwinner.com, enter a code and claim your free $1000 gift card. The website it directs you to has the Target logo and looks like a legitimate website. But as you can guess, it's a scheme. It only asks for your birthday and name but with that information alone, hackers can find more information about you. No one seems to know where this text is coming from, but if you get one on your cell phone, do not click on the link and do not enter any information.

Consumer Reports ranked the country's wireless providers, and found cell phone companies still have their work cut out for them when it comes to customer satisfaction. None of the big four national carriers had an overall satisfaction score above 72%. Of the four main companies, Verizon Wireless ranked #1 with the best service, followed by Sprint, T-Mobile and then AT&T. Consumer Reports says cell phone companies remain among the lowest-rated service providers it evaluates.

More than 20,000 Sportspower Trampolines are being recalled due to an injury hazard. The trampoline's metal legs can move out of position and puncture the jumping area, posing a risk to anyone on the trampoline. The recall involves Sportspower Parkside model TR-14FT-COM trampolines, sold exclusively at Sports Authority since 2007. Consumers should stop using the trampoline and contact Sportspower to receive a free repair kit at 888-965-0565
